[POLL] Changes to Salary/Contract Rules
#91

I really mean it when I say I'm in favor of everything in here except for punishment for early retirement and the lack of contracts being grandfathered in. More tiers - Yes. Length cap - Yes. No hometown discount - Sure. To me this is about maintaining the longevity of the league, this is going to fix contract issues for the next 10-20 seasons of this league, and it shouldn't punish teams for what they have right now. It's like when we were fighting TPE inflation, you're not going to fix it overnight, but you can make adjustments that will fix the problem over time.

I think overall my biggest fear is still that we'll end up moving towards styles of teams that try to run out their top 6 and top 3-4 D and not play anyone else so that players end up getting upwards of 25 minutes a game. I'd rather see us move away from that style of building a team, and my #1 concern remains that this kind of a cap structure would move us in a direction where teams are driven towards that.

There are people who's contracts are literally longer than 10-20 seasons, though, we can't fix the future without fixing the present. I definitely hear what you're saying about grandfathering things in, but it's not really fair to give teams with more players grandfathered in have a huge advantage over teams that don't have as many locked down.

More tiers and Management budget will be folded into the existing salary cap are the only two parts of the new rules that should be implemented.

League should move on fixing these tiny issues and actually try solving bigger issues like a new site and not rely on Reddit for recruitment.

We'll definitely keep an eye on things moving forward to make sure this doesn't happen - if teams are having trouble paying all their players in a way that's balanced across the league, that's definitely something HO would take a look at and adjust to fix. There's a reason the NHL salary cap is adjusted upward almost every season, and while I don't think that'll be necessary in the SHL this is a starting point and not a perfect solution to fix things forever.

Re: your earlier question about Tier 5, I think we'd decided that simplifying Tiers was more important than addressing a few people getting locked into a slightly lower contract. However, that was one of the reasons we had retirement penalties as well. I'll bring this up again in HO to make sure we feel like getting rid of that penalty means we should re-look at this issue.

Who the fuck cares how long contracts are. Hossa signed a 13 season contract in the NHL if you are trying to say 10 year contracts are unrealistic. This is such an over complication of rules it's stupid. The players who take absurdly long contracts are so few and far between. Trying to force parity is absolutely not the way to go about this.

Why the fuck are you cursing at me? Let's try and stay level headed in public discussion, we're actively looking for feedback here, so good discussion is what will help us get it. And isn't the maximum contract in the NHL 8 seasons now?

Based on what grounds?

Alonzo Garbanzo Final Tallies (Among Defensemen):
2nd in Goals (208), All-Time Assists Leader (765)*, All-Time Points Leader (973), 3rd in Hits (2587), All-Time Blocked Shots Leader (1882)*
*All-Time Leader Among All Skaters

I really don't like the idea of having to adjust contracts up every season just because a player has updated to a new tier. , there would be no point in offering/signing any contract longer than 1 season.

especially if contract length is being maxed out, a player who keeps developing will get their payday on their next contract, why not allow players/teams to work out relative deals? Sometimes players have a decent bank account (esp. recreates) and can sign relatively low contracts in their early years to help out the team that drafts them. It seems unfair to take that option away.

Toews and Kane just signed 11 year extensions a year or so ago. There is no cap on length.

That's why adjusting contracts isn't in this proposal, I agree all of your points here

This is wrong.

8 years for signing an existing player.
7 years for signing a free agent.
