S57 PT #4 - Rivalry Week

I don't know how the rest of the Platoon feels but I have always felt a rivalry with the Tampa Bay Barracuda. Right off the bat, with their creation they were a natural rival. they came into the league and split West Kendall's local market. They weren't even up in the pan handle where maybe there weren't too many Platoon die hard. No they set up shop a few hours away from West Kendall. That was the catalyst for the Fight For Florida which I have written about before. For the most part the Platoon and Barracuda have been well matched with the Platoon (at least when I wrote about it a few season back) having the slight advantage in the match up. With the Platoon's move to Baltimore the rivalry of proximity changed. It has now become a rivalry to not be the worst in the east. Both teams have been rebuilding for a bit and the rivalry has been a could motivator for the rough seasons. Soon the rivalry will change again when both teams finish their rebuild and are fighting for the top spot in the Atlantic.

I think the answer is pretty clear when it comes to Maine, the Newfoundland Berserkers. A division rival, kicked us out of playoffs last season, denied us a cup the season before, there is just constant fighting between us two. I would say that we have somewhat friendly rivalry with Vancouver, being the two teams that ended up not getting to playoffs the 2 first FHM seasons, although that has died down since they play on the other side of the league and we don't get too many games against them, also counting how differently the teams have been doing ever since the 12 team playoffs. Other than that, I am not really old enough to remember any particular rivalries of ye old Halifax, and who they would beef with, but I am pretty sure we disliked Detroit a lot thanks to Troy Reynolds and that was a fun thing going on for some time back then.

For Calgary, I think you could make an argument for a few teams as our rival, but I think the majority of people would agree that Edmonton is by far our biggest rival. First of all, you have the whole Battle of Alberta aspect of the rivalry, then to top it off, we always seem to be near the top of the West together, jockeying for that 1st position. Finally we always seem to meet in the playoffs, which in my very biased opinion, are typically great series with a very back and forth type of hockey. We have fun poking fun at each other and I can honestly say that Edmonton has a great team with both players and users. There's not an overly polarizing figure on the team which makes the rivalry just that much better. I cant see anyone overtaking Edmonton spot as our top rival and I wouldn't have it any other way.

While the Minnesota Chiefs used to have a more heated rivalry with the rest of the Northwest division before their fall from grace, the Minnesota Monarchs haven't had the luxury of experiencing the play-offs yet - where true rivalries are born. Part of me wants to say that Winnipeg is always on our thoughts, as this "measuring stick" to where our play-off hopes may lie. Unfortunately, there is still work to do before we can make the race for third position in the division an interesting one.

However, a new contender cropped up in the Northwest in S56 - the year of our post-50th anniversary rebrand, must I add - the Seattle Argonauts. While they're still a relatively new franchise, without much of a history, they've been a thorn in our sides from their inception. The fourth place in the division always seems to be at stake whenever we face each other, and the games are tightly contested affairs between a defensive-minded Seattle squad, and a high-speed offense in Minnesota. It'll be interesting to see how these two franchises will push each other in the next few seasons, seeing as they're eyeing the same goal : to end the Canadian supremacy over the Northwest Division.

The biggest rivalry in the SHL environment is actually in the SMJHL. The Kelowna Knights and the Vancouver Whalers have been bitter rivals since both franchises were founded in the early days of the SHL website. Looking back, the S20s and the S30s were particularly vicious between both teams. To this day, when you ask any player/user on the site what the biggest rivalry on the site is, it probably comes to this one.
Having been a part of this rivalry in the early 30s, S31 was particularly vicious, with the Knights reverse sweeping the Whalers to move to the cup finals and win their first of back-to-back cups. I remember discord & site comments from both sides as the series developed and how intense some users got.
Both teams are tied for the most successful teams in the SMJHL when it comes to Four Star Cups and even if the rivalry has died down a bit in recent seasons due to teams being on different rebuild/compete cycles, it has never truly stopped.

Traditionally the Platoon's rival has been the Tampa Bay Barracuda. Both of the teams being in Florida made the local rivalry logical. The move up to Baltimore put us in an interesting place, and TBB's restructuring alongside BAP's has led to a temporary armistice between the two teams. Currently I would say BAP doesn't have a direct rival, our games with the Wolfpack do get pretty physical and heated on and off the ice. Lots of injuries and profanities led to the network covering the SHL having to broadcast the games on a 35 second delay to clear up the language so sponsors wouldn't back out. Baltimore is focused on itself first and foremost, that's where our strength currently lies. When the time comes we will stand in the ring and take on any and all challenger who wish to prove themselves against us. If that ends up in developing and new rival then so be it.

BAP v. the world.

I would say that currently the biggest rival of the Newfoundland Berserkers would have to be the Carolina Kraken. A devastating defeat in the conference finals in s54 to the Kraken was my first experience as I witnessed it right before getting drafted to the Berserkers. Then I was part of the team that toppled them in the semi-finals in s55 on the way to our championship! Then is S56 we both lost to vancouver on their way to their championship. Now in S57, both our teams are in a rebuild phase and in preparation to make our ways to the top of the J again. So I think we are lined up to continue this rivalry for a good long while. Also It is also a rivalry on a personal note because many of my LAP teammates and fellow prospects are also from the Kraken organization unfortunately. So @sve7en , @Gumbaman , @canes2112 and @LarryTheMVP , y'all a bunch of goofs.

I play for the Atlanta Inferno and I would say our biggest rival is Chicago.  I say Chicago because they exposed me in the expansion draft which is the only reason I'm on this godforsaken team.  Ya know when Chicago traded for me while I was still a prospect I thought "wow this is gonna be great!  My teammate from Newfoundland, Minamino is here.  Both my GMs from Newfoundland are on the team!  Chicago drafts so many Newfoundland prospects I'll have a lot of friends here!"  but no they exposed me in the expansion draft.  And I would argue my own former GM and former friend Corey Kennedy is to blame.  He's friends with my current shitty GM in Atlanta Ekko van Otter and Corey was talking me up before the expansion draft.  I'd never had any previous interaction with Hotdog so why else would he draft a former IA first gen that doesn't really train during the season.  Anyway fuck Chicago.

I really don' t feel like we have much in terms of rivalry, at least currently with other teams. While we might have had some in the past I personally am too uneducated about the topic to talk about those. And looking back to our division we have been mostly rebuilding for last 10 seasons with our rivalry being with ourselves and the casino odds. Now that we are heading to top it seems that both New Orleans and San Francisco are already rebuilding or at least heading that way and likely wont be challenging us for while, that leaves Los Angeles Panthers as someone who we might start building a rivalry with but I'm still interested to see what direction that team takes in few seasons, if they too will head to rebuild or can they take advantage of old grandfathered contracts running out which should result in more players needing to move from their teams, only time will tell.

So with regards to this rivalry thing. I have not paid much attention to who would be considered NEWs rival, as recently we are in a rebuild and not really that amazing of a team. I would say if any kind of rivalry might be formed, or can exist it could potentially be with Atlanta. Reason I chose Atlanta was because our former co-gm hotdog, left and got his own team which is Atlanta and now it is nice just beating them to show hotdog we are better than his team. Of course it is all friendly without any negative feelings because I love hotdog. Other than that, I wanted to say Hamilton but they are on a completely different level then us currently and it wouldnt be considered a rivalry at all. All in all, it was hard for me to come up with a rival team, as I stated we are in a rebuild.

Additionally I would like to add, Wolves are better than that fire bird, so there. Maybe it's just me having abandonment issues for hotdog leaving, since he was co-gm when i was drafted, and now I don't talk to him as much anymore because he has his own team to manage, or maybe I am just jealous of him, that much remains to be seen. All in all I believe currently Atlanta is New Englands number one rival, and of course it is a friendly rivalry. I hope that as we get better though , we actually do form some sort of strong rivalry with a team in this league. Maybe we already have, but im not that saavy on SHL history.

Code:
Which team is your team's biggest rival in the league and why? This could be due to recent history, old history, medium history, personal beef, branding antagonism, etc. - whatever the reason, which team in the league would you consider to be the biggest rival of your team? (SHL or SMJHL).

I dont really have anyone in mind because I try to stay pretty neutral with everyone. The only 2 things I can really think of as like rivals would be the Panthers and the Steelhawks. But not for any bad reasons, its more for the friendly competition I have with the people on those teams. Obviously if I go through the whole league, one way or another I have made friends and contacts with the opponent. But for the Steelhawks, I would be going up against my brother which is always a little bit of bragging rights. Can always show off a little that you beat the other guy when you going up against family. Also lemme not forget the amount of Whalers that are there from when we won in the J like Aaron Wilson and Dale Miller
And with the Panthers, there are just so many familiar faces from the Specter days. And now I have also moved onto another team for the next couple of seasons. So seeing Sloth and Fox and TDZ on the ice, aswell as Nicholas Williams being traded on the same day as me. It is just such a weird thing wearing different colored jerseys
