This is going to be a quick deep-dive to how the Yukon Malamutes did against every single other team in the SJHML. The Yukon Malamutes took over from the Anaheim Outlaws in Season 65, and is the newest team in the SJHML. This means this will compare the results between the Malamutes and all other teams over 5 seasons (until season 69). This will include pre-season, regular season, and play-offs.
So let’s start with the Anchorage Armada. The 2 teams have played each other 26 times in total. Two of these games did need an overtime, in which both teams won 1 time. The matches between these 2 teams started great for the Malamutes winning the first 5 matches before losing 1 and winning 2 more. After this the Malamutes lost 5 of the next 6 matches (1 in overtime), before going onto a 5 win streak again. In more recent times the Malamutes lost 6 of the last 7 games between the 2 bringing it to a total of:
26 games played, 14 wins, 11 losses, 1 OTL (and 1 OTW), 98 GF, 97 GA for a difference of +1 , and 29 points.
Next up we have the Carolina Krakens, the matches between the Malamutes and the Krakens had 2 overtimes which were both won by the Malamutes. Despite this the matchup started really bad for the Malamutes losing 5 of the first 6 matches (with their only win happening in a shootout). Following this the Malamutes won 13 of the next 14 matches (1 in overtime) for a really dominant showing. This was however following by a pretty even period (3 wins, 4 losses), before going on a 4 game lose streak in the most recent matches. This brings this matchup to a total of:
31 games played, 17 wins, 14 losses, 0 OTL (and 2 OTW), 103 GF, 104 GA for a difference of -1 and 29 points.
The next team is the Colorado Raptors. This is a close matchup, with 9 games going into OT, 5 being won by the Malamutes, and 4 by the Raptors. It started pretty even, in the first 14 games the teams went 7-7, following the next 7 games which contained 5 Raptors win, the Malamutes started being the stronger team, winning 10 of the next 13 games. The final 4 games however were all won by the Raptors, bringing the total to:
38 games played, 19 wins, 15 losses, 4 OTL (and 5 OTW), 125 GF, 129 GA for a difference of -4 and 42 points.
Onto the Detroit Falcons. During all the games between these 2 teams only 1 game reached OT, which was eventually won by the Malamutes. But despite this the start of this matchup was horrendous for the Malamutes, losing 8 of the first 10 matches, following this game a 7 game winstreak, followed by 2 losses and another win. But during the stretch of the last 12 games Falcons won 11, only losing the 1 overtime game in between. In total this matchup reaches:
31 games played, 10 wins, 21 losses, 0 OTL (and 1 OTW), 85 GF, 129 GA for a difference of -44 and 20 points.
The next matchup is against the Great Falls Grizzlies, 4 of the games between the Malamutes and the Grizzlies went into OT, with the Malamutes winning 1 of the 4. The matchup starting pretty evenly with a 7-6 W/L ratio over the first 13 games. This got followed by a 5 game winstreak for the Malamutes, followed by a 3 losestreak and a 3 winstreak. Then during the last 5 games the Malamutes won 2, while the Grizzlies won 3. In total this brings this matchup to:
29 games played, 17 wins, 9 losses, 3 OTL (and 1 OTW), 102 GF, 97 GA for a difference of +5 and 37 points.
The Kelowna Knights matchup is up next. With both matches reaching overtime being won by the Malamutes The results also show a pretty horrendous season by the Knights when the Malamutes came into the league, with the Malamutes winning 9 of the first 10 games. This did get followed by a 4 win streak of the Knights, followed by a 4 win streak for the Malamutes. The final stretch of 10 games had only 3 Malamutes victories. This brings the total to:
28 games played, 16 wins, 12 losses, 0 OTL (and 2 OTW), 104 GF, 77 GA for a difference of +27 and 32 points.
Following the Knights, are the Maine Timbers. Another matchup were every single OT was won by the Malamutes, having 4 OT’s in total. But for the rest this matchup wasn’t as good as the Knights one for the Malamutes, winning 7 of the first 10 games. But following this was a pretty dire form in this matchup, going decently evenly at first with the Malamutes winning 4 of the next 7 games, but then only winning 2 of the last 10 games. This brings the total to:
27 games played, 13 wins, 14 losses, 0 OTL (and 4 OTW), 83 GF, 84 GA for a difference of -1 and 26 points.
Next on the list is the Nevada Battleborn. With a 2-1 W/L record in overtime covering over a pretty bad general record. With the Malamutes only winning a few games in-between, with a 3-win streak the only win streak the Malamutes ever held over the Battleborn. In total the results are:
28 games played, 9 wins, 18 losses, 1 OTL (and 2 OTW), 64 GF, 124 GA for a difference of -60 and 19 points.
Next up are the Newfoundland Berserkers. With a 3-1 OT record against the Bersekers it is a bit brighter this time. Despite losing 4 of the first 5 matches, the Malamutes managed to turn it around with a 8 game winstreak. Followed by another 4/5 matches lost, followed by a 8/10 matches won, to end it with a 3/6 W/L record. In total this brings this matchup to:
39 games played, 22 wins, 16 losses, 1 OTL (and 3 OTW), 120 GF, 110 GA for a difference of 10 and 45 points.
Onto last seasons champions the Quebec City Citadelles. After a few matchups were the Malamutes managed to win most of the OT games, we got another team here were that didn’t happen with QCC winning 3 of the 5 OT’s. The start between these 2 teams was especially interesting, with the Malamutes winning 5 of the 10 games, with 4 of these 10 getting decided by OT’s. following this was a period of QCC domination winning 7 of the next 10 matches, followed by some Malamutes domination with them winning 6 of the 10 matches. But the final 11 matches were for QCC, with the Malamutes only winning 3 more matches from those 11. In total this brings the score to:
42 games played, 17 wins, 22 losses, 3 OTL (and 2 OTW), 118 GF, 134 GA for a difference of -16 and 37 points.
Next up are the Regina Elk. Matches between these 2 had a massive 11 OT’s, 8 of which were won by the Malamutes. Despite this the first few games didn’t look that good for the Malamutes losing 7 of the first 10 matches between these teams. The next 10 games ended more evenly with the Malamutes winning 6 games. Following this was a 4 game lose streak, which got followed by a bit of ping-pong in results, with both teams winning 5 games. In the end the results are:
35 games played, 16 wins, 16 losses, 3 OTL (and 8 OTW), 95 GF, 113 GA for a difference of -18 and 35 points.
Just 2 more games the go, and next up are the St. Louis Scarecrows. With the scarecrows winning 6 of the first 8 games, the Scarecrows did look dominant in this match-up. But the next few games went a bit better with the Malamutes winning 7 of the next 10 games, before going into a 4 game losestreak. Following this were 2 Malamutes wins, before the results going MAL-STL-MAL-STL for the last 7 games. This brings the total to:
31 games played, 14 wins, 17 losses, 0 OTL (and 2 OTW), 95 GF, 118 GA for a difference of -23 and 28 points.
Now onto the last team, the Vancouver Whalers. With the first 10 games going 4-6 MAL-VAN this looked like a close match-up. This same happened in the next 10 games, with the last 10 games going 5-5. This brings the total to:
30 games played, 13 wins, 14 losses, 3 OTL (and 1 OTW), 100 GF, 99 GA for a difference of +1 and 29 points.
So onto the total results. In the table above here you see the results Malamutes got against each team, with at the team the team Malamutes (on average) did the best against, and on the bottom the team the Malamutes did the worst against. Some interesting things are that despite having a good average points, the goal difference against the Regina Elk is pretty bad (compared to teams around them). It also seems like the less Overtime Losses, the worse the Malamutes do against that team, which is most likely because these teams defeat us before OT starts. On average games also end with 3+ goals for the Malamutes, apart from the worst matchups, and against the Regina Elk, which is interesting as it either means the Elk is a low scoring game (at least when the Malamutes win).
