S38 PT 4 - Key Players
#3

When it comes to top performing players, I'd say the St. Louis Scarecrows have three major standouts on the ice, and one off the ice. If you want results, you want Dermot Lavelle, Logan Jensen, and Seth Paige.

Lavelle is our top line enter and he can honestly do everything. He's dynamite at faceoffs (winning 55% of faceoffs he takes), he leads the team in plus/minus at 14, and he leads the team in assists. Honestly, if he was not playing with a pure goal scorer like Giuseppe Risolo, he'd probably be burying more pucks in the net and lead the team in goals too. But right now the scoring title belongs to someone else. Right now Dermot is ranked second in the league behind Kane-Rielly, who also leads the league in points, Nothing to sneeze at.

Jensen is our top goal scorer, and I'd say he's earned it. He's only playing on the second line and he still leads the team with 15 goals, and he's also shown to be an effective play maker with his 15 assists. Here's a really crazy stat of his though: Jensen leads the team with 123 shots and next player behind him is Lavelle with 84. But... Jensen is still putting pucks in the back of the net 12% of the time. It's not like Jensen is taking shots from bad angles constantly, he's just able to put himself in a scoring position that often! It helps that 6 of goals came on the power play, but with how rough our power play has been this season, it''s nice to know there's one guy that can put the puck in the back of the net when we have a man advantage. Jensen is tied for 2nd in the league in goals with 4 other players, showing he really is one of the best goal-scorers in this league.

Paige is just about everything you want in a defensive number one defenseman. He's second on our team in hits with 58, he's second on our team in minutes played (because The Dude was double shifted on the power play) at 22.12 a night (or 686 total thus far this season). Being defensively minded does not mean he can't put up points, though. Paige leads all defensemen on the Scarecrows with 19 points, 18 of them coming from assists. He's a top notch puck distributor that you can always expect to be in a good position on the ice. Paige is tied for 9th in points for a defensemen in the league, but he brings so much more to the table than points, it's hard to look at just points to really decide his value to a team.

Off the ice can be just as important as on the ice, and we have someone who does everything right off the ice. The Dude. He's been a stellar captain this season, he's been a personal mentor of mine, and he leads the team in minutes played because he's the kind of guy you want on the ice as much as possible. He has experience and composure. The kind of intangible thing that can really calm things down out there because everyone knows he's the kind of guy that'll make a great play if the other team gives him the chance. The other team gets scared, and our guys become more confident. So I know we were asked about on-ice statistics, but when a guy is in the weight room every day, connecting with guys away from the ice, and mentoring his teammates to become better people and players, that needs to be noted. It's just as important, if not more important, than the on-ice results of a player or two. You won't find a better captain in the SMJHL.
