Scouting Report – John McBride
Name: John McBride Position: G Date of Birth: May 2, 1992 Glove Hand: Left Height (ft.): 5’9†Weight (lbs.): 200 Birthplace: Innisfail, Alberta, Canada Team: Winnipeg Jets ![]() Has there been a better Goalie than John McBride in the league last season? The SHL says “no†and therefore, McBride received the Fernando Garcia Trophy for the league’s best goaltender at the SHL Awards-Show yesterday. An impressive feat for a guy who just finished his first full season as an SHL-player and who only appeared in two games the season before. But this year, when McBride got his chance to be the starter for the Winnipeg Jets, he took it and never looked back. He played in all 60 games, winning 24 of them and sporting a save-percentage of 93,1% with a GAA of 2,14. Even though the Jets missed the play-offs, McBride was the first Goalie not named Fernando Garcia or Mike Honcho to win the league’s most prestigious award for net-minders. McBride is signed for two more years and will represent Canada at the World Championships this week, but this season will be about showing that he wasn’t just a one-hit wonder. Can he carry his Jets into the play-offs this time and more importantly, will he be able to impress in the post-season as well? ![]() John McBride – Winnipeg Jets ![]() Technique What makes John McBride so strong is his awesome technique. His natural goalie instincts are incredible and he executes them almost in perfection. You can see that he is a very well coached goalie by the way he moves and does the little things well. His style is beautiful to watch as he is one of the most elegant goalies in the crease who rarely gives up rebounds. His lightning fast reactions and quick glove hand have frustrated a lot of the league’s best Snipers already and there isn’t much more McBride can learn in this regard. RB = Rebound Control: 99 SC = Style Control: 99 HS = Hand Speed: 99 RT = Reaction Time: 99 ![]() Did we say elegant? Umm… Athletics McBride is a very agile goalie who moves from post to post in almost no time and will make a lot of sprawling saves. But the other athletic aspects of his game could use a bit more work, as they are his only weakness right now. His Skating is good but not great and there are some question marks when it comes to his endurance. McBride has played 60 games last season, but will he be able to do this again or should he be given a smaller work-load in order to be successful? Last year McBride gave up a few soft goals towards the end of games because he was gassed and since he also can be a bit injury-prone, the athletic side of the game should one of his main focuses in early-season training. SK = Skating: 79 EN = Endurance: 69 DU = Durability: 59 AG = Agility: 99 Miscellaneous At 5’9â€, McBride is very small for a goalie, but he seems bigger in net. With his 200 pounds he has a big frame and covers a lot of the goal, but due to his size high shots are probably the best method if you want to get the puck past him. One thing you don’t want McBride to do is handling the puck, he is no Martin Brodeur and will give it up easily if pressured. McBride isn’t too good on penalty-shots either, so if he wants to become a complete goalie these are two aspects he’ll have to work on too. SZ = Size: 79 PH = Puck Handling: 56 PS = Penalty Shot: 50 ![]() Another victory for John McBride. The Jets will need some more of these if they want to make the play-offs this year. Character Report McBride is a very committed guy, he does a lot to help younger players and GMs by making scouting reports and also is active in the media and broadcasting-department. Again, keep in mind that he has only played 62 games in the league so far and that he was a 5th round selection in the S5 SHL-Entry-Draft, he will only become better and the Jets certainly are very happy with the pick they made two years ago, as they have found a great backstopper and leader for years to come. ![]() Registered S7, S23 Challenge Cup Champion ![]() |
