PT 5 - Rivalry Night
#31

When you look at the biggest rivalries in the SMJHL one stands out in paticular: Montreal Militia vs. Detroit Falcons. These teams have a long history, and the rivalry only is getting more intense as S35 carries on. The militia are within 2 points of the Falcons, despite leading the season series 4-5. And in the 9 games that they've faced off, many of them came down to the wire, and were especially brutal.

Rookie Kevin Marks had this to say on the rivalry:
"We go into every game with a must-win attitude, but when we see Montreal next on the schedule, something changes. We know we've gotta be animals, we gotta beat their level of intensity on the ice. Some of the rooks in the locker room don't really know the history of the rivalry, but it doesn't matter. We are such a close squad that any personal enemies become team enemies."

And that's the truth. We saw a line brawl between the two teams after Montreal scored an OT goal, then 2 game misconduct penalties the following night when Detroit edged a 3-2 win. Both of these teams are currently fighting to stay in playoff contention, and have a lot to play for as we enter the second half of the season.

Here's to hoping to see a drama-filled playoff matchup between these to heavyweights.

While not nearly as heated as the other rivalries in the league, such as the storied Kelowna versus the entire fucking league and, uh . . . that's really it, the Prince George Firebirds have found (anti) competition when facing the Halifax Raiders.

The "rivalry", if it can be called that (I thought it looked more like a Children's Wish Foundation fundraiser and I was playing!Wink has been blown out of proportion with thanks to the teams in playoff spots, the first overall series, and our own self-deprecation, it's okay though, perhaps we'll stop playing like shit, get first overall and then Colorado will stop making fun of us.

The "Toilet Bowl", as it came to be known, was played on day twenty-seven of the regular season and Halifax and Prince George were ultimate and penultimate in the league and the game would be something to match that.

I think the teams thought the first was the warm -up because nothing happened, they hardly crossed center ice into the other team's half. Apparently the Firebirds agreed to have shooting practice in their half though, how nice. Jay Beagle Jr. is probably the beneficiary of this fundraiser, as he shoots the puck over the glass to get the first period's only penalty. Oh shit, it's the second and they decided to start playing hockey! Colton Hagan scores while Halifax is busy having a water break and then gets in trouble interrupting the goalie while he was drinking, so that's two minutes for interference.

The team's look somewhat organized in the third, in fact, there was even a powerplay goal executed by the Firebirds. If that doesn't sum up who wins the game, I don't know what will . . . oh yeah, the score. Speaking of which, the Raiders score one late but who cares. The only interesting thing aside from the powerplay goal is the stick-swinging competition held between Kristy O'Sullivan and Montek Ramrap. They both tried to do their best Phil Kess- oh shit, I forgot he doesn't exist in this universe. Anyway, both of them lose, because they both suck. This is the Toilet Bowl after all and that's the game. The three stars, or the only hockey players who attended the game are Prince George goalie Artom Zhumbayev, the only forward with actual skill on the ice Dani Forsberg and that one Halifax player who scored.

Wait, why do we even have a rivalry? We're on opposite sides of the country and the first overall series is weeks away.

After a little research (or searching the rookie discord for "Toilet Bowl") the first hit was from none other than my teammate, Hagan, but he was traded to Colorado a few weeks later . . . It's a conspiracy!

<object width="460" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/hAAlDoAtV7Y"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/hAAlDoAtV7Y" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="460" height="315"></embed></object>

Colorado and Hagan had been talking for months and had been planning this out. The league was scared of me and my crazy-good scoring in the prospect showcase, so they hatched a plan to shut me down: Hagan would find his way to my line and purposely make sure I played poorly. How you may ask? He scored goals and made sure I couldn't get into the spotlight, what treachery! At the same time, he instilled hostilities between us and the Raiders, so we would be so pre-occupied with fighting each other, we'd forget about the rest of the league and they would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for this weird point task assuming everyone has a blood-thirsty rival . . . well I guess we all have Kelowna. Joke's on you guys though, we're in a playoff spot now, SUCK IT KNIGHTS.

I still suck.

I guess our rivals are Colorado now.

At least everybody hates Kelowna.

When Tabarnak Fleur De Lys LaPoutine thinks of rivals for his class, the Halifax Raiders must come to mind. Possessing the most rookies of any team, it is essentially the measuring pole for statistical success for this season. Rookies such as projected first round selection Lukas Muller, Cody Fletcher and Dwayne Wyder as well as fantastic prospects Bar Downski, Chuck Bernstein, Cloud McCarthy and Eric Pelletier and superstar Yuri Boyka Jr comprise a team with the bulk of their success in the near horizon. A vocal bunch, Fletcher has been known to verbal assault fellow Quebecois prospect Tabarnak Fleur De Lys LaPoutine viciously in the media and personal channels. This has led to a rivalry to prove not only what is being said is incorrect, but also that despite joining the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League late, that he belongs amongst the elite prospects of today. In his mind, this begins by thumping their rival, doing what he does best, smashing the fuck out of those pansy ass dangling playmakers and wannabe hippie snipers. The Rocket may have been a great sniper but he endeared himself to his people with his tenacity and grit, something that LaPoutine plans to show in spades, especially against the Raiders. So Halifax, watch out, otherwise you'll be surrendering much like the fortress of Louisbourg.

Few rivalries in the league can measure up to the intense rivalry of BC teams Kelowna and Vancouver. The first Battle of British Columbia is an intense matchup every season, for veterans and rookies alike. The crowd at Knights-Whalers games is on another level, and for the newer faces on the team, it can even be downright intimidating. Unfortunately for the rookies, there’s no room for fear or doubt when these two teams line up against one another. That proved true on June 16th when Kelowna and Vancouver met for the first time for the S35 season, a gruelling match ending in a 4-3 victory for the Whalers. Standout performances from big name players like Angelo Odjick and Janis Doro made the match one to be remembered, and even newcomers like Clint Eastwood and Isak Odegard shook of the rivalry night jitters and made an impact on the scoresheet. Through two periods the game was almost entirely back and forth, with goals 1, 3 and 4 bein scored by Kelowna’s Janis Doro and goals 2 and 5 coming from Vancouver’s Indresvara Magar and Sophia Bennett. The game was poised to be a close one until the third period onslaught from the Whalers began. Outshooting the Knights 13-3 through the final 20 minutes, and pocketing 2 quick goals, the latter of which was the game winning goal on the powerplay, Vancouver turned what was a close match into a massacre in their favour. After the admittedly emotional game, first year winger Nour Harrak chimed in, “We just needed to be a lot better out there at the end. We had the lead by one going into the 3rd and we let up on the gas which unfortunately cost us the victory. Its not a mistake anyone in this lockeroom plans on making twice.” As of the writing of this piece, the Knights hold a 3-2 edge in the season series over Vancouver, but with 2 games left, both teams know that the battle is far from over.

God Damn I'm late

Being apart of the Kelowna Knights, a big heated rivalry since as long as I can remember has been with those fucking fatties called the Vancouver Whalers. Our goalie: Sebastian Thompson posts accurate memes of them, and they give them right back with their own, inaccurate, memes. They've fought in loads of playoff series. There has been multiple battles, wars, and never seen before events. From puck drop, the game was on, big hits, left and right, big body checks, scrummages after every whistle, including some of the cleanest, most mature men and women on the ice. The fans show their enthusiasm with constant cheers and boos in unison. However the game didn't go in our direction. Although we worked our asses off every last second, those fucking skunks beat us 4-3. We took a 3-1 lead, and they got a goal to give them the momentum, they tied it early in the 3rd period. The game got very nasty, myself included. I threw a good ol' fashion hip check, laying someone's ass on the ground. Vancouver and Kelowna started knocking each other down left and right. After the whistles, punches behind the referees' back. At one point, Sophia Bennet got too close to the net, which Thompson swung his stick at him knocking him down. The game ended 4-3 Whalers, but as the sim showed, we got back at them. Fuck the Whalers

The Falcons team and their fans make for a hostile environment for the opposition and is a big reason why they have a multitude of rivals. Perhaps the biggest standout of the rivals is the team across the continent. The Detroit Falcons and the Vancouver Whalers have always known to hate each other. The GMs have gotten in multiple infamous brawls and the players hate each other with a passion. There's simply no better rivalry in the SMJHL, maybe even the entire SHL. The Falcons fans have been known to vandalize the Whalers team bus and even the poor hotel that accommodates the Vancouver team when it comes to visit Detroit. The fans in the past have pulled a fire alarm, thrown a rock through the window, and even started a contained fire. The new one has been driving their personal cars through the doors. It is literally impossible for the Whalers to rest up so it has been rumoured that they will try to fly in last minute from now on. They've even been willing to take a fine and a forfeit to avoid all the antics from the Falcons and their fans. They truly are one of a kind.

I have never been one for rivalries. My job has always been in hockey to go out and play my game, get better, do more, win. Here in Vancouver though? These people love their rivalry against Kelowna, and you know what? I love it too. We’ve now played them what, five times? And every time, it feels big. It feels like everyone in the crowd, everyone in the room, everyone in the city is waiting for a chance to get on the ice and contribute. They all want to play, show themselves, and when they can’t, the energy seeps into everything they do all day and night.
And then it erupts when the puck drops.

I am a simple guy, I like to play hockey, play air guitar, listen to my music and drink tea. But on Kelowna nights, the city seems to demand more of me. It asks me to stand up and fight, it asks me to not just get out and contribute, but to stand for something, to stand for them, to stand for Vancouver.

I am not a rivalry guy, but I am definitely a Vancouver Whaler, and Vancouver, well Vancouver needs their player on the ice.

I’m happy to be that guy.

I believe the biggest rivalry is my brother, Oliviz, he tells me after all zis that he is liking this Halifax place, it is far too warm there, on the plus side of zero often. How he can stand it iz beyond me, it is very much unlike my homeland, mother Russia, and very much not as cold as hometown, Omayakon.

I tell you this, when we meet, my job, it is defense. I am two way forward, but puck in net is priority always, and this time, it was not, I made sure Oliviz knew much that not score without me.

I watch at teammate, Jack Hansen, do very well, he teach me english better and we communicate well so he can breakout with puck, very talented defensemen who vill do very well in the SHL.

Unlikely my borther, his job he did not do, not score with fancy pants second line time.

And he did not, he did not and I did not, but that iz not my job right now. Is his. My job was done.

And he not get it done without older brothers help.

Oh and MR. Klozoff, what think you about coach put me at center so I can embarrass you at faceoffs.
