Contract Structure Proposal

I think removing hometown discounts is a terrible idea. This league is for fun. Players who show loyalty and want to stay with the same team and with the same group of friends should be allowed to play for less money if they choose to.

Again, this league is for fun, if someone is having fun on their team and wants to be a team player and take a discount they should be allowed to do that. That's always the way it's been as long as I've been here (S17). Players do that irl also.

I feel eliminating hometown discounts would force teams to move players who wanted to stay because the team would not be able to afford them. That's not the point of this league imo and would negatively effect someone's experience and activity.

I would strongly reccommend we keep hometown discounts regardless of tpe tier changes.

If you build a good team, create a fun environment where people want to play and more importantly stay (Calgary is a good example) those teams should be allowed to keep their players together as they grow. They should not be forced to move a player to a place he does not want to play because of certain restrictions.

I don't think we need to make any changes at all and especially not eliminating hometown discounts.

As someone who's been an SHL GM for 9 seasons and has built one of the strongest and deepest rosters in the league, I've found it hard enough to keep all my players under the cap even with hometown discounts and all my contracts are pretty low. I don't think GM's with deep rosters should be handcuffed even more by eliminating these discounts, especially on top of potential increase in contract tiers. That's just not needed.

Remember, change is not always needed. This is not the NHL. This is a simulated hockey league, for fun, where people come to hang out and enjoy a group of friends/teammates.

Let's not lose sight of that and start overthinking things.

If you must adjust contract tiers, that's one thing, but do not remove hometown discounts.

Thank you.

I think adjusting the contract tiers is an absolute must. However, I do think there is reason to keep the idea of hometown discounts, albeit with some tweaks to ensure they aren't out of hand, perhaps including the amount of players a team is allowed to have on hometown discounts at a given time.

While I am for adjusting minimum contracts each season as players increase in TPE, I think what lil says has some merit. Perhaps make rookie contracts static while all future contracts adjust with TPE. I'm not totally sure if this is already the case but if this were done, rookie contracts should obviously be capped at three seasons.

I think the cap structure is one of the most broken aspects of the SHL. It discourages competition and allows for teams who, admittedly because of good GMing, to essentially establish dynasties while other teams become mired in mediocrity or worse. It is always better for a son league to have more parity and not create a situation where members feel like they must be on one of a few teams to have a chance at a cup.

They wouldn't be seeking FA, their team would be unable to retain them because said team already has 7X other high TPE players, and cannot afford an 8th. As has already been said, if the current changes occurred, only 1 team would be over the limit.... there wouldn't be mass exodus of players from teams they "love".

Exactly. Why not have it do something? Otherwise, might as well get rid of it.

Just get rid of the cap all together, then. The entire idea behind the "HTD" is to circumnavigate the cap, and avoid having to move any players. At least if we scrapped the cap people like me- who don't really enjoy doing media, and suck at graphics can get a contract that allows me to do less of it. I like getting involved with discussions about things like this, but I'm not getting paid for my contributions, ya know? (wait, Bojo, how about we just start paying people for every posts word count?! Sweet, k thx. Wink)

Again, only one team would be over the cap if this adjustment happened, right? 1 team. It's not like we're breaking up the entirety of every good team and "forcing" everyone who enjoys their team to join the bottom dwellers where they'll hate life here and leave. I get why people are afraid of that, but it just wouldn't be happening. GMs would have time to adjust and plan accordingly.

"forced to move a player to a place he does not want to play" - better scrap the draft Wink

-----

Something that I think of here is, different people are here for different reasons. Me? I like the notion of building a player and being successful in a sim league that is closer to reality. That means I accept things that happen in the real league- like player movement, even away from a team I like, as 100% OK. If my team is against the cap and chooses another player to retain over me- I come out with a chip on my shoulder with the other team. With Groupme and Discord so prevalent, I'm not losing touch with my buddies, but I definitely have a reason to root against my old team. It's fun.

Some people are more or less in it for the company, I suppose, they settle into their clique, and don't want to venture outside of it. Not my style, but hey, fair enough.

So what I'm really trying to say here is, no matter what you do, there's no pleasing everyone individually. It's more about what's best for the league. Is increased parity between teams, which may mean the occasional player ends up having to change teams, more valuable in keeping people engaged? Or, is allowing people to just come together and stay as a group, regardless of what that does to competitiveness in the league, more worth it? Luckily, I don't have to decide, I just toss my opinion out there and go with the flow. Good luck, Bojo!

Honestly for the good of the Cap I think te hometown discount has to be changed. There are several options to reward loyalty. You can either Cap the hometown discounts to a certain number of longest tenured players like 2-3 are only able to get that while the discount is only a flat 1M instead of half of the contract .Or maybe give every person that reaches the hometown discount $1M from the Managerial Cap which ultimately only rewards the player for the loyalty and not the team and would cap hometown discounts at 5 because you only have 5M in the management budget.

This is a SUPER rough draft right now but what about a structure like this??

I will expand it with the rest of the other teams later tonight when I am home and have more time to work this out. But I am using Calgary as a base example.

New Salary Structure Tab – Tab 5 at the bottom!

So more or less we set a BASE Expected salary for a TPE value. (See on the left)
We allow “Hometown” discounts to a max amount (again on the left)

So in Calgary’s current situation with NO Hometown discounts they are 10 million over the league salary cap. Forcing them to make some hard choices on who to keep. BUT if players are willing to stay on the team and take some Hometown discounts (Like I assume many would) it would bring that number down quickly and give them still some space to make some moves (Pretty sure some players just re signed at like the 3-4M mark when by my chart they should be in the 6 range for example).

Max FA years on signing: 5
Max Re sign years: 7

Allows teams to sign longer if player want, but still restricts the massive contract a bit, but 7 seasons is plenty.
I Feel like this could create some creativity with managing rosters. Allow a hometown discount to a degree, and maybe make FA a bit more exciting. Thoughts?

Edit #1: Entering salary for MINIMUM contract expectations on my scale, not using CURRENT contracts signed too. Heres some more comparables.

Edmonton - $57.0 Million (+13.0 in cap space) no hometown discounts
Hamilton - $35.0 Million (+35.0 in cap space) NHD
Portland - $23.5 Million (+46.5) NHD
New England - $75.0 Million (-5.0) NHD

(I will finish all 12 teams later tonight!!Wink
