S50 PT #1 - Season 50 Anniversary Gala

It's a bit of a strange meeting. Two stories that began mere blocks away from each other now converging. The two couldn't be any more different. While retired, Dakota Reid still stands at 6'2" and doesn't look like she's slowed down at all in her workout routine. Raquel Castillo Gutierrez, a fairly scrawny 5'7". Both grew up in the same Chicago neighborhood around Archer and Pulaski. They probably wouldn't realize it, but Koda probably had work done on her car by Rocky's father. Koda was a local legend. She'd found a way to live in the area during her entire career, so Rocky knew who she was. She wanted to be like her. But how could she? Koda was an enforcer, someone who put their body on the line for her team. Rocky found her own way, through shooting.

It was a short conversation, but Rocky wouldn't forget Koda's one piece of advice: "Family First"

A: Many of the notable retired players from SHL lore are in attendance at the event. What legend from the SHL past are you seeking out at the event and what will you talk about with them? Describe who you're looking for and how you go about meeting them.

I have always wanted to meet LAP legend Brian Morley, he played over 750 games in SHL and scored almost 600 points, but its not his offensive skills that is the reason why he is one of my favorite players, it's his ability make leather vests look good with everything, he even has is own leather vest line. That is the main talking point between us as far as I´m considered, I want to ask from him if he can maybe hook me up with some cool vests.

The first thing is, of course, to try and find him, I would ask around from people if they have seen Morley, the staff might know for sure. When I have managed to get the information, I will walk up to Morley and ask if I could shake his hand, then casually try to start a conversation, ask about the leather vest he is wearing now and smoothly move on to asking couple for myself. Depending on if he is with his wife or girlfriend, I might ask if she can give information on leather vest sizes for women, so my girlfriend can wear one as well.

B: What are you doing throughout the night? Who are you seated with? What's going on at your table throughout the night's events? How's the food and drink?

Jules Watt is obviously partying throughout the night, and hanging out with all the players who were snubbed for awards, most notably himself @SlashACM and @Boomcheck. At the beginning of the evening, the group of players went around talking to anyone and everyone who would hear their cases for what they were missed for. Cain complained about the eligibility rule, Watt listed stats as to why he should've been on the all rookie team, and Boomcheck was spitting out crazy conspiracy theories about how Russians were controlling the SHL and were out to get him. As the night progressed, the players eventually sat with their respective teams and partied. The Chicago table was a bit of a bore though. @JNH didn't show up because he was golfing, @O4L was asleep the whole event, and @SDCore was drinking the amazing beer all night, and talking about how it was brewed perfectly. The food at the event was mediocre though, but everyone enjoyed the booze.

I'll be honest, I'm not a very social person. A lot of my night is spent sitting at my table listening to the chatter of other people or just being on my phone. I'm not much of a fan when it comes to big events. Seated at the table along side me are the Crows I played with last year, Yamamoto Mitsuhara, Aron Hernadivic, Sasha Dangelchek, and a few of the other rookies from last season. We spent some time discussing the last season, things we did well, things we're working on this offseason and what our goals are moving into the next season. Now let me tell you, the food was just incredible. We shared a bottle of nice wine throughout the night and I had a wonderful steak as my meal. The only bad thing was that it melted in my mouth too much and there wasn't enough time to savor the flavor.

It goes without saying I’m here under strong protest; I hate these sort of events, but my teammates (both current and past) insisted I attend.

While I have the opportunity, I’m going to seek out Kristoffer Ruud, one of the greatest SMJHL players in Colorado franchise history. I wasn’t able to match many of his franchise records in juniors, but I grew to respect him a great deal from the stories I heard in Colorado from his Mammoths days. Few would cite his SHL career, largely with Texas, as anything particularly impressive, but I still want the chance to sit and talk with the man himself. The recently retired Finn Kruger was able to help introduce us at the event, and our conversations were largely about food and training routines.

I’m sitting, thankfully, with a menagerie of former teammates. Sebastian Frost is a table over, beaming over at our table full of his past stars: Tony Pepperoni, Julio Tokolosh, Alex Winters, Jakub Novak, J.P. Gay, and myself. A few of the guys have brought their partners with them, to fill out our table. Alex Selich is notably elsewhere (I am rather disappointed), sitting with his legendary forebear, Eduard, and some impressive Buffalo alumni (Brynjar Tusk, Alexis Metzler, and Viktor Vorkampfer) across the room. Hats is notably playing practical jokes on Toko and Pepperoni (some things never change). I noticed some of the Winnipeg contingent glaring at Hats, because he chose to sit with us still instead of move to join his current team. My young Czech friend is blissfully happy, as ever. J.P. is making faces at Kim Jong Fun as he slips his former coach shot after shot from multiple flasks hidden in his $6,900 suit. I hope to be home in bed long before things turn ugly.

C: As the night turns into morning and the drinks have been flowing, things start to get a bit unruly. Describe what's happening by the end of the night, once the older folks have gone home and the true party animals are in charge.

While the event itself is a special thing to be a part of and will forever be in Kane's memory, the after-party is what he's most excited about. All the veterans of the league have left with their families while the young prospects and young SHL players all gather up and decide to bar hop. As you can imagine, that is a lot of people and these bars filled up big time once the snapchat stories and instagram stories started to be posted. Everyone was popping bottles and having a good time. Kane saw Booth there with his Panther teammates and decided to pull a prank on him. He'd offer up to do shots with Booth and fake it by having water for himself. Eventually, Booth got so plastered he was dancing on the tables in his underwear. Everyone's got those videos saved on their phones and we won't be letting it go forever.

I'm not a huge party animal, so my guy does what he always does and hangs back and takes it all in. My player is hanging with his teammates on Buffalo, usually Darrow or he is wandering around looking for former Raptors teammates to catch up on life. Most of my table is reminiscing about the last cup win, 62% comes up frequently as well as something that happened in the off-season where the GM was told to hold this L. Both of these antic-dotes cause raucous laughter amongst the Buffalo table. The food is awesome, though my guy tends to go for the lower tiered stuff like the shrimp or the BBQ. He's not a big drinker, so after a couple of glasses of champagne it isn't surprising to see him fill a champagne glass with ginger ale instead. Other than mingling and eating, not much else my guy does. I am this boring RL too, sorry.

B. Nick Connolly is getting absolutely obliterated at the open bar, as anyone should regardless of their celebrity status. He can be seen challenging his Anaheim teammates to all sorts of drinking contests. He also seems to have a cold as he’s sniffling quite a bit. Hope he doesn’t get his teammates sick. The Anaheim table is one of the rowdier SMJHL groups and are making a ton of noise throughout people’s speeches. Who raised these guys? At one point, Connolly stood on a chair and said a few words. He said “I killed a giant when I was 10. Then I climbed right into bed with his wife. When she woke up, you know what she did? Suckled me at her teat for three months. Thought I was her baby. That’s how I got so strong: giant’s milk.” Then he toppled over and passed out on the ground. What an inspiration to the youth.

E: Describe the red carpet scene leading up to the event - who's making the biggest splash? Who's wearing the wildest outfit?

I had a great outfit planned for the whole night. Shirtless with short shorts. I was so ready to show off my powers and be the talk of the whole thing. I even took it upon myself to have professional photos taken of me. They looked excellent! I passed out these pictures the day before the event in the St Louis locker room. To say the least, the Scarecrows did not like the idea of me not being dressed fully. They felt the aurora coming off my chest muscles was too much. For them, I added a tank top in the color of power, red. I also put on a big belt with a gold buckle. I changed the short shorts for skin tight leather pants, in black. I arrived on the red carpet sporting the outfit above as well as a nice leather red coat. I quickly tossed awesome red jacket to the crowd to show off my pecks. I think I was the biggest hit as they escorted my glorious self straight out the back door to the alley with a piece of paper that said to never return.

A: Parker Smeb went to the anniversary gala on the lookout for his hero. He went to the anniversary show hoping to be sat at a table with his idol Steven Jalopski but what he got was something much worse. Aidan Richan started telling young Parker about the glory days of SHL, he told him about the horror stories of WadeyB as commissioner. He told him about his all-time SHL hitting record. He bragged about the time he created SHL Fantasy for the league and brought in 2 new teams into the league under his watch as commissioner but was somehow still not voted into the HOF as a builder. He told him about how he set the record for the highest all-time winning % as a GM by winning back to back cups with the Dragons and how he wasn't inducted into the HOF as a GM but a GM with zero cups was instead. He then gave Parker some advice about his converstion to defense and advised him that the should leave his Smeb brothers behind on Chicago to be a superstar on a different team like Aidan did when he left Calgary in S11. Then Aidan fell asleep at their table and Parker went home.

A.

All of Stevenson Sr. old teammates. I would seek them all out one by one. From Jackson Turska to Niklas Wastlund to Jon Doran. Any of the guys that Stevenson Jr grew up watching and idolizing while his dad was still playing. It would be nice to get to catch up with them and at least make having to be here more tolerable I would want to talk about all the old days things that I can remember and get the whole story on things I don't. The main one I would want to catch up with though is Brandon Sawyer. Stevenson Sr. Played with Sawyer from Juniors until Sawyer retired. It was a long time friendship and one that Stevenson Sr regrets losing for sure. Sawyer was always around growing up, he was a great goalie and dad was always grateful to know that Sawyer was back there in case he screwed up his job on defense.

One of the more shocking things seen on the red carpet had to have been the arrival of SHL hall of famer Big Manius. Although seeing a hall of famer at this event is not shocking but what was shock was the stunning beauty that arrived with him that was the shocking part. Once she step out of the limo with Manius in tow people's mouths dropped. Needless to say people were certainly talking about them as no one could understand how Big Manius land such a lovely woman. They made quite the entrance taking interviews on their way into the event.

SHL media absolutely ate the couple up, fawning all over them trying to capture this moment for prosperity. Of course, some individuals such as Slappy McDoodle were convinced that she had to be a prostitute as opposed to his actual girlfriend. Manius took this ribbing well and pointed out that there are some perks of being a hall of fame SHL player.

As Barrett Blackwood mentioned, Aron Hernadivic aka Captain Fish lost a team bet in humiliating fashion, and had to show up to the S50 Gala in a fish costume. While here, Captain Fish endured a terrible time. It turns out losing a bet that allows your teammates to dictate what you have to wear to a fancy Gala is a terrible bet to make. Initially showing up with the other Crows including alternate captains Blackwood, Sasha Dangelchek, and James Ronlain, Captain Fish didn't even make it past security, as they thought it was somebody trying to crash the party in order to get two time SMJHL MVP winner Nicolaj Muller's autograph. Fish had to wait for his current GMs, Nicholas WIlliams and Yamamoto Mitsuharu to show up to convince security he was who he said he was. Once inside, Hernadivic was the talk of the party, as nobody could believe this dude actually showed up in a fish costume. The crows had a good rest of their night, pounding the pink whitneys and some white wine maybe too much, as a couple of them needed to be helped out of the gala.
