I think the most surprising thing that has happened to me during my short SHL career so far was the announcement of the expansion draft. Obviously I knew that expansion drafts existed and have happened before but when it actually happens you realize that theres a very likely chance that some of your teammates wont be on your team anymore. This to me is why I think this is the biggest suprise even though to many other people im sure its not big deal, its really the only one thats actually affected me personally up to this point. It really is bittersweet because even though it may be a surprise im definitely looking forward to seeing how it plays out, it definitely seemt to be a very exciting process and if I wasnt already on a (formerly) rebuilding team im very happy with It definitely would have been something I would have looked into being exposed for. I wish only the best to our new teams. Hope they join the pride on our redemption tour of people talking about how trash were.

The most surprising thing will always and continue to be when players on your team are traded. Buffalo has a history of having too many riches and not being able to keep all the talent they continually breed each and every season. So when things like cap or the expansion drafts come buffalo is always bleeding some of their immense riches on the way to greatness. It always comes as a surprise as you work with these guys when they come in and then they have to go just because of circumstances and its never easy. When players are traded away or taken in expansion its always a surprise and it's always a process of having to play against these guys instead of with them from that point on. There is always a limited number of roster spots and when buffalo barely misses in the draft these things are going to continue to happen, and just like life you have to keep on trucking.

One of the most unexpected events for my player was being drafted to the Hamilton Steelhawks. I had absolutely no clue where I would be selected, but just based on mock drafts and TPE lists, I figured I would be a top 10 pick. Almost all of those teams in the top 10 were either rebuilding, coming off awful seasons, or would be bad for the foreseeable future. So to be selected by one of the best franchises in the entire league was an incredibly welcomed surprise! I knew that from day one, we would be competitive and I knew our front office knew exactly what it takes to build a winner throughout the years. While I haven't played a game for the Steelhawks yet, I know that my future is in good hands with this team, this management, and the wonderful fans of Hamilton. I can't wait to don that jersey for the first time, which will only reiterate how fortunate I was to be taken by such a successful franchise with the fifth overall pick. It definitely was a goal of mine to be selected in the top 10 and Hamilton not only made that happen, but made me feel welcomed by a winner immediately. Go Steelhawks!

And Let's Retire at the Pinnacle

An Unexpected Surprise is just how far I have been able to come so far in my career. I was never the top guy on any team I played for. Hence why I was a 6th round pick in the S54 SMJHL Entry Draft. No one ever really expected much from me including myself. But all along, my mindset was to go out there and out work and out hustle everyone. Leave it out there on the ice. I guess that work ethic paid off a little as the Baltimore Platoon surprisingly took me the following season S55 20th overall. Since that time, I am been surprised ever since by how Baltimore values me as a player. I am still not one of the best players on the team, but I was still selected to Baltimore Expansion Protection List. So surprisingly, Baltimore has put a lot faith in me so I will be giving them my all and continuing doing what I have done to get me here in the first place.

the biggest surprise in recent shl history is clearly the buffalo stampede acquiring eko van otter at the S55 trade deadline. van otter was on the block after a commitment to the upcoming expansion franchise team in atlanta, and new england wanted to recoup some assets. buffalo viewed van otter as an option to both protect a roster slot in expansion and acquire a top talent to place them as true contenders to the dominant hamilton steelhawks. the biggest shock out of this move, however, was the stampede moving buffalo native and offseason acquisition joe kurczewski to free up cap space and a roster slot. kurczewski was admittedly underperforming, but signed a sweetheart deal to retire in his hometown and play with his all time greatest rivals in buffalo. san francisco stepped in to make the deal for kurczewski, which wound up being a triple whammy for the future hall of famer--he missed the playoffs, the stampede won the playoffs, and the new orleans team he left lost in a 7 game finals.

I'd say the biggest surprise I've experienced is a two-parter. In Season 41, I was set up to be among the top draft picks, maybe going number one depending on who got their ball pulled. I'd end up going 5th and was later told by JayWhy he did not for a moment expect me to be available at that point, but since I was sitting there, he took me. Went and had a long, I'd say good career with Reginald MacIntyre. Maybe not HoF, but the Rage liked me and him enough to let him ride out his entire career in Manhattan and take the record for most regular season games in their uniform.

The second part is...going back to Manhattan on my second player, Robert E. O. Speedwagon, in a much different shakeout. While I wasn't expected to go first overall in the Season 59 Draft, there was some talk about whether I'd be going in round one and where. In the minutes leading up to closing time for mock drafts, we were debating who Manhattan would go for at 12th overall. We ended up guessing someone else would be taken there. We all spread the word that Pasta the Turtle was going 12th to the Rage and I'd end up going 13th to the Barracuda. The Rage wanted Pasta more, after all. He fit them better. Then, the draft starts. At the 10th overall pick, the Edmonton Blizzard swooped in with a trade and snapped up Pasta before he could fall to the Rage. And with the Wolfpack always having Matej Winters as their player...the Rage were on the clock and decided "well, he worked out once, let's take the best available."

And that's how I ended up drafted by the Manhattan Rage twice, 18 seasons apart, in different circumstances with different players playing different positions and games.

an unexpected event in simulation hockey history is the s42 winnipeg jets who ended up missing the playoffs. the simulation hockey league franchise known as the winnipeg jets who played in the simulation hockey league western conference were a powerhouse in s41 and s43, winning the presidents trophy in each of those years if i am remembering correctly. for some reason in season fourty two of the simulaiton hockey league the simulation hockey league franchise known as the winnipeg jets did not do too hot, despite having a roster that was very simliar to the prevoius and future presidents trophy winners, and chalk full of future hall of famers and some of hte greatest players to every touch simulation hockey league ice. i guess in the end this can be chalked up to a simon t thing that happens once in a while, where a good team will jsut do bad. this ended up working out for the jets though as they were able to draft lil manius in the first round because of their resulting high pick, who was a beast of a player

Kaapo Kampainen is a reserved guy and he is mostly camera shy. He doesn't live and thrill to see the spotlights on him, he prefers to stay a bit in the shadows, lurking around but doing a good enough job so he keeps his job, of course. Which is why it came as a bit of a surprise for him when he was named captain of the Anaheim Outlaws. The quiet force behind his outspoken teammates, Kampainen was very different from the rest of the Outlaws and decided to stay clear of the controversies and let his on-ice play do the talking. It didn't really pay off for him as he had another disappointing season as the first centerman on the Californian team, but most people would agree that the team overachieved. It wouldn't have happened without Kampainen's quiet leadership and his work off the ice to get his team to perform at his best. It didn't quite work out like he intended but Kaapo keeps his head high and leaves the Outlaws for the SHL as they are on the verge of greatness and with a feeling that his teammates have learned a lot from his hard working style on the ice.

A big surprise would probably be the Vancouver Whalers S57 playoff run, as it was pretty unexpected. While it didn't lead to a Cup or even a finals appearance, the whole playoffs in general that season was a round of chaos. First up was the wildcard round, where every sense of normalcy went out the window as both the 5th and 6th seeds in Maine and Kelowna were upset in the first round, and 3 of 4 total series were won by the lower seed. Vancouver was one of these teams, beating 8th seeded Nevada to move on to the second round. Now, because of those upsets by Newfoundland and St. Louis in the wildcard, the Whalers benefitted from a wonky playoff format ensuring that they wouldn't have to see one of the top two teams in the league until the finals if they got that far. Instead, the Whalers played the 3rd seed Detroit Falcons, and this was where the legend of Playoff Valtterri Kauppinen cemented itself. The series was a Whalers sweep, and in Game 2 Valtterri Kauppinen played the game of his life with a 7-point performance which, to my knowledge, is still a SMJHL record in the FHM era for points in a single game. While the playoff run ran out of gas in the semifinal against Vincent Mietitore and the Anaheim Outlaws, Kauppinen still led the playoffs in points with 20 despite not making the finals and eventually set the franchise record for career playoff points. Another big contribution was the efforts of the all-DFA fourth line of Alexis Saint-Michel, Robert E.O. Speedwagon, and Eoin Byrne.

An unexpected event in the life of Slip McScruff was this one time when he was going through a haunted corn maze and there was a stick with a ghost on it that swung out and screamed BOO. It was very unexpected and surprising. Slip yelped like a little baby and almost dropped his organic, hyper-local corn dog. To make things worse, there was another unexpected ghost that jumped out and scared him around the next turn. This one did not have a stick and did make Slip drop his corn dog which WAS on a stick. Once his heart rate calmed down, he dusted himself off and then continued. There was yet a third ghost and he still continued to not expect it. By the time he got out on the other side, a weird old man in overalls told him the corn maze had been shut down for 10 years. But then later at night he read about this weird old guy in overalls that had run the corn maze and died 10 years ago in a freak tractor accident. Spooky.

Slip handled all this unexpected surprise by buying a 10 pack of frozen corn dogs at the super market to make up for the one he lost in the haunted corn maze.

The New Orleans Specters were supposed to be the worst team in the league in season fifty-nine. They were. This team was also supposed to win fewer than eleven games. It was assumed that the team would barely scrape double digits. In the face of terrible odds and against the expert opinion of the casino team, the New Orleans Specters were able to completely and utterly shatter their expected wins by exactly twenty percent. You heard that right, the underdogs from New Orleans exceeded the expectations of everyone and walked home with a massive twelve wins. They were told time and again that they wouldn't be able to do it, and game after game, week after week, the Specters kept fighting and skating their incorporeal butts off in order to dab on the haters. The Specters showed everyone what they were about this year, and the league won't soon forget what New Orleans were able to accomplish in Season fifty-nine.

I think the biggest surprise was trading my gud pal Gabe Johnson. I thought he was going to be a Steelhawk for life.he was my former co-GM and honestly at the time, I thought we would have to go into a rebuild with a trade with that magnitude as we only got picks back for one of the best defensemen in the league. We went on that see to win the cup, we were able to sign soulja, trade for blues and pick up tovio for the team. All three of these guys have been important for us. I feel like this was one of the biggest surprises as I never had intentions to trade Gabe or I never expected us to be in the position to win the cup the next season either. And we won the presidents trophy this season and look to have another chance at the cup.
