I can only speak for my past case. There were extraordinary events that led to me going belly up. It had the appearance to me that there was a bias against the two expansion teams in the league. That appearance was probably mostly due to a set of bad coincidences. I got blindsided by the punishment handed out in a tampering rule that I wasn't aware of. My team lost all the other draft choices from my year from bannings and inactivity. It got worse from there and I threw in the towel.
I think that the prospect of going back to the SMJHL and having to follow two leagues was a minor factor. I agree with you that it's better for me to go straight to the SHL if I reach that point. A third or even fourth line role for wouldn't bother me. I'd like to be in the league I'm doing TPE in as fast as possible. Being an SHL send down feels a bit like being in Limbo.

Because despite being a Firebird legend, Prince George never inducted Pivonka. I think we can all agree that's a travesty of injustice. And despite Schultz being a#1 overall pick and team captain Montreal never inducted Roman Schultz into their Hall of Fame like Hamilton did.
So yes, I show appreciation for Vancouver recognizing my greatness. B)

I know how you feel. Hamilton had to deal with a tampering punishment that seemed to come out of nowhere as well, and it hurt the franchise. That was compounded further by the fact that I drafted poorly and about half of our first round picks ended up going inactive, retiring, or being traded elsewhere. Luckily, Hamilton was a franchise that had existing pieces before all of that, and Dangles moving those pieces once he took over has given the team a chance to get back on their feet.
The expansion teams didn't have those pieces before the clusterfuck struck, so they've really been suffering. It's starting to look like they're on their way to recovering, though. They're still a ways off, but they're moving in the right direction.

You can always request to stay in the SHL. Most GM's will accommodate you.
I know I personally prefer staying in the SHL after drafting. I stayed more active and I've gotten a lot more attached to my players when I work them up from 3rd pairing/4th line to top line player but I may never win a Junior Cup as a result of it.

Huh, I totally disagree. I mean, not with the TPE levels, that's more or less right, but I think if I'd been called up as a rookie I would have gone inactive. Being a senddown in the SMJHL means you get a taste of what it feels like to be a really dominant player, and for me at least, that was incentive to earn TPE as quick as possible so I could get back to doing that in the SHL. If I'd been called up, playing 5min a game, scoring like one point the whole season? Not as much fun.
But yes, most GMs will accommodate your request, whether sending you down or calling you up. Because we want you to stay happy and not walk in FA :D
If you get called up and only play a few minutes a night, you need to focus on sucking less.
28 points as a rookie on a bottom feeder? HoFer right here.

If you get called up and only play a few minutes a night, you need to focus on sucking less.
28 points as a rookie on a bottom feeder? HoFer right here.

Take a look at folks like Garbanzo and Creller to get a feel for what it was like.

With Clitsome I got 18mins a game and 21 points as a rookie in the SHL right after my draft. With Schultz I got just under 17 minutes a game, 12 points in my rookie season as a defensive Dman.
Maybe y'all need to build better players and not suck as hard.

In my experience there's usually more active members in the SHL LR, and more stuff to do regarding the SHL to keep you active. The SMJHL especially when it was starting its season 2 weeks after the SHL was always boring to me with the exception of the year I had Pivonka but that's because everyone in the SHL was literally all 99s in every attribute and there were no player types or diversity at all. You had to go to the SMJHL to see what it was like to have a different player than everyone else.

Interesting stuff about the SMJHL vs SHL and rookie years. At the end of the day, I don't think that I'd ever quit the SHL because it bored me. I never have quit for that reason.
It's the chaos of the league that I struggle with. It's the all the banned and suspended players, all the tinkering with the update scale, and the real or even possible use of the league's weapon of mass destruction, the tampering rule. You're putting a lot of your time and effort into something that's built on quicksand. All the other stuff about activity, my player's performance and whatnot is fairly trivial. It will take care of itself if the environment remains good and if someone else doesn't blow up my whole team just as I'm getting started.
To bring things full circle, that's the reason behind the thread. This time, I know what I'm getting into.
The rules are indeed the rules and must be followed. It's up to others who have more invested here than I do to change them. I'm looking for a way to keep it casual, make it to an SHL team that has a chance to build something, without getting so invested in the SHL that I freak out when the whole thing blows up around me. Less activity is more. I need to keep my distance to enjoy this. The consensus seems to be that I need to get 500 TPE to reach my goal. Anything more is gravy.
