Are True Rookies Going Extinct?

Also don't just give the expansion teams to your best friend. The league should choose someone who is going to put in the work to make a good team. If someone is going to whine and complain about how unfair it is to start with nothing, they should not be an expansion GM.

I think the expansion teams are going to be utter trash. As they should be. Let it take 5 seasons to build a competitive team. They should not be in a prime position to compete out of the gate.

I agree but if there is no competition what so ever for five seasons are rookies going to want to stay? That's my concern. I just don't want to see the team in 5 seasons only have a handful of actives and remain at the bottom of the standings.

The Season 25 draft would bolster any expansion franchise but if Season 26,27,28 are like 21, 22, 23, they will be substantially weaker.

Another issue that I see is that this league has become less cyclical over the last decade or so. That's not necessarily a bad thing (I hate how cyclical the VHL is for example) but if you are a good GM who has a strong team already and a good reputation around the boards then you can basically be good forever. Teams aren't forced to go into rebuilds anymore as the were in the past, and again, that's not a bad thing per se because the GMs that do a good job should be rewarded for this, but it makes it even tougher for bad teams to ever catch up.

If a team voluntarily decides to enter a rebuild, like New England did, then they can use their plethora of good players they have to bring in tons of good picks. Or they can just stay good forever like many others seem to be doing right now. We are seeing the effects of this already with teams like West Kendall and Toronto seemingly being in a perennial rebuild that sees them maybe having a good season or two, but not having enough quality to sustain that and they have a tough time catching up to the good teams in the league already. That's okay though, it's part of the challenge of being a GM, but the situation will be a lot lot worse for the expansion teams. The problem is not so much that they won't improve, the problem is that they will improve slowly while nobody else is forced to rebuild anymore.

And again with the current starting, junior cap, update scale and regression the way it is, there is no way for that to change anytime soon.

I actually had an idea a few days back that I thought about for a bit but then didn't post because I think it wouldn't quite work, it was basically to make the SMJHL more like the real life CHL, in that you play there for two or maybe even three seasons before you are actually drafted to the SHL, but then once they are drafted players move up to the SHL faster than they do now. Figured that it might not be a good idea though because I think the draft-hype is pretty important for most new members and it is a big help in keeping them active, we wouldn't want to take that away from them by pushing the draft back a year. Still an interesting thought-experiment.

I missed this the last two times I refreshed the thread.

It's definitely an interesting idea, but I concur - draft hype is a big part of what got me active to begin with. Granted, I got active because of the hype that we kind of developed amongst ourselves surrounding the SMJHL draft, but I can definitely see a similar effect coming into play with the SHL draft. I probably wouldn't still be here today if not for the excitement of the prospects tournament leading directly into the draft. That's why I met half the people I'm friends with on this site, and it's the reason I'm still here today.

That's a long way of saying I agree with you that pushing the draft into the SHL off by a year would be a bad idea. Like, a really long way of just saying "I agree."

With the right GM's in place and an enticing location/logo, I think the expansion teams won't have a hard time building their way up. Now if the league fucks it up and chooses the wrong GM, good luck.

Always a risk with any team. It absolutely will come down to the GMs. However, the last expansion had over 32 applications, I would imagine that this time around we can find 2 quality members to lead their new franchises.

Expansion teams should be pretty enticing for FAs as well.

Brodie Witzel (for 5 seasons)
Jackson Turska
David Winter
Brandon Sawyer
Kyle Derringer
Zach Myers
Zach Miller
Christoph Klose
Giovanni Mortellaro

Were all brand new players drafted/acquired in the first 3 seasons of Minnesota's history who stuck around in Minnesota either for entire career, or until I traded them with the exception of Witzel who was the first and only to leave in free agency.

It is possible to retain your young players. You build the right type of team and draft the right players.

I would imagine that's where their CoGM will come from. Its exciting and attractive for some, others will want to go to a guaranteed contender.

If I was a FA and didn't like Minny so much, I would kill for the chance to be part of a new franchise.
