Welcome everyone, to the list all goalies will love to read, the top 20 goalies in the SHL, by TPE!
Obviously TPE does not mean best goalie, and maybe someone could take the time to make a list of the top goalies based on stats, that would be quite interesting too, but I think an opinion based article like that should maybe come from a non-goalie to avoid bias. So I’ll be ranking them all by TPE, and I’ll include their draft year so we can see exactly how hard each goalie has worked per season, and we can tell which goalies have the brightest futures in the SHL. *note, I calculated everyone’s updated TPE, and counted the TPE totals minus the regression demands for those that haven’t done there regression yet, however, their builds are still not regressed. So lets jump in! Just Missed out: (S20) Seatte Riot - Phil Osgood: TPE 400 SK = Skating: 60 EN = Endurance: 64 - 60 DU = Durability: 50 SZ = Size: 90 - 87 AG = Agility: 90 - 87 RB = Rebound Control: 83 SC = Style Control: 85 - 83 HS = Hand Speed: 85 - 83 RT = Reaction Time: 83 PH = Puck Handling: 50 PS = Penalty Shot: 50 The second oldest goaltender on this list, is the Seattle Riot’s back up goalie Phil Osgood. Osgood is already 4 seasons into his regression, and was never very high in TPE to begin with, so this explains why he doesn't make the list, with his low 400 TPE numbers. However, Osgood has surprisingly been very reliable for the few starts he gets every season. His stats usually resemble those of a starter, except with only 6 games played. It has to be taken into account that he does play against some of the worst teams in the SHL as well. It’s to be expected that the worst goalie in TPE who’s also the 2nd oldest, has the very worst TPE per season average. Average TPE per season: 16.3 (S24) Portland Admirals - Tyler NoNerves: TPE 506 (Regression not done) SK = Skating: 80 DU = Durability: 50 EN = Endurance: 85 SZ = Size: 85 AG = Agility: 85 RB = Rebound Control: 85 SC = Style Control: 90 HS = Hand Speed: 85 RT = Reaction Time: 82 PH = Puck Handling: 61 PS = Penalty Shot: 52 Tyler NoNerves enters his first season in regression, loweringg his already low totals. Portland have this man under contract for the backup role, behind up and coming star Kyle Wahlgren. NoNerves is a goalie who sticks to his style, and is pretty balanced among most stats, but doesn't have too many excellent stats. His 35 TPE per season prove just how badly he’s been working at growing, and Portland will probably continue to use him as a back up until he’s washed up. Average TPE per season: 31.9 The top 20: 20. (S31) Manhattan Rage - Ekaterina Rudnikova: TPE 509 SK = Skating: 80 EN = Endurance: 87 SZ = Size: 80 AG = Agility: 80 RB = Rebound Control: 71 SC = Style Control: 90 HS = Hand Speed: 90 RT = Reaction Time: 90 PH = Puck Handling: 50 PS = Penalty Shot: 50 Ekaterina Rudnikova was a hot prospect in the S31 draft, and we will soon see that in the S31 draft there was a ton of quality goaltenders that are still around, trying to reach their prime in their SHL careers. Rudnikova was one of the highest ranked prospects, but she has been a bit of a let down, having just barely cracked 500 TPE, it slots her at the 20th position on this list. She is averaging 118 TPE per season, which is one of the lowest among goaltenders not regressing. Average TPE per season: 88.5 19. (S29) Calgary Dragons - Richard C. Chocolate: TPE 613 SK = Skating: 82 EN = Endurance: 80 SZ = Size: 80 AG = Agility: 82 RB = Rebound Control: 90 SC = Style Control: 90 HS = Hand Speed: 90 RT = Reaction Time: 90 PH = Puck Handling: 70 PS = Penalty Shot: 70 Richard C. Chocolate, drafted in S29 has 2 seasons in hand on all the young S31 goalies, yet he’s lower than everyone but 1 on this list. Chocolate has been very slowly but surely training and growing, but with Hunter Wong regressing quicker and quicker, the Dragons must be wondering if Chocolate will be ready in time to take over, or if they need to start looking at a new prospect for the future of their organization. Chocolate currently has the 2nd worst TPE per season rating among goalies who have never regressed. Average TPE per season: 76.3 18. (S19) West Kendall Platoon - Colin Schmidt: TPE 614 (Regression not done yet) SK = Skating: 70 EN = Endurance: 60 DU = Durability: 50 SZ = Size: 83 AG = Agility: 85 RB = Rebound Control: 92 SC = Style Control: 93 HS = Hand Speed: 97 RT = Reaction Time: 97 PH = Puck Handling: 80 PS = Penalty Shot: 50 Next we find ourselves with the oldest goaltender on the list, from S19, Colin Schmidt. Schmidt was one of the stronger goalies back in the day for the Platoon, he has since been regressed so much that he’s starting to reach the point of being a scare to have in nets even as back up. However, he hasn’t reached that point yet, his experience still shows, and he’s still got his lightning quick reflexes and and hand speed. He has the worst TPE per season among everyone in the top 20, which is to be expected for someone as regressed as him. Average TPE per season: 28.7 17. (S31) Texas Renegades - Georgette Pel: TPE 731 SK = Skating: 81 DU = Durability: 50 EN = Endurance: 90 SZ = Size: 88 AG = Agility: 85 RB = Rebound Control: 90 SC = Style Control: 91 HS = Hand Speed: 91 RT = Reaction Time: 92 PH = Puck Handling: 77 PS = Penalty Shot: 50 Georgette Pel is one of the names that are less known names around the SHL, due to him just recently starting to get some ice time over veteran goaltender Christoffer Bjornsson. The Renegades have a nice situation here as they have an asset in Bjornsson that they can send away from future value, and still have a great up and coming goaltender to replace him. Peel is the first goalie on the list to have an impressive average TPE count, at 192 he is working hard to be ready for when Texas needs him. Average TPE per season: 144 16. (S31) Hamilton Steelhawks - Ben Waters: TPE 737 SK = Skating: 86 EN = Endurance: 86 SZ = Size: 86 AG = Agility: 86 RB = Rebound Control: 90 SC = Style Control:90 HS = Hand Speed: 91 RT = Reaction Time: 90 PH = Puck Handling: 50 PS = Penalty Shot: 50 Just 6 TPE ahead of Pel, is Ben Waters. Waters is the only man in Hamilton despite his young age, and has been relied on to try and salvage something from a pretty young team, who is having a hard time in recent seasons. He is progressing nicely however, as he is reaching the point of entering his prime, and with 194 TPE growth per season, we can expect this to happen sooner rather than later. Average TPE per season: 145.5 15. (S31) Manhattan Rage - Jason Aittokallio: TPE 743 SK = Skating: 85 EN = Endurance: 85 SZ = Size: 85 AG = Agility: 85 RB = Rebound Control: 90 SC = Style Control: 90 HS = Hand Speed: 90 RT = Reaction Time: 90 PH = Puck Handling: 83 PS = Penalty Shot: 50 A goalie who has only been around since that mega-goalie S31 draft, and he has already lead his team to the finals as a starter. It was a cinderella run to say the least, the Rage were not expected to make it that far, but with the help of the newest Aittokallio, they nearly won the cup. Aittokallio has been working well every season to try and reach his full potential, earning 196 TPE per season. Average TPE per season: 147 14. (S31) Toronto North Stars - Jeff Kirkstone: TPE 797 SK = Skating: 81 EN = Endurance: 90 SZ = Size: 85 AG = Agility: 85 RB = Rebound Control: 90 SC = Style Control: 94 HS = Hand Speed: 92 RT = Reaction Time: 93 PH = Puck Handling: 60 PS = Penalty Shot: 56 Slowly passing under the radar has been Jeff Kirkstone, who has earned 214 TPE per season bringing him to just under 800 TPE which is very solid for a S31 goalie. Kirkstone looks to be getting his chance this season in Toronto, as he's been declared the starter by the GMs, taking over for Mark Harter. Kirkstone will have a magnifying glass over him in the big city of Toronto, and the pressure is on, will he be the goalie to one day end Toronto’s curse? Average TPE per season: 160 13. (S23) Los Angeles Panthers - Erik Lundqvist: TPE 801 SK = Skating: 82 DU = Durability: 50 EN = Endurance: 85 SZ = Size: 86 AG = Agility: 85 RB = Rebound Control: 90 SC = Style Control: 93 HS = Hand Speed: 93 RT = Reaction Time: 95 PH = Puck Handling: 70 PS = Penalty Shot: 66 After a series of 4 goaltenders from the S31 draft, we find an older face, who has just started his regression period. The Los Angeles Panthers had high hopes for Erik Lundqvist when they drafted him in S23, however, they saw a glimpse of a goalie who might not have been as committed to his training as they would have hoped, and GM Wasty made a great move and drafted a new face of the future in Timo Haas. Since then, Hass has taken over the starter role, and now with Lundqvist regressing, he falls under Haas’ TPE level, and it looks like he won’t be getting that role back anytime soon. Average TPE per season: 53.7 12. (S31) Portland Admirals - Kyle Wahlgren: TPE 822 SK = Skating: 85 EN = Endurance: 91 SZ = Size: 85 AG = Agility: 85 RB = Rebound Control: 85 SC = Style Control: 92 HS = Hand Speed: 94 RT = Reaction Time: 94 PH = Puck Handling: 61 PS = Penalty Shot: 51 One of the most talked about names in the SHL, is Admirals goaltender and young leader, Kyle Wahlgren. “Wally†has been an outstanding prospect for the Admirals, and is already leading the team towards their first ever playoff berth. He is surrounded by youngsters, and is leading the way for all of them. Wahlgren is one of only 3 goalies to be above the 200 mark in Average TPE per season, sitting in 2nd with 222. It will be tough to keep this pace up as he matures, but he is well on his way to reaching the 1000 mark in the coming season or so. Average TPE per season: 166.7 11. (S31) Los Angeles Panthers - Timo Haas: TPE 835 SK = Skating: 82 DU = Durability: 50 EN = Endurance: 85 SZ = Size: 90 AG = Agility: 90 RB = Rebound Control: 91 SC = Style Control: 95 HS = Hand Speed: 95 RT = Reaction Time: 95 PH = Puck Handling: 50 PS = Penalty Shot: 50 Rookie of the year winner last season, and the most talked about prospect among all goalies, Timo Haas reaches 1 shy of the top 10, already after being drafted just 3 seasons ago. Timo Haas is a part of a very impressive, young, Panthers squad who has been performing very well in the past 2 seasons. The future looks bring for both him, and his team. He leads all the goalies on this list with 226 TPE per season, and the Panthers must be loving his progression. Expect him to reach the 1000 mark as soon as this upcoming season’s playoffs. Average TPE per season: 170 10. (S26) Edmonton Blizzard - Brett Broadway: TPE 851 SK = Skating: 85 DU = Durability: 50 EN = Endurance: 86 SZ = Size: 91 AG = Agility: 85 RB = Rebound Control: 92 SC = Style Control: 93 HS = Hand Speed: 90 RT = Reaction Time: 92 PH = Puck Handling: 80 PS = Penalty Shot: 71 Entering the top 10, but probably won’t be staying here for long is Challenge Cup champion, Brett Broadway. Broadway has already had an impressive career with his Edmonton Blizzard, and one has to wonder if theres more to come. It’s a bit surprising to see all the success he and the Blizzard have had together, as he's been around since S26 and yet he still hasn’t even reached 900 TPE. He is the lowest earner of TPE per season among all non-regressed goalies, which has to have Edmonton worried. Average TPE per season: 77.3 9. (S29) Buffalo Stampede - Casey Holmes: TPE 908 SK = Skating: 73 DU = Durability: 50 (do not add TPE here, injuries are turned off) EN = Endurance: 82 SZ = Size: 92 AG = Agility: 91 RB = Rebound Control: 95 SC = Style Control: 95 HS = Hand Speed: 96 RT = Reaction Time: 99 PH = Puck Handling: 80 PS = Penalty Shot: 50 Next we have a goalie who has just entered his prime, and is slowly reaching the 1000 mark, Casey Holmes. The Stampede have faith that Holmes will be the man to lead them to the success they hope to achieve very soon, they have been knocking on the door, and are getting ready to open it. Holmes has been a fair earner of TPE, averaging 150 per season. Average TPE per season: 125.5 8. (S21) Calgary Dragons - Hunter Wong: TPE 1000 (Regression not done yet) SK = Skating: 90 EN = Endurance: 85 DU = Durability: 50 SZ = Size: 93 AG = Agility: 94 RB = Rebound Control: 95 SC = Style Control: 95 HS = Hand Speed: 99 RT = Reaction Time: 99 PH = Puck Handling: 50 PS = Penalty Shot: 50 Next we have the legendary Hunter Wong. The Wong name is a powerful one in the SHL, and Hunter lived up to expectations in his career. He has been around since S21, making him the 3rd oldest goalie in this list, and the oldest goalie to still be a starter. He has been regressed quite a bit, and is now exactly on the 1000 TPE mark, which means he is slowly exiting his prime. He has an average of 65 TPE per season, which is mainly affected by his regression years. Average TPE per season: 60.3 7. (S27) Wesr Kendall Platoon - Matt Lewis-Flood: TPE 1033 SK = Skating: 83 7/8 DU = Durability: 50 (do not add TPE here, injuries are turned off) EN = Endurance: 90 SZ = Size: 90 AG = Agility: 93 RB = Rebound Control: 95 SC = Style Control: 99 HS = Hand Speed: 99 RT = Reaction Time: 99 PH = Puck Handling: 50 PS = Penalty Shot: 50 Number 7 we have the West Kendall platoons starting goaltender matt Lewis flood. Matt Lewis flood was known as a beast in the SMJHL but it has taken him a while to reach that level in the SHL. With the help of Veteran presence Colin Schmidt his finally entered his prime this past season with a career year and having eclipsed 1000 TPE. West Kendall platoon have high hopes for Matt Lewis flood, in their search for a challenge cup. What is definitely behind the ball compared to other goaltenders when considering tpe earning, he is averaging 125 TPE per season. Average TPE per season: 109.8 6. (S22) Toronto North Stars - Mark Harter: TPE 1048 (regression not done yet) SK = Skating: 95 EN = Endurance: 90 SZ = Size: 94 AG = Agility: 93 RB = Rebound Control: 90 SC = Style Control: 99 HS = Hand Speed: 99 RT = Reaction Time: 99 PH = Puck Handling: 50 PS = Penalty Shot: 50 Just missing out on the top five is the Toronto North Stars veteran goalkeeper Mark Harter. Harter is the second oldest starting goaltender in the league and it seems like he will be leaving Toronto this season. He is 6th best goalie on paper so you should have no trouble finding himself a new home to try and win The elusive challenge cup. Harter has regressed quite a bit which is why his average TPE per season is at 74. Average TPE per season: 68.7 5. (S27) Winnipeg Jets - Lukas Berger: TPE 1076 SK = Skating: 90 DU = Durability: 50 EN = Endurance: 95 SZ = Size: 95 AG = Agility: 90 RB = Rebound Control: 90 SC = Style Control: 90 HS = Hand Speed: 90 RT = Reaction Time: 90 PH = Puck Handling: 90 PS = Penalty Shot: 90 Kicking off the top five might be a surprise to some from the Winnipeg Jets Lucas Berger. He's inching closer and closer to the 1100 tpe mark and as the Jets are getting better there are slowly realizing they have pretty darn good goalie between their pipes. Burger has been earning TP on a very respectable Pace but there are some slightly younger goalies that have quite a sizeable advantage over him. Average TPE per season: 115.1 4. (S28) New England Wolfpack - Mikke Laukkanen: TPE 1241 SK = Skating: 95 EN = Endurance: 94 SZ = Size: 95 AG = Agility: 89 RB = Rebound Control: 99 SC = Style Control: 95 HS = Hand Speed: 99 RT = Reaction Time: 99 PH = Puck Handling: 60 PS = Penalty Shot: 60 As we reach the top four this is where the elite goalies are found. Mikke Laukkanen kicks off top section of our list fresh Off The Challenge cup win his second of his career. He has over a hundred and fifty tpe anyone below him on this list which shows that there are four is eight or ten years in this league. Laukkanen is also still pretty young being drafted in s28 and yet he has already reached the total tpe level of 1241 he is earning tpe at a rate of 181 per season. Average TPE per season: 155.1 3. (S26) Texas Renegades - Christoffer Bjornsson: TPE 1246 SK = Skating: 90 EN = Endurance: 90 SZ = Size: 95 AG = Agility: 95 RB = Rebound Control: 95 SC = Style Control: 99 HS = Hand Speed: 99 RT = Reaction Time: 99 PH = Puck Handling: 86 PS = Penalty Shot: 60 Christoffer Bjornsson is the man who comes in third with 1246 TPE he has had a hard time in creating an identity for himself on the ice but no one can deny his skill and talent. The Renegade seem to be looking to start their younger auction in call even though Christoffer Bjornsson is a much more skill goaltender they seem to be in need of a rebuild and youth looks to be taking over over talent. Christoffer Bjornsson should not have too much of a hard time finding a place to play in the NHL is the third-highest goaltender in tpe and is averaging 136 CPE per season so he's still doing a decent job in earning and growing. Average TPE per season: 121.4 2. (S28) Seattle Riot - Michael McFadden: TPE 1322 SK = Skating: 95 EN = Endurance: 95 SZ = Size: 95 AG = Agility: 95 RB = Rebound Control: 99 SC = Style Control: 95 HS = Hand Speed: 99 RT = Reaction Time:99 PH = Puck Handling: 70 PS = Penalty Shot: 78 Nearly 100 tpe later we reach Michael McFadden who lines in second with 1322 tpe. McFadden was drafted in season 28 and has been earning at a rate of 194 tpe per season. The Seattle Riot are in good hands well they have McFadden in goal, if they could just solve their offensive problems they would be serious contenders for the challenge cup. McFadden has pledged his loyalty to the Seattle riot and looks to be planning to play his entire career with this franchise he also seems to be the type of player will be around for a very long time which is all great news for the Seattle. He is only 46 TP away from the league lead among goaltenders and that the rate is earning tpe at it is not too far-fetched I think he would be our leader of this time next season. Average TPE per season: 166.7 1. (S26) Minnesota Chiefs - Robert Anderson: TPE 1368 SK = Skating: 95 DU = Durability: 40 (do not add TPE here, injuries are turned off) EN = Endurance: 95 SZ = Size: 95 AG = Agility: 95 RB = Rebound Control: 99 SC = Style Control: 95 HS = Hand Speed: 99 RT = Reaction Time: 99 PH = Puck Handling: 87 PS = Penalty Shot: 73 And finally our leader and our top goaltender Robert Andersson. The Minnesota Chiefs drafted Andersson in s26 and have been reaping the rewards ever since with his great work ethic and great on Ice play. Minnesota has bunch of other problems around their lineup especially when considering depth, however they know they have the best goaltender in the league so this is not an issue for them and shouldn't be for a long time. Robert Anderson was drafted in s26 and so he still has another three seasons before he starts regressing. It is unclear if the Chiefs be able to turn their team around by then, however Andersson should have more than enough TPW to fight regression for a long time especially if he continues his average TPE earning per season of 151. Average TPE per season: 134.8 Thank you everyone for meeting I hope you enjoyed this article on the League's top goaltenders and hopefully there will be more to come in the following season. Congrats to Andersson for being our leader and everyone else who made the list. Abit over 3500 words, double media week |
