S55 PT #5 - Playoffs (Remix)

We will do a nice commercial with nice music. It needs to be a nice mood for winning and competition so well will go with Lil Tjay's song "Shoot for the Stars" featuring Fivio Foreign. Then we will need to feature big players from each of the teams which are the Manhattan Rage, Hamilton Steelhawks, Buffalo Stampede, Chicago Syndicate, Edmonton Blizzard, New Orleans Specters, Texas Renegades, and Calgary Dragons. So when we do the players we will do the following ones:

Aaron Wilson (scoring goal), Peter Larson (making a huge save), Monkey D. Luffy (scoring goal), Parker Smeb (making a big hit), Emiko Specter (making a big save), Mike Izzy (making a big hit), Jimmy Slothface (making a perfect pass for a one timer goal), and Andreas Kvalheim (stealing the pick from an opponent).

It will be so dramatic and at the end it will show clips of some recent teams in the playoffs to win cups like the Specters and Steelhawks and Stampede and then it will be like who will win tune in to the playoffs to find out yeah!

This one is going to follow an extra loud commercial and it will immediately cut to a black scene with silence. The transition will immediate catch the attention of the viewers as the black slowly fades to the savanna where we see a regal, but old line slowly walking towards the sunset. The lion in front of us is majestic, a large mane, a thick coat, and powerful stride through its kingdom. The lion in this scene does not flinch as other animals pass by, muscle rippling throughout its body with each step. The lion moves with purpose and confidence, but slowly. Eventually you notice the lion getting smaller as it continues its walk towards the setting sun in the distance. It is impossible to ignore the magnificence of the creature, king of its domain. However, as it gets further in the distance you begin to experience sadness. The lion looks back at you from the distance, a tear in both of your eyes. As the scene fades to black Don’t Stop Me Now, by Queen comes blaring out of your television and THE AUGMENT’S LAST RIDE ….NEXT SEASON….appears in bold face caps on your TV. The commercial ends.

The commercial would feature the big stars of the SMJHL such as reigning MVP Ryuuji Minamino, speedster Jimmy Wagner and a few of the elite snipers such as Sven Svenson, Mats Marner, Jaska Seppala, and Zoltan Topalo. Of course we couldn’t forget the bruisers and slick defense of James LeBlond, Adam Friedland, Pojo Biscuit, and Mikkel Asmus Sondergard. And last, but not least the league’s star goalies Scoochie Stratton, Cale Amundsen, and Separa Borro.

Each of them would be featured in the 30 second commercial making dazzling moves, throwing fists, crushing hits, and awesome saves to the chorus of Phantogram’s song “Black Out Days”. I chose this song because it’s a recognizable tune that isn’t overly done yet. The music and highlights would also be accompanied with a few exciting messages in between to gain interest for the viewers, such as “Watch the developing stars of the future compete today for the Four Star Cup!” as well as quick clips of fans heading into their favorite team’s arena.

My commercial would center around the matchups and stars.  For the SMJHL I'd grab quotes from players like  Ryuuji Minamino, Jimmy Wagner, Kyle Sutton, try to mix older and newer players.  About why the Four star would mean so much to them.  Whether it's their last before they graduate to the Pros or if they're trying to create a dynasty.  Play highlight packs from the teams and jump to the interviews in parts.  For a soundtrack to back it I'd use Take Me Out - Franz Ferdinand .  The song just bangs and I really think it would be great hype song for the playoffs.  As for series I would highlight Newfoundland and Quebec City mostly since Newfoundland was the best team in the regular season.  I would also highlight Colorado and Kelowna as that would be a really close series with high entertainment value.  With the right editing I think this campaign would do a great job highlighting the best players currently in the league and that will make an impact at the next level.

In New Orleans we had local advertisements on all our regional TV broadcasts. There were a bunch of general play off promotions but also some new Orleans specters themed ones as well. One of the main ads was a rip straight out of the YouTube classics section. To the tune of Nelly's "here comes the boom" it was a compilation of new Orleans specters players laying waste to their opponents all around the rink. Darnell Johnson illegally elbowing Gabe Johnson in the head, Aleister Cain slashing all and sundry, Nicholas Williams running Connor Tanner into the boards and Charlie Serpe pummelling Cassius Darrow into submission were just a few of the clips cut in. There were a few complaints that it glorified violence but it served its purpose of rarking up all the southerners and getting them interested in hockey for one week of the year. Let's hope NOLA goes all the way so we can see more of these adds every time there is a commercial break.

My favorite type of NHL playoff commercials are the ones that tie in famous moments or plays from past playoffs, and include the iconic moments that define certain team's cup runs. Like the history will be made stuff. So I think for my playoff promo, I would make a video that focuses more on the history side of playoffs than the specific round 1 matchups. It would feature those types of clips that have a player doing a specific play, like a cross ice one-timer, a big open ice hit, or a goalie sliding across the crease for a glove save, but each frame of the clip is a different player doing that play from past playoffs. So the video of the slapshot for example transitions smoothly out of like 10+ past players doing the same shot, and there would be a certain bonus nostalgic effect as the clip transitions in each frame from 50 year old plays and grainy footage up until more modern video and plays. In between those shots would be footage of specific defining plays, like any OT winning goals, or big saves that kept a team from being eliminated. The music would definitely be some sort of emotional piano/orchestra based, and the final shot would be a quick frame-by-frame look of the cup raise from all 54 previous winners. The ending line of the commercial would be along the lines of 'who's turn is it' or something about cementing your name in history.

The commercial Balzams would be in would be aired in Latvia as he is better known there than in America. It would have some hard euro beats playing in the background as Leonids recaps the SHL season in about 20 seconds with some highlights in the background. After that Leonids would be on the ice in his Nevada Battleborn jersey and also plug in the fact the Nevada is the best team in the league clearly and totally should win the Four Star Cup. After that he would talk about the top players in the league, followed by some of their highlights. A quick sponsorship plug for the vodka brand Balzams, which he is named after would round out the commercial as the screen fades with the euro beats still playing. Overall this commercial would be a great success in Latvia and totally wouldn't be obnoxious. Balzams ability to promote the league in his home country is second to none.

In order to try and increase SHL viewership in Japan a playoff promo ad was creating featuring the large plethora of Japanese players that will be participating in the SHL playoffs. After Japan's 4th place finish at the IIHF the excitement in Japan to see more of these players has increased leading to this ad. The song played was Japan's last year goal song Bakugo Oi Oi OI while the ad shows highlights from the various players matching up against each other. Starting from the Buffalo vs Chicago match up featuring many Japanese players like Akira Ren, Daniel Smeb, Parker Smeb and then Monkey D Luffy, Nicholas Grum, and Rintarou Okabe. Next were some plays from Akashi SixNine on Hamilton in his upcoming series vs Manhattan, and then we moved West to an Edmonton vs Calgary series featuring Chico Smeb and Hiro Fujikawa and finally the New Orleans vs Texas series with recent transfer and hero goaltender Olli Saarinen, Jr.

Jaska Seppala is not known for his creative ways and probably should not be tasked with something like this. Especially if it is something that will be nationally broadcasted. Nevertheless, Jaska Seppala is up for the task. Jaska Seppala will start the commercial with a bunch of Knights unmasking their swords with the sun shimmering down on them. Jaska Seppala will be at the forefront of the group with Laforest and Rotti behind him. At the opposite side of the battlefield will be a bunch of raptors and falcons and other things. The messages that will be played will be about honor, loyalty, family, never giving up, trustworthiness, but most importantly about the friends we make a long the way. The music that will be accompanying this commercial for the Kelowna Knights will be select music from Kesha and Selena Gomez. Like I said Jaska Seppala does not know the first thing about making commercials

Begin scene.

Black screen.
Cue music:
Sarah McLachlan - In the arms of an angel

Black and white images and video of sad players losing playoff games rolls across the screen.

Fade to black.

Leonardo DiCaprio steps in to frame and asks you to tune into this year's playoffs to support your favorite team and players.

"Without your support, these poor haggard hockey players will die."

Fade to black.

Cue more black and white images of sad or hurt hockey players, at this point it's really just showcasing Tampa Bay and Toronto.

Fade to black.

Tom Hanks joins Leo on screen.

Tom says, "Many of these players and their franchises will never even see the playoffs. It's important to support your local teams. Just 1 view a day will help feed 17 hockey players."

Fade to black, SHL logo fades in as music comes to an end.

End scene.

Repeat ad nauseum to guilt trip viewers into watching the playoffs.
