Contract Structure Proposal

Does it matter? Under the proposal, their contracts would be shifted up to the proper tier anyway.
1. GMs may not want to have contracts under a certain TPE structure indefinitely if a player is entering their prime and may be eligible for a lower tier later.
2. Contracts longer than 10 years are dumb.

It's an interesting proposal. I don't know if I agree with getting rid of the hometown discount entirely....I also think if this were to be done as written (that is to say, with getting rid of the hometown discount) you'd probably also need to look at whether or not the current salary cap will still work because suddenly half the league's contracts will double.

The salary cap needing to rise to accommodate at least some of the impacts of this is a potential concern.

Also, what would the penalty be for people (like we saw with Buffalo) who try to circumvent the rules and don't claim the TPE until late? Just readjustment of the contract, or forfeiture of the TPE?

a drawback of this is that it essentially makes negotiating contracts useless, as that was one of my favorite parts of signing deals lol but that's just me

Since I have been around people have wanted the salary cap to actually matter.

I think this does a pretty good job of that, wouldn't one say?

Will contract always adjusted up or only for the S34 offseason?

Always, starting S34

As always, I don't fully understand the consequences of this change but I am vehemently opposed to it because it means I have to learn something.

Seems like it would be a nightmare to verify each season.

Forcing the contract up every offseason (assuming they move up a tier) isn't the best solution in my mind. Having the ability to lock up a player for a few years at a bargain is all part of the real salary cap fun. However, locking them up for 20 seasons is garbage. I think just having a max term on contracts and eliminating the hometown discount would solve a lot of problems.

If we make it so everyone's contract is upgraded when they hit a new tpe tier then we might as well just scrap contracts and give players a fixed salary based on tpe. Why sign a player for 6 seasons and get yourself locked into a contract with a player who may go inactive or something? There's no benefit to the team or the player to have a mutli season contract at this point because the player will always make a base salary and they can never make less. There's no creative contract negotiations and no creative cap trades.

This will probably be the most difficult thing to enforce. A possible solution is to simply have a hard cutoff date by the end of a week before the following activity check begins. Any points not claimed within that last week will be forfeited. This would also help with regression.

I agree with this.

Reducing the maximum length of contracts to ANYTHING makes the rule to upscale a contract based on TPE unnecessary and allows GM to make creative bridge deals for certain players.

Not to mention we don't have to do a contract audit every damn off season just to make sure.

Once we figure out the "cutoff" date, it should simply be a matter of looking at the roster pages to verify.

Exactly! I think this would be a major overcorrection.

1. GMs may not want to have contracts under a certain TPE structure indefinitely if a player is entering their prime and may be eligible for a lower tier later.
2. Contracts longer than 10 years are dumb.

Then don't sign your players to one.

If a player wants to sign long term and the GM is fine with it, there's no reason to put a restriction on it if we're adjusting contracts ever offseason anyway.

Were we not adjusting contracts every offseason then I'd be more inclined to agree.
