Hockey, and really sports in general, are meant to be fun. Despite the fact that there are hundreds of other means of entertainment out there for kids to choose these days, there is still no reason that little Jimmy and little Susie can’t find their way to the game that we all love. So, while I have been asked to put together a program to get kids learning about the game, I’m not going to go out of my way to do things that are outlandish just to get the kids through the door. Passion for the sport will happen pretty naturally for the kids that love the game. We will reward those kids with top flight instruction throughout their time in the program and reward them for continued success through opportunities to continue to come back and work for the school as coaches for financial incentive. Forcing kids who don’t want to learn the game to do so, is just going to lead to burnout. Let the kids choose their path and decide they want to join the school to learn more about hockey. And if that doesn’t work, we’ll just have to buy more candy.
