S38 PT 2 - Looking Forward
#31

It’s been a rough start to the season for Colorado Mammoth center, Doc DiGreasi. It’s been 11 games and DiGreasi has been held off the scoresheet completely. His only stats show a -7 +/-, tied for the worst on the team, and 11 shots on goal. The rookie isn’t seeing much ice time, only 9.09 minutes per game, the lowest of any Colorado forward. DiGreasi has said that this isn’t the start that he envisioned but he is willing to put in the extra effort to get his game on track. Having watched most of his games it’s easy to see what he needs to work on. DiGreasi has below average skating, scoring, and puck handling for the SMJHL and it needs to be worked on. DeGreasi was touted to be a more defensive-minded Geronimo Otto, who currently leads all SHL forwards in assists in 11 games played. The German superstar has been a model that DiGreasi wants to follow, with his strengths being having passing, skating, and puck handling all over 90. As the season goes on the Mammoth will look towards DiGreasi to fill out into a solid bottom 6 player to help support their top six stars, Nico Gross, who leads the team with 11 points in 11 games, and Dean Youngblood, who has 9 points in 11 games.

I remember as a kid my dad was always trying to get me into watching SHL games. Not that I needed the push, I was instantly hooked. I still remember sitting and watching my dad play, then after he retired we would still sit and wath together, but it meant even more at that point.

As a kid I just wanted to be my dad. He'd ask who my favorite player was or who I'd most like to watch. Of course my answer would always be him. But now that we're sitting there together we can actually talk about each and every player. And now that I'm looking to be drafted by these clubs he'll ask things like: who do you think your play style most resembles? Who do you emulate currently playing?

This question should be harder, but I know without missing a beat: Nicolas Winter of the Los Angeles Panthers. We're both incredibly pass first (His 99 PA is his highest stat, likewise my 76 PA is my highest stat). Similarly we both try to handle the puck very well (his 95 PH is tied for his second highest stat and my 67 PH is my second highest stat). Finally we both are not very hard hitters (he's only at 64 CK while I'm still at 40). When I think of players I see myself modeling my playstyle after, Winter is the obvious candidate.

The captain of the Minnesota Chiefs Alonzo Garbonzo is an elite play maker and dominant force in the SHL. With 90+ ratings in skating (98), Strength (90), Endurance (90), puck handling (90), scoring (90), and a remarkable 99 rating in passing, this guy is a threat in every offensive facet in the game. He has 15 assists through 14 games this season he is very well known for putting the puck where his line mates can put it home. Just because he is knows or his passing skills doesn't mean he cant shoot the puck, his 90 rating in scoring forces teams to stay honest and not cheat to the pass, because the second the goalie bites pass he puts the puck behind you. However it's not just his play in the O zone that is terrifying, hes also one of the best shutdown forwards in the game with a 99 rating on defense. Garbonzo is the definition of 2-way forward and that's what I want to do. I strive to be the best i can on both sides of the puck by improving my offensive stats but also committing to my defensive game I hope one day i can make as big of an impact in the SHL as Alonzo has, he is truly a generational player that every team has to plan for.

The player I look up to, as a center, is Tigole Bitties. While I may be a more defensively oriented player, his work ethic is something that anyone should aspire to. His sniping ability is truly something to behold, and while I don’t think that I’ll ever have a shot as good as his, I hope that people will look at my defensive play the same way as his offensive play.

Being an impact player as a rookie is crazy for any SHLer, and the fact that he’s going to keep getting even better is even more amazing. His elite skating (90) is something that I hope to emulate one day, my skating (71) is my second best attribute right now. His ability to keep the puck is also great as well (90). Although my puck handling is nowhere near that (59) it used to be much lower until my last update, and I hope to keep raising it, along with my face offs, which are much lower than I’d like (50). Winning draws is an important thing for defensive centers to be able to do, so as long as I keep updating that and my defense (75), my highest attribute, I think I figure to become an elite two way player in the SMJHL for now, and hopefully in the SHL in the future.

Konstantin Kostoyevskiy has always looked up to SHL great Zach Evans. He's currently one of the strongest forwards in the league, with a good taste in scoring ability. Konstantin is currently hoping he can replicate and possibly exceed the standards Zach has reached over his career.

Zach Evans is strong in almost every attribute, most notably his scoring. He has maxed out his scoring strength, with a big 99. Konstantin is currently at 72, and plans to bring it up to Zach's level. He hopes that his scoring will be his main trick, with some playmaking skill up his sleeve.

Evans' other strengths include puck handling and skating. They are both currently at a 92, which is elite. Konstantin may not be strong in puck handling, with it only being at 63, but he will try to get it to 90. He does want his skating to reach higher numbers to stay competitive even if he regresses later on in his career.

Konstantin hopes to exceed Zach's passing ability as well. Zach's passing is only at a 90, and Konstantin wants his to reach 99. He's already at 70, so the road there is less than most of his rookie class. Zach stands out because of his great strengths, and maybe someday Konstantin will too.

One day, Jake Forke aspires to be as great as legendary Buffalo Stampede defenseman Alexis Metzler

With stats including a staggering 99 in passing (pretty much as good as can be measured) and 90 in scoring, the veteran dominated the blue line for many seasons. Even with such silky mitts, Metzler's defensive game was never neglected, nor was his endurance, allowing him to easily swallow big minutes in critical games. In fact, he is an incredibly well-rounded player, in every category, all over the ice.

Meanwhile, Forke is working hard to match such a legend. Currently, his strength is in his scoring shot, measuring at about 71, although he's always pushing to improve. Just like his idol he's focusing heavily on his passing game, (64) although he knows he has a long way to go. In terms of pure defense, Jake has allowed his offensive game to take precedence to some degree, although discussions with the Detroit Falcons coaching staff have left him determined to improve in that regard. Personally, although his team is top of the table in this early stage of the season, he is unhappy that he is recording a team-low +/- (although he acknowledges that it’s a pretty meaningless statistic anyway).

For now, Jake Forke continues to hone his craft in the minor leagues, working his hardest to make himself an attractive prospect both in the SHL and at the international level too.

Edited because I may have misread the guidelines. Now the veteran player is still active.

Looking up to his idol and trying to recreate their style of play as always been something Anders Christiansen liked to do. Now that he has started playing in the SMJHL, Christiansen is looking to recreate the way some of the players in the SHL play to achieve his dream of reaching the best hockey league in the world.

Christiansen always wanted to be a center that you can count on in both the offensive and defensive side of the game. There is a bunch of players in the SHL that play this style of game and one of the players that Anders Christiansen try to look up to inspire the way he plays is Sven Karlsson of the Texas Renegades. With this in mind, Christiansen will need to work on specific skills to reach Sven Karlsson high level of play. Playing an elite two-way game means to be good defensively, Karlsson has a DF ranking of 93 compared to 63 for Christiansen. The most important offensive skills to put up points on the board are both scoring and passing. Christiansen has a SC of 61 and Karlsson is 82. PA rating is 93 for Karlsson and 64 for Christiansen. As you can see, there are still a lot of workouts need for Christiansen to believe that he can reach the same level of play as Karlsson. Finally, a good two-way center needs to be a good faceoff taker. Again, Christiansen lack Karlsson with a high margin here because he has a FO ranking of 61 compared to 90 for the player he is trying to recreate.

Written option: Must include 200 words and some reference to build attributes and/or stats of both yourself and at least one player currently in the SHL.

My player, Yannick Berger, is trying to emulate San Francisco Pride’s Geronimo Otto. Otto is a passing focused center, just like Yannick aspires to be. Otto has a passing stat of 91, which has been Berger’s main focus so far in the SMJHL. Otto’s points primarily come from assists as well, as he has 5 goals, 13 assists, and a total of 18 points. Yannick currently has a passing stat of 70, which is his highest stat right now. The focus on passing hasn’t sent his assists soaring past his goals, as he currently has 4 goals and 4 assists. He has a total of 8 points for the Raiders and is the 3rd leading scorer of the team. Geronimo Otto is tied for the top scorer of the Pride, where he and Isaac Kaiser both have the same exact goals, assists, and total points. Berger hopes to be like these fine players for the Pride, hopefully helping his team do great things by feeding the guys who can make the magic happen. If you can’t get the puck to the scorers you won’t have as many opportunities to score, so having a good, passing focused center who can open up options and allow his teammates to take shots they may not have had, and that’s exactly what Yannick is trying to do in the SMJHL and eventually the SHL. Ever since Viktor Kolesnikovs witnessed Jasper Clayton’s rocket of a goal in Game 6 of the 33rd annual SHL finals, he has idolized him and wanted to mimic his play after Clayton’s. While his goal scoring abilities may not be on par with that of Claytons, Kolesnikovs wants to focus on his defensive game as well as his passing and playmaking abilities as a two way defenseman. Viktor has been extremely grateful to be drafted by the Detroit Falcons, former home of his idol Clayton, who was also drafted 8th overall by Detroit. While Viktor was taken in the late rounds of the draft, he hopes that he can still pave his way to a successful SHL career like Clayton did, while working in the Falcons system. Currently, Jasper Clayton is tied for the team lead on the Wolf Pack at 19 points on the season. Kolesnikovs is hoping to emulate that sort of play in just a few short seasons.
Kolesnikovs has had a solid but quiet start to his inaugural season. In 16 games he has posted a mere 3 assists with no goals. On the bright side, he has 17 shots blocked, second most for the Falcons, and a plus/minus of positive 3. While he is still searching for his first goal, Viktor is not too worried. “When it comes It comes. No time for panic, just have to keep training hard and work like father always taught me”. As the season progresses on and Viktor continues to grow and develop his play, we will find out if he has what it takes to become the next Jasper Clayton

Let me tell you about my DOPE tight idol Ben Dover of the HamiltionsteelBIRDS. This guy is a real tight and dope Dman whomst I grease La Roach constantly strive to emulate wow he is fast I can barely see him on the ice almost as if he is some kind of insane hockey phantom blowing past everyone, He literally could not be faster then he is. Although my own personal on ice speed is modest by comparison I will by strapping small children to my legs and back whilst skating as fast as possible through a red bull crashed ice course with 2 tim hortons double doubles in my hands dual wield caffeine fueled insanity training.

The reasoning behind my focus on skating is the importance it holds in the current state of our game. Foot speed by itself is important however alone it is not enough to carry you to success. With a premium placed on positional and transitional play both of those attributes, if they are weak can be patched over or simply supplemented by straight hauling ass down the ice like a goddamn freight train destined to slam some GINOS into the net, Also if you are like me and want to cave in someones head going at sixty miles per hour and driving your shoulder into someones orbital bone killing them on the ice, speed may or may not play a factor.

When I heard about this website on a Reddit thread, someone posted that new members have a pretty big disavantage compare to regens. Someone new would have to put a lot of time doing media or signatures to keep up with members who have been around for a while and are rich. Even though I didn't understand all of it back then, now I know what this person meant. You do need quite a lot of money and invest a lot of time to create a superstar. That’s why I’m glad I chose a defensive d-man as my first player. I see Ti-Guy Emond as a role player playing on the bottom d-pair all his career.

Looking at those SHL rosters, the one guy I see some similarity and look up to with is Clint Eastwood of the San Francisco Pride. Don't get me wrong, I don't see Ti-Guy be one day as good as this guy but he's the closest I could find when it comes to the build/playing style. After all, Clint was drafted 4th overall while Ti-Guy was a 7th round pick. Clint is 6’4 237 lbs which is pretty similar to Ti-Guy's 6’6 240 lbs. Most SHL players don't have any points put on fighting, these two have a rating in the mid-forties. While Ti-Guy has the potential to be a more physical d-man than Clint, he will never be as sound defensively or as good with the puck or breakouts. For the rest, when Ti-Guy will be as old as Clint is now everything else should be resembling.

In his first season in the SMJHL, Clint had 2 goals and 13 assists while averaging 18 min. TOA in 50 games. He was one of the most penalized player on his team. He also recorded 79 hits, 45 block shots and only 13 shots on target. Any comparison between their rookie seasons will be very difficult as Ti-Guy has a very limited playing time. But so far, hits and block shots are the two areas where Ti-Guy shine the most, just like Clint. Finally, with only 1 shot recorded, it seems pretty obvious these 2 players won't ever be known as goal scorers.

Oi I want to grow as a forward version of Alonzo Garbanzo. It don't matter how we score the goals. If sitting back looking for the pass is what gets it done than that is what I do lad. I'm team fighter and warrior. Alonzo Garbanzo is one of the all time greats who has helped the Chiefs to maintain consistency over since the early 20's. I want to be like that in a way. I want to be quick pass first center. The kind who can rush down the ice and set up the free forward who is ready to snipe the easy goal. Beyond my passing and speed I'm also working really hard on making sure I've got good defense. It is not acceptable to have defensive issues, I plan on being one of the best all around lads on the ice. Scoring wont really take a large priority in my mind. Of course I'll make sure to improve on it but I"m not going to sweat it if I'm the type of player to score 12 in a season. So long as I assist on 50 lad. The last attribute of note in skill set is my face off ability. At the moment it is mediocre but I plan on being on of the most consistent lads in the circle you'll see.

When Elias Svensson first looked into enlisting into the SMJHL to participate and eventually transition into the top tier defenseman he has been growing into at this point, he looked to model his game and really shape his build around an already successful SHL player named Joe Kurczewski.

Starting out as a brand new rookie Elias knew his conditioning would be key to being successful in the SMJHL. Having the ability to play all the key minutes at 110% with 70 EN was a great building block to start with. Joe, boasts a 90 EN rating which entails the ability to be a complete ironman on the blue line which is the model Elias will continue to follow.

With 99 DEF and SK as well Joe can skate and defend the highest talent the SHL has to offer. Elias looks to establish these skills early and maintain a strong defensive presence with his 75 DEF and 62 SK himself. He should be hiring a new skating coach in the near future to continue to improve his skating ability.

It’s unclear as of now if Elias will transition to more of a scoring driven dman but i’m sure it’s in the realm of posibilities in the future. A key component to being a successful point generating dman with be an improved upon scoring stat as seen in Joe’s build with his 99 SC rating.

Max Poulin has always respected and looked up to Lord Vader. While Lord Vader is a defensive defense man, he and Max both share the strengths of passing, puck handling, and defense. While not Quebecois, it's hard to ignore how incredibly gifted Lord Vader is on the blue line.

He can't begin to explain what Lord Vader has done for him as a child. Yes, Montreal is the home of hockey and who cares about Texas but who can ignore someone 6'8" and making waves? Max found himself drawn to not only the physicality of Vader's play, but how Vader would move the puck up and even score points settled the debate for a young Max to choose between forward and defense.

Max spent hours practicing dekes and dangles because the ability to move the puck back up to the forwards is something that even the most defensive-minded defense knows. If Lord Vader can do, Max can also do it. While Max still struggles with giving hits, he knows that he will one day get there. He may or may not have a Lord Vader jersey somewhere in his closet at home. Though if he ever has a chance to meet his hero, Max might break out the nicest Star Wars themed baking that he has.
