Rookie Goalies: How They Doin'? PT. 2

(This post was last modified: 01-24-2019, 10:38 PM by LGRW613.)

ALRIGHT BOYS AND GIRLS, it's finally here. The end of the season, it's playoff time. So I figured i'd go ahead and answer the question on everyone's mind. HOW DID THOSE ROOKIE TENDIES DO?! We're about to find out.

So I thought about doing this post like I did my last one, but I really didn't feel like my last one showcased the insane rookie goalie talent we have in the SMJHL right now. So, this time around, I'm going to go in depth on every rookie we got! Plus, with the draft coming up, hopefully this is a good place to get all your goalie information. So without further ado, let's get started!

Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws Outlaws

Tibuk Soonika -  So for anyone that actually gave a shit about my last post (so basically only rookie goalies and a couple of my Crows), you'll know that I had my chips all on Soonika. He was having a phenomenal year for a rookie, posting HUGE numbers in a nice sample size. Things haven't changed much for Soonika, though his numbers did dip slightly. Tibuk finishes the season with a record of 9-12-1, with a 0.892 Sv% and a 2.78 GAA, which puts him 3rd among rookie goalies in both categories. He also collected an assist, and nabbed one first star. My opinion? Soonika looks good. All these numbers seem absolutely sustainable, and I'm pretty sure his drop in numbers could easily be due to a few bad games. His record also speaks to the quality of the Outlaws this season, who finished 8th overall with a 20-28-2 record. Second best rookie goalie in the league, and there's a small argument to be made for the best. Anaheim's future is bright in net.

Mike Hunt - So, best name in the league? Come on, that's a classic. Hunt seems to have won the starter(?) position on Anaheim, starting 28 games compared to Soonkia's 22. HOWEVER, Hunt seems to have been really hung out to dry in Anaheim, posting a 0.880 Sv% and a 3.33 GAA. What trips me out more is that he tied for 1st among rookie goalies in Shutouts with 3, which made up the only 3 shutouts on the team this year. My opinion? Soonika seems like he's going to be better (Sorry). But Hunt is right there, a big off-season and training camp and Hunt could very well be the #1 goalie in the league next season. Shutouts are hard to come by in this league, and netting 3 of them this season on a bottom of the pack team is seriously no joke. Put him on your watch list for next year.

Armada Armada Armada Armada Armada Armada Armada Armada Armada Armada Armada Armada Armada Armada Armada Armada Armada Armada Armada Armada

Peter Larson - Pretty objectively the best rookie goalie in the league. I had him high on my list initially, but holy shit did he go off to close out the season. Larson played 42 games this season, which ties him for 3rd among rookie goalies. Let me rattle off some other stats for you, and I'd like to point out that these are his OVERALL ranks. This guy is 1st in Sv% (0.898), 1st in GAA (2.33), Tied for 1st in Shutouts (3), and 4th overall in goalie wins. How is this guy a rookie? Is he drafted yet? If not, he better go 1st overall, because holy shit! This was his ROOKIE year in the SMJHL, and he's already arguably the best goalie in the league! The biggest knock against him is the fact that Anchorage is so fucking good, but you could probably say Larson is the biggest reason the team finished 2nd overall. My opinion? Best goalie in the SMJHL. Draft him. If you drafted him, pay him. If you paid him, get on your knees and thank the fucking LORD ALMIGHTY that this is the future of your goaltending.

Raptors Raptors Raptors Raptors Raptors Raptors Raptors Raptors Raptors Raptors Raptors Raptors Raptors Raptors Raptors Raptors Raptors Raptors Raptors Raptors

Yuri Ushakov - Ushakov is an interesting case. I think he would have benefited from being a 1B instead of a 1, but that's just me. Ushakov lead all rookies goalies (2nd overall) with 45 games played. However, his record is 18-21-5. He finished the season with a 0.882 Sv%, and a 2.92 GAA. His stats are good, but his team is not. Add in the fact that Colorado actually played with a slight edge through the beginning of the season (shoutout to the guy who got suspended), and it really just shows how bad this team is. My opinion? I feel bad for Ushakov. This team is clearly not a legitimate contender, and I really think that he would be an asset for any contending team. Fingers crossed that Colorado has a good draft.

Falcons Falcons Falcons Falcons Falcons Falcons Falcons Falcons Falcons Falcons Falcons Falcons Falcons Falcons Falcons Falcons Falcons Falcons Falcons Falcons

Jakub Hasek - Hasek has had a decent season, posting a 4-3-0 record with a 0.838 Sv% and a 3.74 GAA. There's really not much to say here unfortunately. He's decent when he's been in, which has helped pushed Detroit up to the #1 spot. My opinion? I doubt he gets playoff time unless we see a really bad game from Cedric Robinson. The kid's got potential, but he's going to need an opportunity to play a few more games before we can really see what he can do.

raiders raiders raiders raiders raiders raiders raiders raiders raiders raiders raiders raiders raiders raiders raiders raiders raiders raiders raiders raiders

Mike McKorsy - McKorsy has a good year, all things considered. 42 appearances, 11-24-6 record, a 0.875 Sv% and a 3.33 GAA. These numbers are actually a lot better than anyone should expect considering Halifax is the second worst team in the league. Those 6 OTL's put him 1st among rookie goalies as well, so kudos to McKorsy keeping this team in games. My opinion? Dude's got skill. Put him on Anchorage or Detroit, and I'm probably writing a completely different piece. Like the Raptors, McKorsy needs to hope that Halifax has a good draft to help this poor guy out.

Knights Knights Knights Knights Knights Knights Knights Knights Knights Knights Knights Knights Knights Knights Knights Knights Knights Knights Knights Knights

Low Temp - Low Temp is another rookie that falls into the back-up category. Like Hasek, Temp has had a good season in very limited appearances on a top 3 team in the SMJHL. He finished the year with 9 appearances, a 4-1-0 record, a 0.866 Sv% and a 3.24 GAA on a LOADED Kelowna team. My opinion? Next year is going to be rough for him. I'm predicting that Kelowna's top players are all getting the call up to the SHL, and Kelowna is pretty thin past their top guys. HOWEVER, if the bottom line forwards can grow, combined with a solid draft, and Low Temp could see a HUGE improvement next year. Put him on the watchlist.

Lions Lions Lions Lions Lions Lions Lions Lions Lions Lions Lions Lions Lions Lions Lions Lions Lions Lions Lions Lions

Patrice Nadeau - Nadeau had a long season. Lethbridge is the worst team in the SMJHL, and Nadeau got the worst of it, appearing in 43 games this season. He finished with an 13-27-3 record, a 0.883 Sv% and a 3.23 GAA. While Nadeau finished second in GP, he landed first in Shots Against (amongst rookies), by over 100 SHOTS!. My opinion? Low key, probably the best goalie in the league. These stats put him in the middle of the pack amongst all goalies, which is impressive considering he's on the worst team in the SMJHL. Hopefully this is a one off season for the Lions.

Junebug Langdon-Wray - Langdon-Wray has a long fucking name. I'm just going to reference them by JLW. JLW finished the season with a 0.848 Sv% and a 3.85 GAA in 10 appearances. Statistically, this was not a good season for the rookie netminder, as they landed in the bottom 2 rookie goalies this season. My opinion? Too early to tell. JLW played 10 games on the worst team in the league, so there's really nothing to say here. I could say that this is bad goalie, but I don't think it's fair to judge JLW based on this super small sample size. Like their teammate, I hope the Lions improve next year so we can see exactly what JLW can be.

Militia Militia Militia Militia Militia Militia Militia Militia Militia Militia Militia Militia Militia Militia Militia Militia Militia Militia Militia Militia

Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova - Okay, I lied. AOV has a long fucking name. BUT no one's here to read about that. AOV made 13 appearances this season, finishing with a 4-3-1 record, a 0.873 Sv% and a 3.05 GAA. AOV's biggest highlight this season is probably the 1 assist he got. He also tied for 1st amongst rookies in BG, which really shows that AOV was relegated to back-up duties this season. My opinion? Like other back-up goalies, it's too early to tell! I'm not going to tear into the rookies who barely played. Let's hope that the starter gets called up next season so AOV can get a few more starts.

Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows Scarecrows

Billy Sorokin - Billy had a good season, posting a 4-5-0 record to go with a 0.876 Sv% and a 2.98 GAA. Sorokin was also the only Scarecrows goalie to post a shut out until the 3rd last day, when starter Cain nabbed his own. My opinion? I've been able to watch Sorokin as the season's gone on, because I'm on the Scarecrows. He's improved all season, and there's no reason to suspect that he won't continue to improve. I'm expecting a huge off-season from him, because there's loads of potential here. The biggest knock on his season is the limited appearances, but St. Louis has been dealing with a "Three-Headed Monster" (shoutout, gotta pimp my crows out). Next year is going to be dicey, as Sorokin and Marshall compete for the starting spot in St. Louis.

Lee Marshall - And here we are, talking about me. I'm not really sure what to say here, because I really don't want to look like I'm talking myself up. So, here are the facts. I had 11 appearances, a 6-3-0 record, a .907 Sv% and a 2.42 GAA. I finished second among rookie goalies PIMS, second in GA, and even managed to nab a 1st star (tied for 3rd among rookie goalies). My opinion? I had a really good year. It was completely unexpected, but I'm happy with it. I managed to lead all rookie goalies with that Sv%, and ended up second in GAA (First is Larson. 31 more games played, LOWER GAA. Dude is the best goalie in the league). I'm not sure what St. Louis is going to do next season, but I'm looking forward to it!

Whalers Whalers Whalers Whalers Whalers Whalers Whalers Whalers Whalers Whalers Whalers Whalers Whalers Whalers Whalers Whalers Whalers Whalers Whalers Whalers

Eddy Ask Jr. - Ask Jr. has had a really nice season. He had 16 appearances, finished with a 6-4-0 record, and 0.881 Sv% and a 2.84 GAA. Ask Jr. was relegated to back up duties in Vancouver, but still put on a good showing for a team that finished 4th in the SMJHL. My opinion? The kid was good. His stats show promise, and the Whalers look like an elite hockey team (provided Kennedy doesn't get the call up, which is definitely happening). HOWEVER, the kid's got that lineage power, as his father is one of the best goalies of all time. I'm going to bet on HUGE improvements from Ask Jr., and y'all can PM for my PayPal when I'm right.

Casimir Stevens - Stevens won the starting job in Vancouver, and rolled with it all season. He finished with a 23-13-4 record in 42 appearances, and a 0.877 Sv% and 2.99 GAA to go with it. Fun fact, he finished 1st among rookie goalies in PIMs with 21. 21 PIMs. Second place had 6 (Hint: it's me). He also lead all rookie goalies with 4 assists. My opinion? This dude is equal parts Martin Brodeur and Sean Avery. His playmaking was on display this year, so maybe the league needs to widen the trapezoid. On the flip side, I seriously don't know how a goalie spends 21 minutes in the box. Stevens, CALM DOWN GOD DAMN IT.

And that's it! I really hope you guys enjoy the article. I had a lot of fun writing it, and I'm also going to include my shitty spreadsheet so you guys can see all the stats for yourselves. I'm sorry for rambling on, but I've honestly really enjoyed my first season here. Everyone's been super friendly, my team's been great, and writing these stat-based articles is something I wish I had more opportunities to do.  See y'all in the playoffs!

Awesome article!  I’m going to go find part 1 I’m bummed I missed it.

Halifax really did Mike no favors in the first half and he stole some games for us. Happy McKorsy is in Halifax and som SHL team is gonna get a great teammate in the draft.

Also wanted to say congrats to Larson on the big year!

Great article dude love the detail you put in for everyone. This has been a really cool draft class of goalies to be apart of.

Should mention, we have a trash talk discord channel for this group, but we only have about half of us in it, any of the goalies mentioned that wants to join, pm me your discord name, I'll send and invite.
