Blizzard winger returns from the cold; holds first press conference since S32.

It's been over two seasons since Edmonton winger Ivan Koroviev last spoke to the media. Following the Blizzard's defeat to eventual Challenge Cup winners Calgary in the S32 Western Conference final, the one-time Russian international spurned the public spotlight to focus on his playing, and initially the decision looked to be a good one. Koro posted a career high fifty-six regular season points in S33, but after a six-game post-season elimination at the hands of the Los Angeles Panthers, some errant off-season decisions almost saw the end of his SHL career. The story, as recounted today by Koroviev himself, is as follows:

Quote:Originally posted by Ivan Koroviev
After season thirty-two play-offs, I went back to Russia. We have at this time IIHF tournament for to prepare, and also I want to relax, and enjoy my other passion: wodka. So myself and Viatcheslav [Orlov], we make team and enter competition in Moscow. Also here is Putin and [Deputy Head of Government, Viktor] Zubkov. In competition we drink for five, maybe six hours, and at the end is only Viatcheslav and me, Putin and Zubkov. Putin say to me: "Ivan, I am Head of Government. It will be good decision if you lose. But you know me—I play only to win, so I have drink for two, three more hours, and then I don't remember. Viatcheslav, he tell me that I throw wodka at Zubkov, and for this I am dropped from Team Russia for S33 and 34. In Russia is great crime to waste the wodka.

So, for me is no more Team Russia. Maybe in S35 I am allowed to play—maybe not. Now I have only to say thank you to everyone in Edmonton; they believe in me when in Russia I am criminal, and still they keep on my jersey, letter A. Even in this preseason, we have drinking competition like in Russia. Of course, I win, but now is not the winning that is important. Is important only that we have good team spirit, and we try again to be strong.

Blizzard The floor is now closed. A transcription of the press conference can be found below. Blizzard

Interview What do you think about the new collective in Edmonton?

Koro: In Russia we say the new blood is the good blood. Maybe is because in famine, you need more people so you eat when they die, but I think is good motto also for hockey. I hope this young talent will be good, and if not... well, we show what happens to the weak! Then maybe we have in Edmonton only the strong.

Interview With 19 points in 22 games and a team-leading 15 assists, where do you think Koroviev will finish the season production-wise?

Koro: I think top fifty in the league is not too difficult, but I don't know... This season is many younger players, maybe have more energy than me, but in Edmonton we have these players too. Guys like Aumeisters—every game they get better, so every game maybe they make me better also. Of course I want to be on top, but is not easy.

Interview Can Blizzard make the playoffs? If not, when is the soonest you think they could return?

Koro: Again is tough season, but maybe. We need more goals, but I think every game we are stronger. We just can keep playing, try to score, try to improve. This season is unusual for Edmonton, I think, because everyone have more points than us, but still we are very close. If we play well in second half... second half of the year, I think we can make playoffs. If not, still we are not far, and next year will be better.

Interview Got any extra fermented potato juice for me?

Koro: Ha! I tell you before, good wodka is from grain. These potatoes... this is for filthy Irish to make their poitín. I have many bottles though, potato and grain. I will bring tomorrow, but this time no getting sick on the ice!

Interview What will you think if Russia lets you play this season?

Koro: Of course I will be happy. Is not easy to watch when you should be on the ice, but this is life. I have to say again, I don't remember this throwing wodka, and is wodka contest! Sometimes we forget, and we do bad things. Maybe I can send to Zubkov bottle of wodka, or maybe X-ray of my liver. I think is obvious I do not waste the wodka. Yes, it was mistake, and yes, I apologise, but I hope this year I can play again for Russia.

Interview Do you miss your comrades?

Koro: Yes, of course. Many of them I see in SHL, but is not the same when you are enemies. In Russia uniform we all are friends, on the same team, and we share the same locker room. Also, is not possible to drink with other players like with Russian players, so this I miss.

Interview Have you talked to any of the new baby Russians yet?

Koro: No. I see them, of course. They play in SHL, and on television, but that's it. I think one or two I see at wodka competition in Moscow, but we do not talk. I think I have lot to offer them, but now is up to Team Russia.</div>

Hey, I missed seeing your media, comrade.

“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. ... There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.”
