Thoughts on the Elections
#1

Just watched Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. A classic Frank Capra film starring one of my favorite actors (though I can't say I've seen him in anything except this and It's a Wonderful Life, maybe I just like Capra's directing of him) Jimmy Stewart, it tells the tale of a young man chosen because of his appeal to the public and his presumed ability to keep his head down and just be in awe of being a Senator of the US, not bringing opposition to the party machine looking to place a dam in the middle of a creek that would be perfect for a boy's camp. He ends up fainting and the man he looked up to admits to the corruption. Kind of brings a tear to your eye.

It's an interesting tale. I like Stewart because he seems real. He seems genuine. That might also be more of Capra talking, but he genuinely cares about the people and the youth and the growth of a nation. Even in the face of the political machine falsely accusing him of fraud and stuff, he gives some of the more real emotions to having that experience thrown upon you.

In the film, Senator Smith filibusters for close to 24 hours to defend his case and show that he truly is the real deal. It's unbelievable in most respects, as the longest real filibuster lasted at 24 hours 18 minutes from Strom Thurmond to derail the Civil Rights Act of 1957. Seems funny that the longest filibuster was to restrict the rights of man being recognized by the whole of a nation.

I know the SHL elections are nowhere as serious as anything relating to the Senate. I know there's no true political machine here to keep certain folks out of office. It does, however, feel like, at times, certain folks running for office won't get elected because of popularity or because of a few mistakes. There are folks that want to help the league, and that should be cherished. I don't know, I'm talking out of my ass at this point. I guess the movie just kind of spoke to me and I wanted to share that with you all, my friends of the web.

It just made me think about the elections here. I want the right person to be in office come the end of this week. I don't want it to be about who people think will curry favor toward some of the more extreme members, or who dislikes who. If that's not me, fine. I think it is, and I'd like to help. Just think about who you really want to be in office the next few seasons, if they'll listen to you. Vote for someone you trust to fight, to listen, and who can be persuaded to do the right thing even if they initially disagree with you. Vote for the person who's not afraid of change. Vote for the person you're not afraid to go talk to.

I don't mean to single anyone out, and if I unintentionally do, then sorry. Just wanted to get some of this out there in a general sense. Let the "Shut up c" and other comments (and inevitable neg reps) commence.
