S38 PT 2 - Looking Forward
#16

Being born in Canada, there is no shortage of snipers for Ryan Gardiner to look to model his game after. But there is really only one obvious choice for a rising star like left wing sniper Ryan Gardiner to look up to. That man's name? The two way forward center from Nuuk, Greenland, Tigole Bitties of the Edmonton Blizzard. While the two may not sound so similar at all in player type, several similarities can actually be drawn between the two.

While much more defensively sound than Ryan Gardiner, they do share some strengths. Both players look to priotize strong control of the puck, and nipping sick and amazing goals. Tigole Bitties boasts a 91 scoring and 90 puck handling, with a young Ryan Gardiner trying to slowly build his way up to similar stats at 71 scoring and 62 puck handling. Also, both maintain a good gap of 20 and 17 respectively between their scoring and passing to ensure a shoot first play style. Ryan Gardiner also looks to improve on his defense over the course of his career. Aside from their attributes, both are similar in height and weight, Ryan Gardiner stands at a height of 6'2 and weighs 205 pounds. Tigole Bitties is only an inch taller and just 4 pounds heavier.

As mention in my previous entry, I have been very close with West Kendall Platoon winger, Ales Smirnov. I was fortunate enough to meet Smirnov during a team Russia practice. Smirnov has been a great mentor for me, and I know he will continue to help me throughout my career.

With that being said, one player that I am looking to learn from Is Klaus Wagner, the West Kendall defender. Klaus is getting older now, but still playing at a very competitive level. Klaus has always been an efficient skater, with skating ranking at 90 overall on the finesse index.
Another key attribute for Klaus is his passing, where he scored 94 on the accuracy scale. Currently my passing only ranks at a 72, and I will need to take great strides in this area, to be an elite defender. My skating is even worse, coming in at a 70. If I am able to improve these areas of my game during junior, I should have a large advantage when I enter the SHL.
I am hoping to work with Klaus in the off seasons, this will allow me optimal time to improve my skating, passing, and other weaknesses currently in my game.

People often ask me who influences me in my style. I try and be my own man as best as possible but there are naturally those who catch the eye. I love watching the Buffalo Stampede play, in particular Viktor Vorkämpfer. Like me, he is a pass first kind of centre who always tries to get possession of the puck from faceoffs. People will point to his scoring only being 63 but his 90 in passing skill coupled with his 90 defence means that he is reliable in both zones.

Whilst my career hasn’t made the most electric of starts, I know if I work on my games in the same way that Viktor has, I will be a valuable member of any organisation. 23 points last campaign won’t be troubling the top of the charts, this is true but no-one can deny the effect that Viktor has on the ice. I am hoping that next year with the Raiders, I can begin to show that in my game rather than the dismal performances I have shown so far. I have heard stories of Victor staying after practice and leaving a single lego brick 100ft away and trying to pass directly to it, I have started doing this too. Let’s see if it pays off!

As a goalie, there are not too many players I can look up to, cause every team only has one starter. One guy that immediately stood out to me was goalie Olli O'Koivu from the Minnesota Chiefs.

He immediately stood out as an incredibly active goalie who has done similar things to what I want to do with my player.

My first instinct was to have my highest attributes be Style Control, Hand Speed and Reaction Time. Similarly, O'Koivu has all three of those as strengths also and has them at 99, while I have mine at 80 for now.

Rebound Control and Agility are things I also want to work on and he has them at 95, while mine are a bit lower for now, in the mid 70s. I do want to improve them further in the next few seasons though.

I think ultimately it will take a lot of time to work up to being as good as him, he is obviously one of the top goalies in the league, but I know I can do my best to get there one day. I want to focus especially on those five attributes that I mentioned and I think that will build an incredible goalie for a Juniors team and later a team in the SHL.

As a growing young offensive forward, there are many players in the SHL to look up to and look to build like. Great offensive players are an abundance in the SHL, but its about the ones who stand out from the crowd. As a offensive winger, I'm looking to build my player like Noro Wozy. Last season, Wozy was one of the best left wingers in the SHL last year accruing 46 points in 50 games. With his 90+ passing, scoring, puck handling, and skating he creates a lot of chances for himself and his teammates. I am also aiming to get better on defense and be similar to Noro's 90 defense which allows him to play many important minutes for the Hamilton Steelhawks in close games. Noro is one of the best offensive weapons in the SHL and going forward I hope to really emulate his offensive style and his ability to score and assist his teammates while entertaining the fans with great skating and puck handling. On top of all this, Wozy has still a lot of room to grow as a player and I will continue watch his growth and hope to replicate it. Who knows maybe someday we might get to play on the same line in the SHL.

I admire many players in the SHL, and not just at my own position. However, I would like to say that Manhattan Rage Goaltender Jason Aittokallio is one of those players. The Manhattan Rage have always been one of my favorite teams in the SHL, but that's only one thing that stands out to me about him. His style of game is really what appeals to me and what I try to model myself off of. I'm working at getting my Rebound Control (74), Style Control (74), Hand Speed (74), and Reaction Time (74) up to his levels (95, 99, 99 and 99 respectively) though I obviously still have quite a ways to go. Throughout his entire career he has only won less than 20 games once in the SHL. That's really the level of consistency I would like to strive for. Although in order to do so, I have to maintain my levels of commitment to improving and getting better, which should be absolutely no problem. I strive to be the best and prove I belong in such a league as the SHL. I have a great opportunity here to become like Aittokallio or really any of the other steadfast goaltenders currently in the SHL. I want to be good enough to become the guy for any team who'll have me.

Becoming a Non-drafted SMJHL Rookie there aren't really much expectations for a kid just out of high school with no college degree. But I, Geoff Higgins, don't compare myself to anyone here in this league. I truly wish to be the best. I don't want to come up to the SHL looking like someone else. I don't want to be put onside of someone in the stat column and here analysts distinguish what I need to do to be like, Liam Kinsler or Chris McZehrl. I wan't to be the first Geoff Higgins. I want people to look at my career not in a shadow of someone else but I want to be looked up too, not me looking up to someone else.

Playing in a minor hockey league I was told that I could be the next Elias Armia. But I told that person to get out of my face because being someone else is not the goal I have in mind and it never was. Like previously stated I want to be the greatest, the biggest cliche in the league of anything but I truly believe that it is possible for me to outweigh the legends and become something no one has ever seen before. My Puckhandling and Passing will outweigh anyone in this league.

Emulation

Karsten Kadinger wants to be his own player, plain and simple -- but that doesn’t mean he isn’t drawing inspiration from other players. At first glance, the obvious names would be Nikolaus Scholz or one of the McZehrl’s: high profile, high-offense German superstars. But of late, Kadinger has been quoted as drawing inspiration from another player entirely: one of Ireland’s biggest names over the past two decades… none other than Pedro Sarantez, the high-scoring winger that Kadinger was first introduced to through watching the Edmonton Blizzard, as the line of Kane-Scholz-Sarantez lit up the season and broke records (soon to be broken in turn by the aforementioned McZehrl).

With 360 goals in his first 19 seasons, Sarantez has been absolutely prolific. While he’s slowed down considerably, he’s already added 3 goals and is on pace for a respectable 15 goals this season, meaning he would cap off his career with yet another solid outing. Certainly, Sarantez has been on the decline since his 69-point season in S33, but he remained a very solid presence for the Admirals and Rage respectively. Kadinger may only have one goal so far in his young SMJHL career, suffering through the early-career slumps many similar players have (indeed, Sarantez only notched 16 points in his rookie season), but there’s no doubt that offense is one of his key focuses. He may be more interested in defense than Sarantez, but there are similarities to note between them -- some intentional on Kadinger’s part.

First and foremost, both players have made their careers off of scoring. Granted, Sarantez has more of a career to show for it, but that goes without saying. Both men possess deadly wrist-shots and the ability to sneak their way into scoring avenues. Likewise, both Sarantez and Kadinger place a lesser emphasis on passing, but retain strong puck-handling abilities. The biggest point of difference between them is where Kadinger seems focused on a two-way style of play, Sarantez is a little more reckless in his own end, but has the kind of natural skating ability Kadinger could only dream of. So -- they’re different players, but the inspiration is obvious, and Kadinger can only hope to achieve a fraction of Sarantez’ personal success.

Having lived my early life in Halifax and watching the Raiders inaugural seasons, I had the pleasure of seeing Clayton Fuller pull on the uniform. Winning the team award for best defensemen three years in a row, he was a leader of those early teams, and as a young kid I saw him as one of my heroes and his play inspired me to become a defenseman. I remember having the privilege of meeting him around the rink a few times back then and he was really a great guy, always will to chat with a little kid like me, and it meant a lot at the time.

Now a days I look at Irish defensemen Roman Augustus as someone that I kind of model my play after. I don’t quite have the size he has but I think we still have a similar style of play. I've been watching him play for Ireland for a bit now and hopefully some day I'll be able to join him. His strong two-way ability is something I admire, the kind of guy who can play in any situation and thrive. Someone who does all the little things right, and that’s what I hope to be for the Raiders, and eventually the SHL team that drafts me.

Being a young goalie there is far from a shortage of players to look up to in the SHL. My brother played on the same Hamilton Steelhawks team as the great Jakub Tanner, one of the finest goaltenders to ever grace the SHL ice and I remember meeting him as a young kid and getting some words of encouragement and signed gear. However, the one goaltender I base my game on the most would be the Manhattan Rage's Jason Aittokallio. Technically, Jason and myself use similar goaltending styles, both of us favouring strong Hand Speed, Reaction Time and Style Control as the best way to make a save. Jason was a legend in his time in the SMJHL, being drafted first overall by the Kelowna Knights in the S30 SMJHL Draft and going on to lead the Knights to a Four Star Cup in his first season with the team, and although my time in the SMJHL hasn't been quite as smooth a beginning, I found myself watching old game tapes of Jason when he was knew to the league to get some inspiration. I honestly don't think I possess the natural reflexes and inherited talent Jason does but I think we go about things in a similar way and that's something that has give me real inspiration!

The Montreal Militia start the season off with a tough schedule highlighted by top tier SMJHL teams. They have struggled early, but have flashes of great hockey at times. The hard working front office has been grinding their gears, trying different combinations in practice to put the most competitive team on the ice that they can. This resulted as Patrick Brumm Jr. moving all the way up to the top pairing despite being a rookie. Brumm Jr’s at defense of rating 74 hasn’t seemed to be a huge cog on the first pairing. The real glaring issue is his skating that has let him be exposed by a few fast breaks thus far.

Looking forward Montreal is working with Brumm Jr. to improve his skating rating of 60 so he can help limit fast breaks, and be more effective in the large role the Militia have thrown him into. Look for Montreal to make a mid to late season surge towards the 4 star cup. As the youngsters gain familiarity with the system in place in Montreal we should see the team start to surge in the stats and become a real contender. This will inturn get them coveted 4 star cup they fell so short of last season.

In a league where there is only one goalie per team, it’s super important to look at which goalie I would like to look up to, or reference when I’m doing my own training. One goalie has stuck out to me though, and their name is Ekaterina Rudnikova. The biggest reason I know about Rudnikova is because that is the goalie that plays where Tor plays. Another left handed goalie like myself, this player is one that I would love to be able to look up to as my season goes on. Just watching the hand speed and reaction time to pucks coming flying at the net, and the ability to eat the goal up with her size is crazy. The way they command the switching of her style because she is a hybrid goalie is astonishing to me. I hope to one day be able to mimic and control myself in such a fashion like she does in goal. The finesse she has there is unmatched by many others, and hopefully one day I can see myself in the big leagues doing what she can do in the net. I will say, the biggest difference between us though is our size, I stand at 6’7 while she is only 5’10.
