Carrick Murray is, without a doubt, the current top pick for the Raymond Lindsay. Murray has led the Vancouver Whalers to an electrifying rise to the top of the league. He currently leads the league with a .916 Save Percentage, the lowest Goals Against Average at 1.99, the most Shutouts (6) and wins (25). Nevermind that the he leads in all of those categories by a hefty margin, 5 more wins, 2 more shutouts, .42 less goals against and .012 higher save percentage.
Carrick Murray is no slouch.
You wanted to hear about other players? Don’t waste your time. Carrick Murray is backstopping an elite Whalers team, giving them a chance every night to go out and play their game. Murray’s presence in the 159th game of the season against the Montreal Militia gave the team the capacity to crawl back after going down 3-1 quickly in the first period. Murray held the fort down against a Detroit Falcons onslaught in game 136 during the second, giving the Whalers the confidence to take a 3-3 game at the end of the second into a third period slaughter.
MVPs are great not only for their play on the ice, but how they inspire others to play. Every time Murray creates opportunity for his team, they respond. The Vancouver Whalers aren’t wasting Carrick Murray’s talents, because they realize the MVP he is, and they respond accordingly.
Other players? Get out. Give Carrick Murray the Raymond Lindsay.

My MVP Candidates

1 Crossfit Jesus (STL) X 41 22 20 42
3 Finn Krüger (COL) X 41 14 26 40 (45 SB; 21 HIT)
4 Shoyu Kikkoman (VAN) X 42 12 27 39 (37 SB; 78 HIT)

My Three Candidates for the Raymond Lindsay. The most coveted individual award in the league are forward Crossfit Jesus from the St.Louis Scarecrows, Defenseman Finn Kruger from the Colorado Mammoths and Defenseman Shoyu Kikkoman from the Vancouver Whalers. These three candidates are number one, three and four in overall league scoring. Crossfit Jesus has been a beast this season recording a league leading 42 points in 41 games thus far. He has also scored 22 goals which is the most in the league by three. He is an elite offensive talent in the SMJHL. Next up would be Defenseman Finn Krüger from Colorado. He is putting up elite offensive number while being a defenseman and also playing really well defensively with 45 shot blocks and 21 hits. Krüger does it all on the ice making him a valuable player. Lastly defenseman Shoyu Kikkoman from the Whalers is also putting up excellent offensive numbers for the Whalers, although not as good as Kruger but close, while also being a rock defensively. He has a large lead in hits on Kruger, but Kruger has more shots blocked. One could argue Kikkoman has been more impressive this season than Kruger based on the defensive ability he has shown.

As we come to the close of the 35th SMJHL season, it’s time to start thinking about playoffs and season awards. While there are many awards to be handed out, there’s one that truly stands above the rest. Nearly every player wants to win the Most Valuable Player Award, putting their names into a small class of individuals that stand above the rest of their colleagues, even if it is just for one year. While the MVP Award typically goes to one of the points leaders, we’ll look at a couple noteworthy names that may find themselves getting a new piece of hardware:

Points Leaders: Crossfit Jesus and Matthew Auston Scarecrows
As tradition, points leaders always seem to have a shoe in for MVP. And this year the St. Louis Scarecrows seem to have two feet firmly planted within the circle of contention. For the second year in a row, line mates Matthew Auston and Crossfit Jesus have played exceptionally well- both are tied for first in overall points (42), while Jesus tops the Score tally (22) and Auston tops the Assists column (28). They’ve been the engine driving St. Louis all season, and don’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. If history repeats itself, and St. Louis once again fails to capture the cup, these two boys are for sure not going home empty handed.

Most Active: Cody Fletcher raiders
I can here it already, “What’s that? A rookie for MVP? That’s preposterous!”. And to a certain extent, I agree. Cody Fletcher may not be a household name, or even a recognized name outside of Halifax, but the fact of the matter is that Cody since day one has contributed to the SMJHL in many ways. Fletcher is the 7th highest rookie in terms of points, and has been one of very few players to enrol into the SMJHL Internship, helping not only the club, but also the league itself. Rumors also have it that Fletcher’s also active in Halifax’s front office, being one of the names thrown into perhaps filling a co-GM or Assistant GM role. Though it would be an unusual pick for MVP, it may be justified all that Cody has done this year.

Total Rebrander: Nour Harrak Knights
“WHAAAAAAT?! ANOTHER ROOKIE C’MON MAN”. Don’t worry, this one is incredibly unlikely. However it cannot be overstated how much the new Adidas rebrand has done for the SMJHL. Teams have gone from looking like shit to be hits with the new jerseys and logos. And none of that would’ve happened without rookie Nour Harrak . Again, is that enough to win MVP? No, most likely not, being able to convince Adidas to help a small league out is no small feat.

There should only be one candidate for MVP and he's a real monster. Crossfit Jesus has been tearing up the SMJHL since he was a rookie. This season has been more of the same. He often says that this season "I only came back to win the cup." Even though the Scarecrows have had their ups and downs and that Jesus is now assistant captain (Louie Garrett is now captain), he's tied for the most points on the team with 42 with Matthew Auston. He leads the Crows in goals (20) and plus/minus (+20) as well. Jesus also averages a point per game. Many people think that Crossfit Jesus deserves the MVP award, including myself, for many reasons, one of which being the fact that he's a great teammate and motivator. Other reasons include that he's a hard worker who trains hard and often, he's a talented player who is a great scorer and defender, and that he has a clean public image. Crossfit is known off the ice as a charitable guy who runs the Crossfit Jesus Foundation and is known to spend time with his teammates. All in all, Crossfit Jesus is a great player who deserves to win the MVP award for this season.

There are only 3 choices that could possibly be the league MVP for me. The first choice would be Crossfit Jesus. Crossfit has been an excellent leader in the St. Louis locker room helping the rookies when he can. Not only that but he's tied for not only the team lead but also the lead league in scoring while also leading the league in goals. Crossfit has been able to do all of this while only taking 2 penalty minutes the entire season while playing over 20 minutes a game.

My second choice for league MVP is Matthew Auston. Auston is currently tied for the league lead in scoring with fellow teammate Crossfit Jesus. He's done this by posting an insane 28 assists which is good for the league lead. Auston has been feeding Crossfit all season and the pair are both spectacular at helping the Crows win games. Auston in his own right has also only taken 4 penalty minutes all season while playing over 20 minutes a game. Both he and Crossfit help the team immensely while not harming the team.

The third choice for league MVP is Angelo Odjick of Vancouver. Angelo leads the team in scoring and is 5th in the league in scoring while leading the Whalers to being currently in first in the standings. Angelo knows how to win and lead a team on massive win streaks. Angelo is also one of the highest in the league in +/- with a +21 and is one of the highest hitters among the top 10 in points scored in the league.

Decision time is almost upon us. With the SMJHL regular season on its way to completion, here’s a quick look at who might win the s36 Raymond Lindsay Trophy for league MVP.

Who’s in the mix: Matthew Auston (STL), Finn Krüger (COL), Crossfit Jesus (STL), Angelo Odjick (VAN), Dani Forsberg (PGF), Shoyu Kikkoman (VAN)

Heading into the final stretch of the season, many have pegged this as a two-horse race between Jesus and Auston. One; the prolific goal scorer, the other; the creative playmaker. Both outstanding in their own right, but in the end who will it be?

Probably Auston.

But who should it be…

There’s been some fantastic individual performances by D-men, but none better than that of Colorado Mammoth’s Krüger who despite playing each night against the opposition’s best forwards has been able to keep pace in the scoring race with the likes of the aforementioned Auston.

With 15 lamp-lighters from the back end, Krugers’ goal total is equal to that of Auston. The biggest difference is just how few shots it’s taken to get them. While St.Louis’ scoring dynamo has fired 167 shots on goal to land himself his 15 tallies, for Kruger it’s taken just 76.

To give an idea of the shooting percentage between both, Auston is firing at an 8.98% clip, while Colorado’s beast on the backend is hitting at a 19.74% success rate. Based on shooting efficiency alone, Auston would be last of the six candidates listed.

But we digress, as is often the case the league’s most valuable player award typically goes to the player with the most stats at season’s end. It’s because of this that it would seem unlikely Kruger gets the nod.

Sad but true.

Finn Krüger… You get our vote!

Here would be my early prediction for the league MVP trophy, the Raymond Lindsay.

The first candidate is a forward playing for the Saint-Louis Scarecrows. With more than a point per game, Matthew Auston is currently leading the league with 15 goals and 30 assists for a total of 45 points. He’s also a really strong presence on the ice and having +22 in the +/- differential. He’s also a really disciplined player, only having receive 4 minutes in the sin bin.

The second candidate is the Vancouver Whalers starting goaltender. He’s currently sitting with 5 wins more than any other goaltender; Carrick Murray is a wall. He has a save percentage of 0.913 and a goal against average of 2.03. He faced a total of 887 shots this season and was outplayed only 77 times. During his 39 matches played, he managed to stay perfect in six of them.

The last nominee is a defenseman playing for the Colorado Mammoths. He was a juggernaut for his team by playing by average 22 minutes a night. Finn Krüger also posted more than a point per game this season, with a current total of 44 in 43 matches. In those points, 15 were goals and 29 were assists. He spent a total of half a game into the penalty box so far, this season. He blocked a total of 49 shots with his body.

It's easy to look at the score sheet and think that someone like Matthew Auston or Crossfit Jesus should get the MVP title. They'll headline many a ballot, and will surely secure many a vote as well. I can't think of anyone who, upon hearing that one of the league's top 3 scorers, would balk at such a decision. And both of the Scarecrows stars can tick that box, sitting at #1 and #3 in SMJHL scoring, respectively.

You could even say the same for Angelo Odjick, who's put up a fantastic season for the Vancouver Whalers as well. Odjick sits at 4th in league scoring at present, and has a tidy 41 points in 44 games.

Many, however, look for the MVP to bring more than a prime slot on the leaderboard. An MVP is the most valuable player, and some hold the belief that such an honor should only be bestowed upon players whose teams' success would entirely evaporate without them. For this reason, we have to give our vote to Finn Krüger , Colorado Mammoths Defenseman. Despite the gargantuan seasons of the three aforementioned players, Krüger is second in scoring as a defenseman. While Auston and Jesus are playing on a Scarecrows team that's already clinched a playoff spot, Krüger's Mammoths are clawing to stay at the middle of the pack. Odjick's Whalers are currently top seeded, but the Whalers are a team of such caliber that their depth could fill in missing production. At least more so than the Mammoths, who would clearly be having a far worse season without Krüger, making him our vote for MVP.

Let me begin by saying I’m a fan of the underdogs, and this is 100% filtered through homer goggles. That being said, let’s fackin’ go.

1. Cody Fletcher may not lead his team in points. Or assists. Or goals. Or really anything except short-handed goals, but the kid is phenomenal. His grit/60 is off the charts. He can chirp with the best of them, and is constantly pestering the other players on the ice. His stats also include a fight, 37.35% face-off percentage (as a winger), and two game winning goals. Many predict Cody will go extremely early in the draft this upcoming season.

2. Yuri Boyka Jr. leads his team in pretty much every positive aspect. Spending 13 more minutes on ice than the next leading player, Yuri averages 22.69 minutes per game. Scoring .67 points per 20, Yuri has put up 34 points so far this season. Leading a team that can’t seem to catch a break this season, Yuri’s production is not in question here. With a team comprised of mostly rookies, next season we expect big things out of Yuri, and this season, we think he can vie for the MVP.

3. Lukas Müller. Enough said.

Dani forsberg, carrick murray and crossfit jesus should all be considered for the mvp reward after this season. these 3 players have had really good stats all season and are a step above the other players in s35. Forsberg is only 2 hits behind the best in the league and is still getting great points at 45 so far this season. With his hits and points he would be a great choice. Crossfit has had his best season so far and is tied with forsberg at 45 points on the season. jesus doesn't have the same sort of hit totals, but he has had an outstanding season. Murray is a goalie so its hard to compare him to crossfit and dani but he is playing really good. probably one of the best seasons by any goalie in a long time in the smjhl. carrick has the highest save percentage the lowest goals against average and the most wins and the most shutouts. its really hard to compare that to getting 45 points or 130 checks but murray is better than all the other goalies in the smjhl this year and maybe for many years so i believe he should be the mvp. he also helped his team more than the others because he is getting shutout wins so he is stealing games and making his team win.

When it comes to MVP, there are a plethora of things you look for from a myriad of poutine positions. When I tabarnak think about MVPs, fleur-de-lys is about how they represent themselves and show off who they are for their team. When you witness SMJHL Greats from Michael Abdalla, to Saku Perhonen, Elias Armia, Sam Steele, Sergey Kovalenko, Zach Miller, Saoul Commeunebotte, Tuomas Vitikka, Franz Vranitzky, Brandon Pomery, James Adkins and Tabarnak Fleur De Lys Lapoutine. So when I look at character and what these players brought to their teams I understand what it is I'm looking for an MVP. It's not individual stats or team standings. It's mostly incredible personality. So my candidates are as follows:

Nour Harrak - Kelowna Knights

Nour Harrak has been a meme legend this season. His personality is golden and he's one of our favourites in the league. We love Nour!

Cody Fletcher - raiders

Evok is a wonderful person and has proven it by being given the Intern position this season. She's also a habs fan so we love her! Go Evok!

Last but not least, Roman Augustus of the St. Louis Scarecrows.

A wonderful addition, look for TDZ to take the league by storm and show us how awesome he really is. GO TDZ!

“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. ... There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.”
