Double Media - Week 1, 3576 words, ready for grading

Let's have a look back what the S27 draft class has done. None of them are active anymore, but a few names got still recognized around the league. It wasn't a very deep draft class, but had quite a few elite players. I got tired and frustrated during the end and stopped writing too much on every player.

Round 1
1. Portland Admirals - Krysztof Kowalski
SHL Seasons: S27 - S35 (9 seasons)
Teams: Portland Admirals -> Texas Renegades -> Portland Admirals -> Edmonton Blizzards
Games played: 450
Goals: 64
Assists: 103
Points: 167
+/-: -63
PIM: 65
Hits: 188
Shots blocked: 66
Minutes played: 7696
Challenge Cups: 0
Awards:0
All Star Teams:0

Krysztof Kowalski was a worthy 1st overall pick at the time. But in the long run he never ever got the player that everyone saw in him. After 9 disappointing seasons his SHL career was done. In his first seven season he never got more than 20 points. But when he joined Edmonton for his last two season, he started getting better and finished both season with over 30 points. Looking back he wasn't worth a 1 overall pick.

2. Manhattan Rage - Chris Crutchfield
SHL Seasons: S28-S37 (10 seasons)
Teams: Manhattan Rage -> Los Angeles Panthers -> New England Wolfpack -> Toronto North Stars -> Minnesota Chiefs
Games played: 501
Goals: 72
Assists: 270
Points: 342
+/-: +10
PIM: 434
Hits: 945
Shots blocked:743
Minutes played: 11982
Challenge Cups: 0
Awards: RYAN JESSTER TROPHY S28; DAMIAN LITTLETON TROPHY S33
All Star Teams: S32 (1st), S34 (3rd), S35 (2nd)

Chris Crutchfield was a great offensive defender. He started his SHL career with the rookie of the year award. And was hipped youngster on the rise. During his short career he also got 2 nomination for the Scott Stevens award for the best defender (S32 & S35) and made the all star team 3 times. Still can remember when he was trying to get a challenge cup and was traded from New England (at the time not in a playoff spot) to the Toronto North Stars. Just to see New England getting their shit together and eliminating Toronto in the playoffs and going all the way to the finals. (They lost it against Texas). Even more memorized the trade that brought Crutchfields FA rights to Portland for Cartier (1 rounder) + S38 POR 1st and he not signing there. Chrutchfield short career was probably a big reason why he never got the inducted into the hall of fame. A few more good season would have brought him there for sure.

3. Minnesota Chiefs - Scotty Reay
SHL Seasons: S27-S31 (5 season)
Teams: Minnesota Chiefs
Games played: 250
Goals: 22
Assists: 29
Points: 51
+/-: -36
PIM: 26
Hits: 104
Shots blocked: 32
Minutes played: 4114
Challenge Cups: 0
Awards: 0
All Star Teams: 0

That's our first bust of the draft, drafted as number three and never was near of the SHL level of play. Today we know what was still available after him, Minnesota didn't know at the time . They would have had much more luck with another player.

4. Los Angeles Panthers (via Buffalo Stampede) - Montel V. Porter
SHL Seasons: s30 - S34 (4 seasons)
Teams: Los Angeles Panthers -> Buffalo Stampede
Games played: 200
Goals: 0
Assists: 14
Points: 14
+/-: -7
PIM: 104
Hits: 214
Shots blocked: 96
Minutes played: 1621
Challenge Cups: 0
Awards:0
All Star Teams:0

MVP was another big bust of the draft. 3 years after he got drafted he finally hit the ice with the big guys, but he never was ready for it. After 4 years his SHL career was over.

5. Minnesota Chiefs (via Edmonton Blizzard) - Lord Vader
SHL Seasons: S27-S40 (14 Seasons)
Teams: Minnesota Chiefs -> Texas Renegades
Games played: 700
Goals: 79
Assists: 377
Points: 456
+/-: -8
PIM: 914
Hits: 2044
Shots blocked: 977
Minutes played: 17107
Challenge Cups: 1 (S36 with Texas)
Awards: 0
All Star Teams: All Rookie team (S27) 2nd All-Star Team (S39, S40), 3rd All-Star Team (S38)

Lord Vader was one of the better players in this draft and was an outstanding player for the Texas Renegades. Sadly his personal achievements wasn't too great. He got two Scott Stevens nominations (S39 & S40) but never won an award. That's probably the main reason why we didn't see his name in the hall of fame. He made it into Austria's Hall of Fame and also got named Austria's home rink named after him.

6. Buffalo Stampede (via Los Angeles Panthers) - Hannu Hameleinen
SHL Seasons: 0
Hannu Hameleinen never played a game in the SHL. He retired early.

7. New England Wolfpack - Raven Silverwing
SHL Seasons: S29 - S41 (13 seasons)
Teams: New England Wolfpack
Games played: 650
Goals: 256
Assists: 285
Points: 541
+/-: +101
PIM: 169
Hits: 355
Shots blocked: 157
Minutes played: 13624
Challenge Cups: 3 (S30, S31 & S33)
Awards: 0
All Star Teams: 2nd All-Star team (S33)

Raven Silverwing entered the SHL as one of the best goal scorers from the juniors. He had a rough first season in the SHL but exploded in season two and never looked back. He finished his career with 3 Challenge Cups after 13 seasons of hockey. Maybe he could have played one or two seasons more and get his name on another cup.

8. Manhattan Rage (via Texas Renegades) - Selena Bauer
SHL Seasons: S28-S39 (didn't played in S32, S33, S36 & S37) (8 seasons)
Teams: Manhattan Rage -> Portland Admirals -> Hamilton Steelhawks -> West Kendall Platoons -> Texas Renegades
Games played: 170
Wins: 66
Lost: 85
OTL: 19
Minutes played: 10310
Goals against: 534
Shots faced: 5647
Challenge Cups: 0
Awards:0
All Star Teams: 0
Selena Bauer had a promising start, after one year as the Manhattan Rage back up goalie she took over the starter job before she lost it again in the following season. She was a starting goalie in her stints in Portland an Hamilton. But was most of the time a back up goalie. Not the career you hope for the goalie that got taken first in the draft, even worse when you know what you could have get.

9. Calgary Dragons - Shane Gagner
SHL Seasons: S29 - S38 (10 seasons)
Teams: Calgary Dragons
Games played: 500
Goals: 138
Assists: 200
Points: 338
+/-: +68
PIM: 252
Hits: 773
Shots blocked: 97
Minutes played: 10411
Challenge Cups: 2 (S29, S32)
Awards: 0
All Star Teams: All-Rookie Team (S29)

Shane Gagner is another player of this class that retired to early. He played his hole career for one of the best franchise in the league and put up some solid seasons in Calgary. Gagner was a great pick at 9 for the Dragons and for sure one of the better players out of this draft.

10. West Kendall Platoon - Matt Lewis-Flood
SHL Seasons: S27 - S37 (11 seasons)
Teams: West Kendall Platoon
Games played: 362
Wins: 194
Lost: 139
OTL: 29
Minutes played: 21912
Goals against: 979
Shots faced: 10134
Challenge Cups: 0
Awards: 2 (1x John McBride Trophy S33, 1x Mike Honcho Trophy S33)
All Star Teams: 1x 2nd All-Star Team (S33)

Close the flood gates. Matt Lewis-Flood played his entire SHL career in West Kendall. After 3 years as their back up goalie he finally took over the starting job in S30 and was their going to guy till he retired in S37. Flood had an outstanding seasons in season 33 where he took home 2 of the 3 awards he was nominated. The Award he didn't won was the Ron Mexico. Looking back Flood was a good goalie and draft pick for the Platoons.

11. Toronto North Stars - Dane Rowe
SHL Seasons: S29 - S39 (11 seasons)
Teams: Toronto North Stars
Games played: 550
Goals: 86
Assists: 162
Points: 248
+/-: -76
PIM: 203
Hits: 252
Shots blocked: 99
Minutes played: 9175
Challenge Cups: 1 (S35)
Awards: 0
All Star Teams: All-Rookie Team (S29)

Dan Rowe is one more player of the draft that played only for one team through his career. He never was a spectacular player for the North Stars, but a good bottom 6 player.

12. Winnipeg Jets - Lukas Berger
SHL Seasons: S28 - S37 (10 seasons)
Teams: Winnipeg Jets
Games played: 438
Wins: 222
Lost: 167
OTL: 49
Minutes played: 26605
Goals against: 1349
Shots faced: 13369
Challenge Cups: 1
Awards: 0
All Star Teams: 1 All-Rookie Team (S28)
Lukas Berger played his entire career in Winnipeg and he always was the starter for them. Berger had some solid season but never could win an award or made an All-Star team after his rookie season. But he had the privilege to go out with the ultimate price, winning the Challenge Cup in his last career game.

13. Seattle Riot - Sim Browski
SHL Seasons: S31 - S33 (3 season)
Teams: Seattle Riot
Games played: 150
Goals: 4
Assists: 4
Points: 8
+/-: -16
PIM: 39
Hits: 139
Shots blocked: 4
Minutes played:746
Challenge Cups: 0
Awards:0
All Star Teams:0

Sim Browski was one of the big bust in this draft. The books says he played 3 season, but there are only stats for one season. That's the most interesting thing to say about him.

14. New England Wolfpack (via Hamilton Steelhawks) - Riley McDonald
SHL Seasons: S29 (1 season)
Teams: New England Wolfpack
Games played: 50
Goals: 2
Assists: 7
Points: 9
+/-: -5
PIM: 0
Hits: 0
Shots blocked: 3
Minutes played: 503
Challenge Cups: 0
Awards: 0
All Star Teams: 0

Riley McDonald entered the league in Season 29 and left it after one season. How was New England able to be such a power house in the early 30 season with such draft luck.

Round 2
15. Portland Admirals - Maximilian Wächter
SHL Seasons: S28 - S46 (19 seasons)
Teams: Portland Admirals -> Buffalo Stampede -> Los Angeles Panthers
Games played: 950
Goals: 279
Assists: 454
Points: 733
+/-: +40
PIM: 803
Hits: 2572
Shots blocked: 228
Minutes played: 20104
Challenge Cups: 0
Awards: 1x Anton Razov Trophy (S41)
All Star Teams: All-Rookie Team (S28), 2x 2nd All-Star team (S41, S42)

Maximilian Wächter was one of the big steals of the draft. Portland's scouting team did an amazing job grabbing him in the 2nd round. Maximilian was a beast on the ice for the biggest part of his career. He was well known by the other teams defenders, because he was never shy to use his body and throw some big hits on them on the fore check. With his physical presents he was able to make room for his team and some good plays, that brought him 2 nominations for the Jeff Dar Award. After many years in the league he slowed down physically and started scoring more goals. Maximilian Wächter is a member of the hall of fame even if he never won a challenge cup, but for his long career and for being one of the very few true power forwards at that time.

16. Toronto North Stars (via Manhattan Rage) - Kylo Ren
SHL Seasons: 0
Kylo Ren never played a single game in the SHL.

17. Texas Renegades (via New England Wolfpack, via Minnesota Chiefs) - Alexander Charlyb'y
SHL Seasons: S30 - S35 (6 seasons)
Teams: Texas Renegades
Games played: 300
Goals: 28
Assists: 40
Points: 68
+/-: -64
PIM: 81
Hits: 301
Shots blocked: 27
Minutes played: 4318
Challenge Cups: 0
Awards: 0
All Star Teams: 0

Alexander Charlyb'y SHL career was 6 seasons long. His rookie season was a good one, but after that he starts falling down. But he will always be remembered as Mr. Face Off.

18. Edmonton Blizzard (via Texas Renegades, via Buffalo Stampede) - Jaxson Reynolds
SHL Seasons: S28 - S40 (13 seasons)
Teams: Edmonton Blizzards -> Los Angeles Panthers
Games played: 650
Goals: 178
Assists: 198
Points: 376
+/-: +67
PIM: 106
Hits: 282
Shots blocked: 82
Minutes played: 11867
Challenge Cups: 1 (S28 Edmonton Blizzards)
Awards: 0
All Star Teams:0

Jaxson Reynolds had a solid career for a 2n round draft pick. And he was much better than many of the guys that got drafted ahead of him. He was once nominated for the Aidan Richan award.

19. Portland Admirals (via Edmonton Blizzard) - Riley Mason
SHL Seasons: S28 - S30
Teams: Portland Admirals
Games played: 150
Goals: 9
Assists: 8
Points: 17
+/-: -42
PIM: 15
Hits: 32
Shots blocked: 3
Minutes played:2189
Challenge Cups: 0

Riley Mason only played 3 years in the SHL. It wasn't a very successful time for him and it wasn't easy on a rebuilding Portland Admirals team after the fire sale they made because of the tampering scandal.

20. Buffalo Stampede (via Los Angeles Panthers) - Arik Mikita
SHL Seasons: 0
One more Buffalo player that never hit the SHL ice.

21. West Kendall Platoon (via Los Angeles Panthers, via New England Wolfpack) - Brian Wade
SHL Seasons: 0
This guy also never played in the SHL

22. Toronto North Stars (via Edmonton Blizzard, via Texas Renegades) - William Fedorov
SHL Seasons: S29 - S36 (8 Seasons)
Teams: Portland Admirals -> Los Angeles Panthers -> West Kendall Platoon

PIM: 283
Hits: 519
Shots blocked: 322
Minutes played: 5916

William Fedorov is another guy that had a great rookie season, but never was able to get back to this numbers and after 8 seasons he retired and left the league.

23. Los Angeles Panthers (via Calgary Dragons) - Sesugh Uhaa
SHL Seasons: S28 - S 32 (5 seasons)
Teams: Los Angeles Panthers

The talent was getting low at this time of the draft but a few real good pices would have been there, but Los Angeles went with Sesugh Uhaa and got 5 seasons out of him. Much more than many players played that got drafted before him.

24. Calgary Dragons (via West Kendall Platoon) - Reinis Aumeisters
SHL Seasons: S30 - S42 (13 seasons)
Teams: Manhattan Rage -> Portland Admirals -> Edmonton Blizzards -> Calgary Dragons -> Seatlle Riot

Reinis Aumeisters played for 5 teams during his journey throw the SHL. He had his best years during his time in Edmonton where he put up respectable numbers. Looking back he could have easily drafted higher than 24th.

25. Manhattan Rage (via Toronto North Stars) - Wendell Luna
SHL Seasons: S28 - S38 (11 seasons)
Teams: Manhattan Rage- West Kendall Platoon
Games played: 550

Wendell Luna was a solid defender in the League. Manhattan picked good at this point of the draft.

26. New England Wolfpack (via Winnipeg Jets) - Dickie Pecker
SHL Seasons: S29 - S37 (9 seasons)
Teams: New Englan Wolfpack -> Buffalo Stampede
Games played: 450

PIM: 214
Hits: 436

Minutes played: 7252
Challenge Cups: 0

Dickie Pecker had a long career for such a late pick. But with -115 everyone and especially him should be happy that it ended after 9 seasons.

27. Seattle Riot - Eugene Feist
SHL Seasons: S31 - S38 (8 seasons)
Teams: Hamilton Steelhawks -> Portland Admirals -> Minnesota Chiefs -> Buffalo Stampede
Games played: 400

Eugene Feist never got more than 19 points in a season, he was always a bottom 6 player and looking at his +/- with -122 he probably was not the best on the defensive work.

28. Seattle Riot (via Hamilton Steelhawks) - Bernie Sanders
SHL Seasons: 0
Bernie Sanders never played a game in the SHL

Round 3
29. Winnipeg Jets (via Toronto North Stars via Portland Admirals) - Leo Yakimov

David Dvorak only played two seasons in the SHL, but never a game for the team that drafted him. A short and not remarkable career.

36. Portland Admirals (via Texas Renegades) - pass
OK a pass on a traded pick. Not the worst decision.

37. West Kendall Platoon (via Calgary Dragons) - Julius Sylvia
SHL Seasons: S32 - S36 (4 seasons, becaus he didn't played in S34)

He only played one season as roster filler in Texas.

39. Minnesota Chiefs (via Toronto North Stars) - FORFEITED
that's the 2nd FORFEITED pick for the Chiefs in this draft. They have been pretty lucky with that.

There are a lot of passes till pick 46 of the Buffalo Stampede

40. Winnipeg Jets - pass
41. Hamilton Steelhawks (via Seattle Riot) - pass
42. Hamilton Steelhawks - pass

Round 4
43. Portland Admirals - pass

One seasons as roster filler for an expansion franchise that wasn't good at the time. Pretty all you can say about him.

47. Texas Renegades (via Edmonton Blizzard) - Zach Zyvleski
SHL Seasons: 0
never played a game in the SHL.

48. Los Angeles Panthers - pass
49. Texas Renegades (via New England Wolfpack) - pass

Little surprised that the player that was taken last in the draft was able to get a paycheck for 8 season in the SHL. Pretty sure he always or at least most of the time was player number 20 to reach the roster criteria.

That was the S27 draft class. It was really funny to go back in time and look how my class did compared to my own player. Little bit shocked how few Challenge cups we did get all together and how short the most careers have been. With only one hall of fame player in this class, it was a weak draft class. Potential was there but almost never paid out.
