S79 IIHF ANNOUNCEMENT - The Tournament is Going to be Hosted in…

The IIHF HO is thrilled to announce that the Season 79 IIHF tournament will be hosted in the historic and passionate sports city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania! Home to the Philadelphia Forge Forge and renowned for it’s dedicated fan base and vibrant atmosphere, Philadelphia is set to deliver an unforgettable experience for hockey fans around the world! The Federation Heads, @Vandy and @cake307, are excited to host the world next week. When asked why we should be excited about the United States hosting the event, they didn’t hold back. “The tournament is coming to the biggest federation for the first time in a while, as well as the home of many SHL and SMJHL teams, where the best in the world gather to play. Philadelphia has world class stadiums, world class players, and the intensity that should accompany a world championship, all set to bring together the biggest spectacle the IIHF has seen in a long time.” They aren’t wrong. The love and passion for hockey is deep in the USA with the majority of SHL teams calling the country home. The United States are also home to the most players of any country, with 104 players vying for a spot on the roster.
Fans can expect a great atmosphere and games filled with high intensity moments. Cake307 went on to say “Many IIHF players already play in America or Canada, you can expect them to be familiar with the ice and at home, bringing their very best from the first puck drop to the last bone shattering hit in each and every game.” That will mean players will be ready right off out of the gate to put on a good show! What can you expect from the home team? “Fans can expect a dose of history in why Team USA has resilience. Playing in a city which forged a document which quite literally stated we will fight for what is ours. They can expect great hockey and enjoy the sights of a world class city.” Vandy said before rambling on about “the true Philly experience”.
In a city where independence was declared and the course of a nation was forever changed, we’ll have the opportunity to witness teams strive to forge their own history at the S79 IIHF Tournament.

Tournament Dates:
Pre-Tournament: November 28-29
Group Stage: November 30 - December 4
Medal Round: December 6-8

Groups:
This year’s groups are full of excitement! Each group consists of half of the playoff field from last year’s tournament.
Group A does seem like it may be more of a blood-bath. The nearly undefeated S78 Champs - Canada Canada will look to continue their impressive streak. Switzerland Switzerland , France France and Norway Norway will all be looking to take them down as they all had solid Group stages last year.  The Hosts, United States Usa will look to get back to their S77 form where they topped their group before being upset by Ireland in the Quarterfinals. Lucky for them, they have been bouncing back and forth between advancing to the medal round team and missing it all together. We’ll see if they advance and keep the pattern going. Team Quebec Quebec (peek the new Team Quebec smiley) is entering their second year in the Tournament. After a disappointing inaugural tournament, they will be looking to make a statement to show that they are a real contender.
Group B shouldn’t be scoffed at though. We will see Ireland Ireland attempt to get back onto the podium which they missed last season for the first time since S74. They will surely be looking to bounce back from an abysmal effort in S79 tournaments. Sweden Sweden and Finland Finland have been consistently near the top finishes for the past few seasons and will look to improve upon that success. Japan's Japan S79 tournament was saved by the tournament's top goalie in Base Pack. They will have to improve on all aspects of their game and hope Base Pack is as solid as they were last year to have a chance at a medal.

Players to Watch For:
Forward: William Tree - Finland - William Tree made a big jump in their second IIHF tournament with 10 points. Scoring 4 goals with 6 assists, the Fin led their team with points. After their debut in S77 where they only had 2 points. We will see if William Tree can improve their game once again and push their Finish team back into contention.
Defence: Mikkel Enevoldsen - Czechia - & San-sam Emerson - Czechia - In a league where putting the puck in the back of the net is what it's all about, these two forces on Czcheia have the potential to help lift their team to success. Emerson is coming off a hot S78 tournament that saw them lead defensive players in assists and points and place second in Top Defensive Player voting. Emerson took an impressive step forward last year going from 3 points in the S77 tournament to 13 in S78. Along side them was Enevoldsen who also stepped up their game. Going from 5 points in S77 to 11 last season placing second in goals scored (4), sixth in assists and fifth in points by a defensive player. Enevoldsen can also do it in their own zone. Placing second in hits and being near the top in blocked shots. If we see these two players elevate their game to the next level, they will be tough to compete with.
Goalie: BASE PACK - Japan - Base Pack had an outstanding tournament in S78 helping his team earn a spot in the medal round through a late push in the group stage. I’m interested to see if they can have a similar level of performance this season.
The full rosters can be found here.

Good luck to all the teams and players. Go SPORTS!

Just a small comment. It might be difficult to watch out for  Finland William Tree if the player isn't on the roster because he's inactive Smile

Would you like to pick someone else?
