The Prospect Tournament is underway here in St. Louis. After 3 games played, Chuck Bernstein, who is playing left wing for the Blazers this tournament, had this to say about his performance:

"It's been fun! We had a great first game. Clint stepped up big from the blue line and set us off to a good start. Took me a minute to find my groove and get the pace of the game, but once the second period came around I think we all started to click together a little bit more. I got a great pass over to Isak who shoveled it to Griffin. An assist on what turned out to be the game winning goal, definitely can't complain about that."

Bernstein went on to score a goal, his first goal of the tournament, in the 3rd period of game 3 for the Blazers. "You know, I just hadn't been shooting the puck enough. I think I had 3 shots on goal in the first two games, so coach told me to start putting some more on net. We were down 4-2 going into the 3rd and I just took it upon myself to get things moving. Yuri hit a shot wide of the net which just kinda slid to me in the open slot and after a good block by their goaltender I was able to hammer home my own rebound. We started to come back a bit and tied it up, but fell short because we took a dumb penalty right there at the end. But hey, that's hockey."

Bernstein is 1 - 1 for 2 points so far with a +1 rating over 3 games. He's tied for 4th in scoring and in a 3-way tie for goals with his fellow prospects. Maybe with a few more games under his belt and some more shots on goal, this two-way forward will start to light up the scoreboard.

Through 2 games in the first day of the Prospect Tournament in St. Louis, the Outlaws are 2-0. Colton Hagan, a RW, recorded 3 goals in those two games, on only 6 shots, for an impressive 50% shooting percentage. Hagan had this to say about his performance so far.

"Obviously I'm very happy with my play so far. 3 goals in 2 games isn't something that happens a lot in juniors, and to have it happen against some of the best players heading into the SMJHL draft this year is something that I definitely enjoyed, and something that I hope to keep up, because being able to score is important. The only thing I'm not happy with is my physical play. You know, four hits really isn't enough, especially for a guy like me who is supposed to be taking it to the other team, but I think it's really just a speed adjustment for me, and I'll be able to get back to it tomorrow. It really is just a step faster than the USHL, and so I'll be able to make that adjustment and rock more bodies tomorrow, and hopefully keep on scoring goals. It'll be great to get back out there and work more tomorrow."

June 2, 2017 – St. Louis, Missouri

We are five games into the 2017 SMJHL Prospect Showcase tournament here in St. Louis. The Lions are off to a decent start winning three of their five games thus far. I was able to speak to Oliver König today before his morning skate with the team.

How are things going for you so far, Oli?: Yeah! Things are great. We got off to a slow start but I think the last few games we were able to turn that around and we’re really clicking offensively now. You know, I am just excited to be here and be around the other prospects. They really are a great group of guys.

How are are you and the Lions planning on approaching the rest of the tournament? Well, we’re going to keep playing our game. We’ve got a great group of guys here all trying to increase their draft stock and competition is stiff from the other teams. I don’t really think this tournament is about winning or losing, but more so getting our names out there.

What would you improve upon personally? I think I’ve been a bit slow on the ice the past few games and maybe my positioning has been a little off. It has been a while since I was on the ice with competition of this caliber. I will say that this showcase has been awesome for my conditioning.

König has 4 assists and a +/- of 2 after 5 games.

Be sure to watch the rest of the exciting prospects in the remaining games of the SMJHL Prospect Showcase!

Sami Owens is currently playing in the Prospect showcase for the first place Outlaws through 5 games. The Outlaws are 3-0-2 thus far into the showcase. Sami Owens has been pretty good thus far netting 1 goal and 2 assists for 3 points so far in the tournament. He also has been fairly physical with 8 hits and 4 shots blocked. The Outlaws have quite some good defenseman on their team with Arthur Dayne leading the way for the team with a whopping 9 points in the tournament which is good for tops for defenseman too. One area Sami Owens is going to have to improve is physically. Owens needs to be use the body more often and try to become a physical threat on the ice. Another area he needs to improve is his defense. Although his defense is not terrible right now, it needs to improve a bit. He definitely has the defensive IQ to pass in the SMJHL but he needs to put it together along with his game. Based on the competition Sami Owens has been a bit disappointing thus far, but he is also pretty raw physically so in reality he needs more time to develop his game, compared to some of the other prospects in the tournament. Other than that, he has been decent thus far, but a lot of improvements are needed.

204 Words. Roman Augustus

Through 5 games of the Prospects showcase tournament Roman Augustus is putting up a respectable showing. As a two way defenseman, Roman Augustus has prided himself on contributing on both sides of the ice. Through the first 5 games Augustus has put up 1 goal and 1 assist while posting a +3 on his +/-. While Augustus hasn't had a chance on the PP unit yet he had played some on the penalty kill while blocking 8 shots so far good for 2nd best on the team. Unfortunately for Augustus is his lack in discipline at times. While he doesn't have a respectable amount of hits so far with only 3 one of those lead to an unnecessary roughing minor. Augustus now sits at 4 penalty minutes so far through the tournament after a high sticking as well Also, while Augustus has the lowest average time on ice for the Lions D he does have the second highest shot percentage showing that good things can come if given the proper oppurtunity. Augustus has matched up decently in his limited role on the 3rd pairing for the Lions and looks to continue to build going forward as the Lions look to win the Prospect Showcase.

The S35 Prospects Tournament in St. Louis is underway, with prospects battling for bragging rights and the attention of SMJHL scouts. 18-year-old Roland Scith is one of these players, and is a starting goaltender for the Stingrays, one of four teams in the tournament. The team has just one win - a closely contested shootout victory against the Outlaws- in five games. A post-game interview revealed Scith's frustrations.

"You come to a new place and you want to do well, and when things don't go well it's definitely disappointing."

This is Scith's first taste of North American hockey after playing in Scotland for the past 5 years. He's posted a 3.64 GAA and his save percentage is at an underwhelming .870— 17 goals allowed over 131 shots against.

However, Scith is not entirely to blame. Six players on the team have only either one or zero points, the most out of any team, and their top point scorer with four points would rank 3rd or below in points scored on any other roster. The Stingrays also lead the league in Pim/GP with a whopping 17.20 minutes. He was asked if he thought his poor stats were a result of his team's play.

"I don't like to point fingers, I think everyone's responsible. I understand there's some issues with the offense and some discipline issues but my numbers aren't acceptable right now. It's up to me to find my game and give this team a chance to win."

In St. Louis, MO, the SMJHL Prospects Tournament is underway. The Outlaws have taken a strong lead on the other teams with a record of 3-0-2. The prominent stars on the Outlaws include the defensive pairing of Arthur Dayne and Bobski Vlad Jokel. These two have combined for 15 points, 9 hits, and only 4 PIMs in five games. These two defensemen have been lethal for the Outlaws. A pleasant surprise, Dayne leads the entire prospect tournament in scoring. Known primarily as a defensive defenseman, Dayne has taken this tournament to showcase his offensive prowess to the scouts. In the Outlaws’ two losses, Dayne failed to record a single point. After the tough 4-3 loss to the Blazers, Dayne commented that he “needs to improve his consistency. Some games, I’ll get two or three points, and others, I’ll be invisible. Doesn’t look good in front of the scouts, and I’m going to try my hardest to be better every single night.” Some brutal honesty from this young star, but those words show character and self-awareness. Regardless, Dayne’s 9 points in 5 games is an extraordinary feat, especially for a defenseman. Scouts from the SMJHL (and maybe even the SHL) will be watching this young man closely, and he may become a star in the years to come.

The showcase has hardly been a great opportunity for Togole Bitties to show what he's got. To say there's a disconnect between Tigole Bitties and the coaching staff would be fair. Tigole is being rolled out as a secondary, depth player. He's seeing 10:00-14:00 minutes a game, with the other center men on the Lions seeing 18:00-20:00 minutes per game. This has seriously impacted Bittties' offensive output, and it's frustrating him greatly.

The Lions themselves have been a story of two teams. They've been absolutely demolished in one game by a score of 7-2, but have grinded and outworked their opponents in their other games in the showcase. Maybe that's partly due to Bitties' faceoff prowess and the Lions' holding the "Lions share" of possession. See what I did there?

Needless to say, there's one more batch of games leading into the showcase playoffs. Tigole Bitties isn't happy with how it's gone so far, but with the coaching staff seeing more wins than losses, it probably won't be changing. The pressure falls onto Tigole Bitties to make more happen in his limited time on the ice. You have to give him credit though - 50% shooting percentage is pretty crazy!

RIP Dangel. See you on the other side, brother
