Official Rap/R&B discussion thread

When God made R&B, this is what he intended it to be:

Justin Timberlake - The 20/20 Experience

Pusher Love Girl: 4.25/5
Suit & Tie (ft. Jay-Z): 4/5
Don’t Hold the Wall: 4.75/5
Strawberry Bubblegum: 4.25/5
Tunnel Vision: 5/5
Spaceship Coupe: 5/5
That Girl: 4.5/5
Let the Groove Get In: 4.25/5
Mirrors: 5/5
Blue Ocean Floor: 5/5

46/50 -> 4.6/5

Absolutely fantastic album. I loved his first two albums, Justified and FutureSex/LoveSounds, but this blows those two out of the water. Just pure mastery of the art right here. I don't know what else to say; speechless to say the least about this one. Timbaland's production throughout is fantastic, Timberlake's vocals are amazing and the lyrics are fantastic. Just nothing is off here.

I love Suit & Tie and Mirrors, listen to S&T at least twice a day. I really can't wait to get this album and listen to more of those songs. This really is just what god wanted in an album.

An old man's dream ended. A young man's vision of the future opened wide. Young men have visions, old men have dreams. But the place for old men to dream is beside the fire.

Obviously, none of us are Lil Wayne fans, but he's still huge, so I'm gonna ask a question here.

How much units do you think his new album, I Am Not a Human Being II, will sell during its first week? For reference, his last album sold 964,000 units week one. But, part one of I Am Not a Human Being sold just 110,000 digitally and then 125,000 on CD. I'm thinking it'll come out between 250k-300k, personally.

If he becomes healthy probably around 300-500k. If he gets worse or dies it'll go platinum.

Thank you to My boys @Merica and @Ragnar for the lovely sigs!

Question as a sort of research: what are your thoughts on Macklemore's "Same Love"

I'm not a big fan of Macklemore, but I enjoy some songs that I feel have incredible lyrical value. This one is all about supporting same sex marriage and as a Forensics guy I know a lot of homosexual people and they are all incredible. I have no problem with them and I don't believe anybody should. One of the speeches I do is called Rhetorical Criticism, where I take something that is in some form an advertisement or speech or any form of communication and analyze it by taking an academic model and applying it to what I'm analyzing.

Currently my speech analyzes the epideictic strategies of Phil Knight's speech at the Joe Paterno memorial service in January 2012. This competition is very difficult and requires for judges to have at least a bachelor's degree just to be somewhat qualified to think about judging it. My thought is that I'm going to try and analyze next year: how does Macklemore's "Same Love" song/music video alter public perceptions of same sex marriage?

I just find this song to be very moving in that it really shows how we stereotype these people in unimaginable ways just as we did and in some ways still do to blacks, asians, women, etc. We should change this and never post such things anywhere whether online or speaking it out loud, yet we do without thinking. I'm hoping when I do this speech I'm able to bring forth this fact and alter some perceptions myself, maybe helping people grow and understand just how much these stereotypes can hurt.

Like I said, I'm wondering what your thoughts on this song was. I understand you may not like Macklemore as a rapper, personally I find him to be average with a few incredible songs that are very moving and a few that are like Thrift Shop, very catchy but not as lyrically involved to make me listen to it multiple times. If you can help me see if it has had any effect on people then I thank you for I'm hoping my speech can be on a very relevant topic.

I'm not a big Macklemore fan, but that song really speaks to you. Props to him for actually being different and showing that homophobia is just ignorant. Definitely a moving song. I gained respect for him for doing that. It's not a song that really has replay value (for me at least), but that's just me.

Coming from a guy who lives with a homophobic person (my sisters bf) I really respect people that try to stop people from thinking like that. I'm not gay lol, but I can't stand homophobia. It's the most ignorant thing possible. Why people hate on people for living their life and doing them is beyond me. It's just ridiculous. I know I say "*****" or "that's gay" alot and that's just from where I've grown up and who I hang out with, but I really can't stand homophobia. Also, sometimes I feel like the only people that hate gay people are the ones that are unsure about their sexuality themselves lol.

I think Mackelmore touches on something that is taboo in the genre of Hip Hop. The lyrics are good and he somewhat brings to light the issue. Good song, good lyrics, but I think the real star and the person that really drives this song is Mary Lambert who is the only homosexual person on the track.

I also have an issue with people who use ***** and that's gay all the time and then say they can't stand homophobia, when they are being homophobic themselves.

I don't really like his music and think he's pretty weak overall, but that's a good song with a good message. As shown by the reaction in hip hop when Frank Ocean came out as bi, hip hop is not as homophobic as people think and this song shows that.

Shitty songs (In my opinion) that all the grade 9 girls listen to and think they're badasses (Thats what goes on in my town)
