Are True Rookies Going Extinct?
#16

Yeaaaaaah Svensson!!!! Rookie of the year AND my heart.

Sadly, I do agree with expansion. Maybe not next season, but soon.

what happens during an expansion aside from the fact that we have new teams? Do the new players automatically get drafted into the new teams?

park will have to come up with the rules for the expansion draft, whether it's 1 active from each team or whatever the case may be.
those players go into a draft and the 2 expansion teams rotate picks.
and then they enter the regular draft lottery with the other 4 non-playoff teams.

it can take an expansion team a while before they start to become competitive, but we've seen cases where it didn't take very long.
S5 was the Chiefs and Panthers expansion and the S6 Finals was Chiefs vs Panthers.
different times, of course.

S10 was the next expansion with Texas and New England.
Texas made the WCF in S11 and won the Cup in S14.
Took New England 5 seasons to make their first playoffs, but that franchise also had a rough start in terms of management.

SHL teams are too deep. Why would someone want to be a 4th line grinder when they could be a top 6 player on their SMJHL team and still gain the same amount of TPE? SHL send downs can still participate in SHL point tasks and can use the SHL weekly training while still banking anything past 350 TPE.

Perhaps if you're sent down you should only be allowed to use the SMJHL training (+3 TPE) rather than the +5 training? Would give some sort of incentive to stay up I suppose. Or don't allow them to bank their TPE? Someone who gets drafted with 330 TPE would be more inclined to stay in the SHL because if they go back to their SMJHL team they can only gain 20 more TPE over the course of the season. On the flip side of that, someone who is drafted with TPE in the mid-200's still has a lot of "development" to do and would benefit the most from going back down to juniors.

If you can't do the SHL +5 training, there should be compensation like getting to do SMJHL PTs and PGS/PbPs that are SMJHL rookie only at the moment.

I think it depends where you get drafted to and the depth of the team. When Toronto drafted me I was genuinely needed on the roster. I could've opted to stay down, but knew they drafted me to stay and help so I did just that.

Did it hurt my chances for Rookie of the Year? Yes.
Could've I have stayed in Vancouver and possibly won a Four Star Cup? Sure.
But I actually enjoyed the fact that I was one of just a couple players that were true freshman.

This is awesome, I would love if there was something in place to make it more enticing for rookies to come up instead of stay down.

I think two years in juniors is a good thing, personally.

You run into a problem when teams are so deep their prospects are in the SMJHL for 3 seasons or more. That shouldn't ever happen, unless it's a goalie or something.

Knight played 3 seasons in juny…Vliddy is on his 3rd season now
i don't see why it's a problem if the player enjoys playing in juniors

I don't know, I just feel that unless the player is a slow TPE earner they should be getting an opportunity to play in the SHL by their third year (or second eligible year).

If a player is in the mid 500s in TPE they should be in the SHL. They earned a spot in my opinion.

Yeah I also think that this is another symptom that shows that expansion will become necessary soon, especially with another very good draft coming up. Unless we see a big wave of retirements or established players going inactive, there might not even be a place on an SHL-roster for all these players even after they spend an extra season in juniors. Just consider that all the S24 players are currently still down in the SMJHL, that means that we'll likely see about 25 of them entering the SHL next season and then the year afterwards it might be even more players from the S25 draft.

Who has room for all these players? Just using Seattle as an example, we certainly don't. We currently have six active defensemen plus our GM who will be coming up next season, nine or ten active forwards and two active goalies plus another one in juniors. On top of that we have four or five other send-downs who might push onto the roster as early as next season and three picks in the first two rounds of the upcoming draft and don't forget that we just traded away a bunch of picks for Carter O'Callahan last off-season, so we could have even more picks if we hadn't done that. And it's not that Seattle is a super stacked powerhouse or anything, we are just another team in the West and probably not the only one with a situation like that.

Vuro Vlaters, the guy we just traded away in the McKeil-deal, was a prime example why I think the current situation will not be good for the league long-term. The guy spend an extra year down in juniors, then played on the 4th line for his rookie season and now, in his sopohomore year, was still stuck on the 4th line despite constantly earnining TPE over the last few seasons and being in the 600 TPE-range now. I think it speaks volumes of his character that he still stayed active through all of this, being stuck on the bottom lines like this must really take a toll on a players motivation and everyone less determined will likely leave because of that. I'm talking about all these people who don't want to spend much time on the SHL, who maybe only log in once or twice a week and do their training and stuff but rarely participate in PTs. You know, the kinds of members that we were actually kinda proud to be a place for because they could still have fun here whereas they would've been lost in a pure PT-league like most others are. Nowadays the SHL is not a league for these players anymore and even really active players are being pushed down the depth-charts more and more if they don't take advantage of absolutely every TPE-opportunity there is. It's especially problematic for all these players that joined after the Season 20 "Super Draft" I think, because they are now stuck behind like thirty or fourty 1000+ TPE players from this draft alone that they will need years to catch up to, and that's not even including the seasons afterwards where some players are already closing in on 1000 TPE as well.

So yeah, I think expansion needs to happen, and actually sooner rather than later. An expansion draft, like Alex mentioned, should help get some active players on these new teams while also making sure that none of the old teams get depleted too much. There are lots of possible systems to ensure that and I had actually drawn up a plan for how this expansion draft could work a while back, I could look for it and post it here if you guys want.
