He also has Channel Orange as #12, so. Not that I'm a Frank Ocean dick rider but that album was great.

I loved Nostalgia, Ultra, but I just can't get into Channel Orange too much.

It was an album that didn't really have anything that was bad, per se, but it also had nothing that really stands out to me. No replay value whatsoever.

If you'll notice, I also included The Weeknd's compilation in my list and some substantially shittier R&B releases. I did so because hip-hop/rap and R&B are so connected at times, it seemed to make sense. Also because I made this the official rap/R&B thread, lol.

the fact that you have Life is Good as your #2 album of the year tells me hip-hop in 2012 was shit.
not that its a bad album, but its not great.

Well, the rankings were made based on how I rated them. A 4.47/5, which is the score I gave it, would be high regardless of the year.

Full Review of Syllable Sliding (Mixtape) by Anilyst

Track 1- Forgot About Dre- 5/5 Anilyst starting out strong, loving the beat, and he comes out swinging, I love his flow, it's not generic and he doesn't use some gimmick he just raps and it's damn good. I absolutely love this song.

Track 2- About It- 5/5 Heard this one pre-release, he let it out from his facebook page and another beast ass song. The beat reminds me of a Yung Money beat, and Once again Anilyst's rapping is top notch honestly some of the best rapping I've heard in years. Reminds me of a young J Cole, he's HUNGRY. And the hook on this song is one of my favorites. Really solid song can't think of anything to take away from this one again.

Track 3- Winners- 4.5/5 Holy fuck this one was my favorite thus far. Really unique beat and the fact he uses Charlie Sheen as a backbone on the hook. This song's amazing. I shied away from this one prior to the release so I could get some new music and enjoy the release instead of hearing EVERYTHING. But about 2/3rds through the song it went into a Skrillexesque Dubstep breakdown so he loses some points, if he lost that this song would be flawless

Track 4- No Mercy- 4/5, Wasn't feeling this one, hated the beat from the beginning, I love the rapping though, his rapping style is relatively the same throughout the album thus far but it's just different enough to keep me listening each song and loving it. Only thing I would like to see him cut back on a little bit is his cut's off the beat, and he carries out the verse for about 5 seconds longer, he overdoes it a little because it's in just about every song at least once and while it's a nice effect he seems to overdo it (I think this one was a let down for me because I was expecting No Mercy as in T.I featuring The Dream which I actually really enjoyed)

Track 5- Ambition- 4.5/5, He slowed the Wale beat down a bit too much off the start, once the actual beat starts in though I really got into it, first 30 seconds I wasn't feeling it at all and as soon as the beat kicked in his rapping made the song pretty beast, the breakdown about 2:45 in is about my favorite :30 of the album so far. Iunno why but I really like it (AND He didn't do the cut beat carry verse)

Track 6- Wildfire (Remix)- 4/5 This one has a real old school feel out of the gate, the beat is so funky, he changes up Drake's version's beat just enough that it sounds original and he carries it.. Later in the song the song sounds a bit too busy, there's the female vocals in the back that don't sound good, mixed with the drum track and the synth it just sounds too overdone but when it's just the beat and him he tears it up, just not one of the best

Track 7- Try It (Riot Remix)- 5/5 When I first heard it, reminded me of a Trap Song but the rapping isn't terrible  the rapping is beast and the beat is something that you don't hear every day and he does it well. Not my favorite but I can't dock the song because while I probably won't have it on my top 5 on the album the song is good

Track 8- Triple Threat- 5/5 The first Anilyst song I heard and I absolutely fell in love, partly with the ungodly hot girl in the music video, partly because this song is amazing. And it still is, the song is going to be one of my top 50 most played on Winamp until I die probably, that's how much I've played this one since I first heard it. Beat is amazing, Rapping is amazing, hook is catchy as fuck, nothing wrong with this one at all. This one is still my choice for track of the album and one of my top 10 of last year

Track 9- HYFR (Remix)- 4.75/5 Ok following up Triple Threat was going to be a task for him and he did it exactly the way I wanted him too. Started off the beat slow, brought in fast rapping, but had a beat that banged hard. The song is great. Definitely prefer this to Drake's version

Track 10- Chunk Up the Deuce- 4.5/5 Wasn't quite sure what to think of a Paul Wall remix but he does it well. I actually was impressed he did so well on the beat, I mean it's not hard to show up Paul Wall but for what it's worth... He did it!

Track 11- Grown Simba (Remix)-4.5/5 Now this is the one I was most excited about from the beginning. Mixing up a J Cole track from JCole at his best I was excited and he delivered! The hook was a bit repetitive (So is the original but I was hoping he'd change it up a bit Tongue) but other than that the song was beast. I loved the original and I loved Anilyst's version. Really impressed with how he carried the beat though. The only thing I'm docking points on is the hook which while pretty much the same as JCole's is just not quite as good.

Track 12- Megaman Verse- 4.75/5 He goes hard. Enough said. Even though he uses the word YOLO his rapping makes up for it. -.25 for using YOLO. But holy shit man this guy still impresses me with his flow. He's insane on the mic

Track 13- Clique (Remix)- 5/5 He's got some fucking balls. Remixing Yeezy, and Jay Z. I gotta give him props though he carries a very unconventional beat and I honestly prefer everything except the hook from the original. The rapping keeps me far more entertained but the clique doesn't sound right without Yeezy. Also I was really happy to hear him slow down his raps about half way through, I hadn't heard him do that much and to hear him do a full verse shows me he can adapt to a beat and not be a one trick pony. Also the way he swaps his styles throughout this song is pretty slick, he does a good job of mirroring Jay Z, Big Sean and Yeezy's styles at their respective times. I was really impressed.

Track 14- Snapbacks- 3.5/5 Another one I heard prior to the release and while it's not my favorite by any means it's not bad. I think it's my least favorite on the album, only one that didn't keep me wanting more once it ended.

Track 15- Backseat Freestyle (Remix) 4.5/5, this is one that's going to grow on me and for the time being it's only getting a 4.5, the beat reminds me of Mercy by Yeezy and a shit ton of others, and I HATED that song at first. This would bang in a car from what I'm getting in my headphones and this song is beast, another one I heard prior to the release but it's not my favorite, the hook just doesn't draw me in but the rapping is once again top notch.

Total Marks- 68.75 out of 75= 4.6/5.
Closing Remarks. This is by far my favorite Mixtape ever. Quite possibly my mixtape of the year already. This is dope as fuck. Until Childish Gambino's new Studio comes out later this year I'm not going to take this one out of my cars CD player. This kid has mad potential and I'm STOKED to hear him progress. Easily my favorite up and comer. Has lyrical skill, ability to carry a beat and he doesn't rely on some bullshit gimmick

Thank you to My boys @Merica and @Ragnar for the lovely sigs!

This isn't bad. Dude can definitely spit and has some sick bars..... But that is about it. Very rarely did he slow down and ride a beat better (which is why I prefer the original HYFR over this one). He does sound like Cole a bit and has that hunger but Anilyst just spits and doesn't really tell a story like Cole can. He also rhymes about the same 3 things: Weed, Women and violence. I also gave this a low score because I got bored hearing the same shit especially when I could hear the original of alot of these songs and prefer it more. This album became a blur and not in the way where you feel like you are on a journey through the world of an artist (like MBDTF, or Captain Murphy's Duality), but more so like if you have heard the subject matter of one song, you have heard it for all the songs.

also maxy you didnt mention Backseat Freestyle was a kendrick beat which makes me believe you haven't heard his album, and just blindly dislike the dude.

I've definitely heard his album, I've listened to the original song twice forgive me for not putting two and two together, I don't know the GKMC setlist because I didn't enjoy the album aside from about 2-3 songs. Now that you bring it up I obviously realize that and I knew the beat sounded familiar but couldn't place my finger on it. At first I thought it was off of Cruel Summer but now you point out GKMC I recognize it and where have I ever hated on Kendrick? I have said probably 100 times I respect the guys ability but most of his raps are not my style and they bore me. I love some singular songs of his. I love Rigamortus, I love Sing About Me/I'm dying of Thirst, but aside from that I don't love any of his music. He's a great rapper but much like Nas, and Jay Z I can't get into his shit.
