My team the St. Louis Scarecrows are performing well all around so far this season in the SMJHL. We started slow but once we found what worked for us we quickly zoomed up the standings to a first place lead. As of today we have a 22-7-1 record and currently have a 9 point lead on the next closest team while going 10-1 in our last 11 games. St. Louis is just clicking in all facets of our game right now. Part of St. Louis's success lies in the advanced stats as we currently sit 3rd in both penalty kill and power play percentage. In some other advanced stats we sit high up as well as we're currently 2nd or better in Shots For, Shots Against, Face-off percentage, and Hits Per Game. Clearly the Crows are on top of their game all over the ice and that has to be due to our incredible depth. The Scarecrows have 2 top lines essentially with stars all over the lineup and with an incredible rookie class their depth can't be matched. While most teams have to play rookies further up the lineup we get the benefit of matching our rookies against weaker lines while our stars dominate the stat sheet. Barring an unforeseen disaster the Crows shouldn't have to worry about making the playoffs but we will have to play at our hardest if we want to win the cup this year. It's any teams if they want it hard enough.

Over 30 games in and the Falcons are a middle of the road team with no sign of clawing higher in the standings. We're in 4th place, and 7 wins behind first but 6 wins ahead of last. We've got a good young team and the players are all pretty active, which bodes well for the rest of the season as attrition starts to affect other teams differently.
If you look a bit deeper at the stats, one of the interesting things is our goal differential. +7 isn't anything to write home about and won't stagger any of the teams at the top of the standings, but we have a stingy 77 goals allowed for second best in the league.
That shines the spotlight on our real problem -- goal scoring. 84 is 3rd worst in the league, 2nd worst if you don't include Halifax (which obviously none of us ever do). It may be too late to chase the top seed, but we can lock in a solid playoff spot if we can figure out our offensive struggles. Given diminishing returns on TPE, our gains (and our opponents' gains) are fastest early on, so things should converge as the season draws to an end and the rookies get a bare minimum of skills established.
Simply put, the Montreal Militia are clicking. The team currently sits in 3rd place with a record of 18-12-4, good for 40 points on the year.
The big strength for the Militia at this point has been their ability to score on the top line. With the chemistry between Walker, Steele and Lindstrom working like a machine, the Miltia have had no issues getting production from their top forward line.
The defense has been a positive point as well. Top defenseman Jack Hansen is enjoying a high production season and currently sits at 29 points in 34 games. While Turska and Alfredsson do not produce many points from the second line, both players are in the positive on the ice this season.
The goaltending has also been solid for Montreal. Both starter Thaddeus Prince and backup Coren Volden have enjoyed very good success this year.
Where the Militia need to improve is separating their goal differential for the season. Right now, the team has a goal differential of +6. This is a decent number, but teams behind Montreal in the standings are experiencing much better goal differentials which could ultimately prove costly for the Militia come playoff time.
One thing that the Militia have which often cannot be seen is chemistry. These players are always hanging out together off the ice and getting to know one another even better, and it has shown positive effects in the way they play on the ice.

The Vancouver Whalers have shown what it takes to stay strong through the regular season and make the playoffs; a never quit attitude. The Whalers have shown themselves to be one of the most resilient teams in the league. Take the team’s 4-0 loss to the Prince George Firebirds. While many might have been shaken by a resounding shutout, the Whalers got back on the ice the next day and skated hard, practicing board battle drills, and responded with two dominant shutout performances against the Raiders and the Scarecrows. More recently, the Whalers have been flying high, on a five game win-streak after three single point losses. When asked what has helped them respond so well throughout the season, rookie right winger Inari Twain told us, “We have a great team here, we believe in each other, and most importantly our coaches. We practice, we adjust, and we learn every day. We all want to win, play the game to the best of our ability, and part of that is simply showing up and listening.â€
The Whalers also have been tweaking their lines, shuffling their third and fourth line to great affect. When asked about this, Twain added, “It’s great, sure it’s great to ‘move up’ the lineup, but we don’t look at it like that. We go out there and play the way we can win. Coach wanted to create more playmaking on the lines and I think I bring that to my teammates. In the end, it’s still about how we all win. I’ll sit on the bench and sing Journey if that will help us win games.â€
Resiliance, and a don’t stop believing attitude, the Vancouver Whalers are facing the rest of the regular season with open arms.
After high expectations to start the season, Vancouver saw themselves in a skid early on and was finding itself on the wrong side of many one goal losses, especially against teams who are currently higher on the league table than the Whalers.
The hallmark of a good team isn't that they never lose, it's that they never give up. We took some time to regroup and figure out what we could do to improve our chances on the ice. We had players step up and fill gaps in the roster, and our leaders made sure that they were leading both on and off the ice. Players like Spitfire and Kikkoman really started to shine and bring the kind of quick and dirty hockey that you need to win in this league. Hoovs has been standing on his head and is about to put up one of the greatest seasons a goalie has seen in the SMJHL. We have played from the back end up, we've gone hard on the forecheck, and we've been finishing our checks. It's the little things that can pull you out of a hole early, and I think the team has focused on those little things, which in turn has led to more scoring opportunities and less panic in our own end.

With 34 games now in the books the Detroit Falcons find themselves in a good spot thus far into the season. With contributions up and down the line up and a hot goaltender and not just looks, the Falcons are in third in the standings. Now five wins over .500 and a record of 18-13-3 with a +10 goal differential, it's clear that both sides of the game have drastically improved from the start of the season. The coaching has done a tremendous job at adjusting and tweaking lineups and strategies, causing successful run. Detroit is tied for second with least amount of goals against. Which helps as they are fourth lowest at goals for. But the good news is that their goal production has definitely increased in the last few games. Players like Victorsson have stepped up and have produced the goal scoring that was lacking. In goal Marmeladov is third in save percentage with a .898 and second in goals against average with a 2.39. Falcons are flying high now and they are looking to create another win streak after a tough loss against the Vancouver Whalers. They face them three more times next, and though they are a tough team the Detroit Falcon players are ready to take on the best team in the league.

Coming into the season the consensus was that last year’s Championship run for the Detroit Falcons was more about smoke and mirrors than about a team on the rise. Most prognosticators felt that this season would be a year of adjustment. Gone were a large part of their veteran contingent and instead replaced with young inexperienced rookies. Many felt the Falcons would be a club on the outside of the playoff picture looking in.
Although only 34 games in, the Falcs are proving the naysayers wrong.
With 18 wins, 13 losses and 3 overtime defeats, Detroit currently find themselves sitting nicely in fourth place a mere point behind the Montreal Militia and their 40 points, and three points back of the Vancouver Whalers for second place in the SMJHL.
Unlike the dominance the top ranked St.Louis Scarecrows have shown at home with an impressive 12-4-1 record or the success the Militia have had on the road with the same record, Detroit has been consistent both at home and on the road. With a 9-8 home record, and a 9-5-3 away mark, the Falcons look to be doing just enough to keep themselves relevant.
A fourth place finish will be enough to take a trip to the dance, but should this club start to tilt the scales of success either on the road like Montreal or at home the way St.Louis has, the Detroit Falcons will once again be a club to be reckoned with.

Now this is a story all about how
The Raiders season flipped-turned upside down
Let Loco take a minute
Just sit right there
I'll tell you how we became the prince of a last place crown
In Nova Scotia is where we play
On the ice rink is where we spend most of our days
Chillin' out maxin' losin' real bad
And all shooting some shots wide like Oli K.
When a bunch of Mammoths who were doing real good
Got to play us eight times in my neighborhood
We took eight little losses and my Evok got scared
She said, "We're in last place right now but we'll be good one day."
I got whistled for a fight and so did Trucker
The ref's back said "Tim Tebow" and he had bribes on his back
If anything I could say that this guy was dumb
But I thought, "Well, this sucks."
– "They keep scoring on us."
I looked up to the scoreboard - 1 to 9
And I yelled to the ref, "Yo trash smell ya later."
I looked at our record
Oh man that shits bad
Now we sit on our throne as the Toilet Bowl Kings

I'd say that the Saint Louis Scarecrows have had some great team play. It's a great locker room and we all know our strengths and weaknesses. That way when we play we improve on them. Everyone knows their role and they play it well. I'd say the best team player on this awesome team is Teddy Cuddles. This right winger by trade selflessly moved to center once we signed him so first line center Brett Kennedy wouldn't be double shifted anymore. That's the epitome of a team player. Kennedy himself is a team player, centering me and Finn Jakobsen on said fourth line after our GM Joe Kortesi took Marcus Nyquist, our original center, out of the lineup. (At the time of this printing, Nyquist and fellow rookie Connor O'Connor have been released by the team.) One of the best things I think this team does well in under the team play category is passing. We make sure everyone has a good chance to shoot and get some points. There is also good chemistry between the lines, which is good because everyone needs to get in order for the team to be successful. All in all, I think our team play is awesome.

Ace SHL GM
Chief Chicken Officer
The Scarecrows season started off with a bang as we were one of the three teams that were neck and neck at the top of the league. After the initial crowd settled, the Scarecrows were securely at the top of the league and were sitting pretty. Management thought with the team staying where it was, why not add another lethal offensive piece in Langabeer Jr., the captain of the Kelowna Knights, for a deep playoff run. At the time I had to agree, but now that we’ve seen the results since that trade, perhaps it wasn’t so wise.
Since the St. Louis Scarecrows acquired Langabeer Jr., they’ve been in a bit of a freefall, losing to bottom feeders and fellow contenders alike. It’s allowed the teams below the Scarecrows to have a bit of a resurgence. It now falls to the leadership and management staff to get the Scarecrows back on track. Going into the playoffs on a cold-streak is not optimal and can certainly lead to a quick death in the grueling SMJHL playoffs. The Scarecrows remain confident, however. This is the same team that dominated in the first half of the season, and it is very likely they get in their groove again soon.
RIP Dangel. See you on the other side, brother
