A look at the current Draft Class (2x First Media)
#1
(This post was last modified: 08-18-2020, 10:36 AM by krazko.)

The season has started and is in the final stretch before the play-offs, the draft class has (hopefully) gotten settled with their teams and played around 35 games. The SHL draft is nearing for our hopeful prospects. What better time than this to have an initial look on how the prospects have started their careers and how they have developed thus far.

How have our new prospects developed, has anyone pulled ahead of everyone else?

During this deep dive in the basic stats we will have a look at the players drafted during the 3 first rounds of the SMJHL entry draft. We will also have a look at any outliers drafted in the later rounds.

Players will be compared to mainly the draft class, but where it’s notable, to the entire league.

As of now, the average TPE for the Draft class is 226.

Round 1
1:  Citadelles Quebec City Citadelles  - Zdenko Beranek - @ztevans
The first overall pick and Slovakian born Zdenko Beranek has amassed 242 TPE, with that he is in the upper middle part of the draft class (24th) in terms of TPE gain.
He has had an average ice time of almost 15 minutes per game.
With the ice team given he has produced 5 goals and 9 assists he has reached a top 10 ranking for points done by rookies. But as productive as he is up front, there is some to wish for on the defensive side with a -17 in +/- for the season.
2:  Scarecrows St. Louis Scarecrows (via VAN) - Xavier Doom - @JKortesi81

The Icelandic born Xavier Doom has reached 241 TPE and is with that also an upper middle of the pack development (26th).
Average ice time of 11 minutes per game he’s had a good season so far with no major negative stats. He’s reach 13 points in the season, 4 goals and 9 assists.

3:  Timber Maine Timber  - Lucas Johansson - @JR95

Swedish born Lucas Johansson has reached 235 TPE and with that is bang on the middle of the draft class (33rd) in terms of TPE development.
He’s been a solid defensive piece for Maine Timber and is one of only 11 rookies who has been marked down for a short-handed point. Lucas is also the rookie with the most short-handed ice time.

4:  Battleborn Nevada Battleborn  - Vili Afalava - @Wasty

Vili Afalava is from the somewhat unheard-of hockey country of Tonga. He has 210 TPE which puts him at a 49th place which is towards the lower end of the draft class in terms of TPE development.
He is one of only 6 rookies who have not scored a single goal, but it’s not offensively where is has been an asset. With 22:15 time on ice per game he is the rookie with the most ice time per game (8th most in the league). With the huge amount of ice time for the team with the most goals against, his +/- has suffered. Standing at -22, (3-way tie for worst of all rookies, 5 way tie for worst in the league) the +/- has a lot to wish for, but he has been a defensive juggernaut for his Nevada Battleborn. 79 hits (2nd most for rookies), 3 fights (but no wins yet), 73 blocked shots (3rd among rookies) and 24 Take-aways which is most of all rookies and 10th in the league. While his playstyle has cost him 23 penalty minutes, he is evidentially a key piece for the Nevada defence.

5:  Kraken Carolina Kraken (via DET) - Aleksander Kozlov - @FlappyGiraffe

The Russian born Center has the most TPE in the class at 259. With close to 11 minutes of ice-time per game, he has reached 10 points, 5 goals, 5 assists. He is one of 6 rookie players who has scored a goal while short-handed. He is currently standing on +6 in +/- but does not have any other stat that’s an outlier compared to the draft class.

6:  Falcons  Detroit Falcons (via ANC)  - Evangelos Giannopoulos - @JSS

Canadian born Evangelos Giannopoulos has 245 TPE and is among the top 20 (18th) TPE wise for the class. With close to 20 minutes ice time per game he is an important player for the Falcons. With 9 points, (1 goal, 9 assist) he’s at +/- -18 for the season. With that said, he has a solid record of 68 defensive game rating (just shy of the top 3) and an important player in the Detroit boxplay (5th most time on ice while shorthanded for the team).

7:  Raptors Colorado Raptors  - Rock Strongo - @Leafs4ever
Rock Strongo is our second Canadian and has reached 254 TPE so far which puts him in 10th place for the rookie development. He has had a productive season offensively with 9 goals (2nd most among rookies) and 7 assists putting him at 16 points and a 5th place point wise. The offensive power can be seen in the Offensive game rating where averages at 60 (4th among rookies). Rock is one of 5 players with 00:00 average ice time while playing short-handed

8:  Whalers Vancouver Whalers (via STL) - Dee Centerman IV - @grok
The British national Dee Centerman IV with 251 TPE which is 14th among rookies. He has so far had an average season with no major notable outliers compared to the draft class. He does play a lot of box-play for his Vancouver with an average of 02:13 while also taking quite a number of penalty minutes himself (20 minutes, 7th most for rookies).

9:  Battleborn  Nevada Battleborn (via NLB) - Phillip Weaver - @W19eaver
The Canadian goaltender Philip Weaver was the first goalie picked in the draft. He has reached 246 TPE which is most among the rookie goaltenders (it would be the 18th place overall, but for this comparison I have excluded goalies from the other players). While Weaver has been the primary choice of goalie for Nevada this season, he has had a tough time so far and has only won 8 out of 36 games he’s played. Letting in 4.23 goals per game, he has got his work cut out for him going forward. With that said, he still has a save % of 0.901 and a Game rating of 67 (which would put him 3rd among all rookies) so Weaver has done his best to keep Nevada in many games.
Weaver is the only rookie goalie that has posted a shut-out this season.
He has faced the most shots and made most saves of all goalies in the league and also played the most minutes. So, while the numbers do look bleak, Weaver has done a good job so far in the net for the Battleborn.

10:  Armada  Anchorage Armada (via DET) - Vladmir Petrov - @Muford

Russian born Vladmir Petrov (first of 7 Petrov’s in the draft) has gotten 256 TPE putting him in 6th place among the rookies. Vladmir Petrov has been a shooting machine and fired 61 shots thus far and scored on 6 occasions. He has also assisted on 7 goals putting him on a solid 13 points. He has continuously played good offensively and has an average offensive game rating of 58 while playing on average 12 minutes per game.

11:  Falcons Detroit Falcons (via ANA) - Yngve Simonsson - @JumpierPegasus

The Swedish left wing Yngve Simonsson is sitting at 255 TPE and 1 point and place (7th) behind Vladmir Petrov. He has fired even more shots than aforementioned Petrov and has recorded 66 shots on goal so far and is with that the rookie that has been recorded for most shots so far. He has with all his shots, scored 5 goals, and assisted to 7 goals. His offensive rating is 2nd highest for our draft class at 62. Notable with this is that he has an average of 00:00 time on ice for Powerplays while still playing 14 minutes per game.

12:  Whalers Vancouver Whalers (via CAR) - KnockedOut ByOvechkin - @ddrector

Russian right wing KnockedOut ByOvechkin has 254 TPE and with that a 10th place in the draft class.
He is only receiving just shy of 9 minutes of ice-time per game and it does show in the stats as he has only scored 3 and assisted to 2 goals (only 2 players with fewer assists). He has reached a +/- of 3 which puts him in the top 10.

Round 2
13:  Whalers Vancouver Whalers  - Sarah Burke - @Kyamprac
Player Profile

Sarah Burke is a Canadian Defenceman, she has amassed 255 TPE so far which puts her in 7th place.
Contrary to ByOvechkin she is receiving heaps of ice time and is averaging 17 minutes per game and is also playing a lot of short-handed situations with 01:45. She is not one to miss the opportunity given and is one of only 2 players to have both scored and assisted to a goal while playing short-handed. In total she has 9 points, 3 goals and 6 assists and has a positive +/- with 5.

14:  Timber Maine Timber  - Calvin Hobbes - @krazko
The Swedish center Calvin Hobbes has reached 237 TPE and a 29th place.
Where Lucas Johansson has been a solid defensive winger for Maine Timbers, Calvin has been producing offensively in the power-play opportunities he has been presented with. Calvin has been noted for 2 goals and 5 assists with a man advantage (both 2nd best among the rookies) noting a total of 7 power-play points (3rd among rookies). In total he has scored 4 goals and assisted 8. Calvin is one of 2 rookies (5 players in total) that have won 100% of their fights this season, all of them have only had 1 fight.

15:  Berserkers Newfoundland Berserkers (via DET) - Jonas Kahnwaki - @Festinator

German defender Jonas Kahnwaki has reached 245 TPE and an 18th place among the rookies.
He’s playing for the very dominant Newfoundland Berserkers and it shows in the stats. He is the rookie with the best +/- standing at 18. He’s been shooting 2nd most of the rookies with 65 shots on goal. He has been awarded with 6 goals and 5 assists. His offensive game rating of 58 puts him in 7th place among the rookies.

16:  Armada Anchorage Armada  -  slava petrov - @ckroyal92

The Russian born (but playing for Norway internationally) winger slava petrov is the second Petrov drafted. He has reached 258 TPE which is 2nd most in the draft class.
Marked down for 4 goals and 8 assists and +4 he’s been very good offensively, with an average offensive game rating of 60 (4th) and equal game rating (6th). He’s seen very little ice time during special teams and not played any power-play minutes. He is notably one of 5 rookies without any penalty minutes at all

17:  Raptors Colorado Raptors  - Marcel Laflamme - @HydroRaven

Canadian Goaltender Marcel Laflamme (total 230 TPE, 3rd among goalies, 36th overall) has not seen as much game time as the earlier picked goalie Weaver. Laflamme has only started 4 games (239 minutes game time) but has won 3 out of the 4 games. Laflamme has posted an average save % of 0.906 which is the highest of our 4 rookie netminders. With a game rating of 66 he’s tied for 2nd place among the 4 goalies.

18:  Outlaws Anaheim Outlaws (via DET, via CAR, via STL) - Edward Teach - @biggestshlchad
Our first American and third goaltender is Edward Teach who has reached 236 TPE and a 2nd place for goalies (31st overall).
Much like Laflamme Teach is not playing the started minutes and has won 4 and lost 5 games. With a total play time of 519 minutes. He’s got a save % of 0.888 and a game rating of 60.

19:  Battleborn Nevada Battleborn (via QCC) - Tanjiro Kamado - @Andy
The Italian defenceman Tanjiro Kamado has reached a 17th place with 247 TPE.
Kamado is playing almost as much as his teammate Afalava, playing on average 22 minutes per game which is also 2nd most of the rookies. He has an impressive defensive game rating of 68 (4th) and an overall game rating of 62 (3rd). Despite the heroic defensive effort he has -19 in +/-. It’s also not all great defensively as Kamado is the player with the most Give-aways of the rookies with 30. Kamado is the 2nd rookie to have both a goal and an assist playing short-handed and the rookie with the most short-handed points. He is also one of 4 to have points both while playing short-handed and during power-play. In total the Italian has 9 points, 2 goals and 7 assists.

20:  Citadelles Quebec City Citadelles (via NBB) - Jasper Maximov - @enigmatic

The Ukrainian defenceman Jasper Maximov has 236 TPE so far which puts him in 31st place.
Maximov is playing close to 20 minutes per game (6th most) and is getting a lot of ice time during power-plays (02:36, 3rd most of rookies). With the opportunities provided in power-plays he has scored 2 goals so far which is 2nd most of the draft class. He’s also assisted 3 goals for a total of 5 power-play goals which puts him in 4th for the draft class.
Defensively he has been lacking a bit with -20 in +/- and 24 give-aways.

21:  Outlaws Anaheim Outlaws  - "Long" John Donair - @GCool

Russian born right wing "Long" John Donair is ranked 39th with 227 TPE (almost bang on the average TPE for the class.) Despite the average TPE he is in 2nd place for rookie goal-scoring with his 9 goals (1 scored while short-handed). The goals are much thanks to his impressive shooting % which is 19.57% (4th) Donair has also contributed with 7 assists totalling 16 points (5th for rookies). While he has been impressive offensively, he has only had an average defensive rating of 48 (among the worst 5 in the draft class)

22:  Scarecrows St. Louis Scarecrows (via CAR) - Zbynek Dobrovsky - @iStegosauruz

The Czech right wing Zbynek Dobrovsky has with his 245 TPE reach 18th place for the draft class.
Dobrovsky has achieved 8 points so far, 4 goals and 4 assists. He’s not had any stats that are outliers compared to the draft class and he is in the upper half for almost all rookie stats.

23:  Knights Kelowna Knights (via DET, via NLB) - Kynwyl Pearce - @Shmurph

The second British player in the draft class, Kynwyl Pearce has 243 TPE and with that he’s ranked 23rd.
He’s been an offensive force to reckon with and has already scored 8 goals and done 9 assists totalling 17 points (3rd best rookie). He’s also the second-best rookie in +/- with 11. This while not playing powerplay.

24:  Citadelles Quebec City Citadelles (via KEL) - Teylora Petrov - @"Panda"

Teylora Petrov is the third Petrov drafted, Teylora Petrov has, like slava petrov, reached 258 TPE which is tied second for the draft class. While Teylora has a -16 +/- Teylora is playing second most short-handed of the rookies and is doing a great job defensively, 18 take-aways and 33 blocked shots, with a defensive rating of 63 (placing 9th for rookies). While Teylora is doing great defensively, offensively the rating is the worst of the class at 46. Teylora has still been noted for 1 goal and 9 assists. Notably Teylora has not taken a single penalty minute yet.

Round 3
26:  Citadelles Quebec City Citadelles (via MET) - David Danielson - @WildfireMicro

The last goalie, for the 3 rounds, is also the second American goaltender David Danielson who has reached 201 TPE putting last among all the goalies and him on the lower part (55th) in the draft class,.
With close to 1400 minutes played, 24 games played, 9 wins, 14 losses and 1 overtime loss Danielson has a save % of 0.901 and a goal against average of 3.88

27:  Kraken Carolina Kraken (via DET) - Adrian Ayers - @gordieboom
The Scottish winger Adrian Ayers has reached 237 TPE and a 29th place.
He’s playing close to 13 minutes per game and has thus far scored 3 goals and 10 assists totalling 13 points. He’s reached an offensive game rating of 61 which is 3rd best for the class.

28:  Armada Anchorage Armada  - Michael Withecheck - @sakrosankt

Austrian defenceman Michael Withecheck has reached a 16th place with his 248 TPE.
Withecheck is receiving lots of ice time, especially in the power-play where he has the most ice time of all the rookies with 03:38 (10th overall in the league). He’s totalling just over 20 minutes of ice time per game which is 5th most in the draft class. The ice-time given to Withecheck is not lost as he’s scored the most points in the draft class with 18 points (jointly with Vermette). 5 goals and 13 assists (11th and 1st place respectively). He’s also very productive in the powerplay with 1 goal of his goals and 7 assist coming during the man advantage play, both best in class. His +/- is 3rd best at 7. While he has been highly effective offensively he has caused 24 give-aways which is tied for 2nd most of the rookies.

29:  Raptors Colorado Raptors  - William Hunt - @DachtorFeelgood

The American center William Hunt has only gained 4 TPE totalling 159 and 3rd least TPE in the class.
The low amount of TPE shows as he is among the worst in class for many of the stats.
As he’s only played 10 games, no interesting conclusions or stats can really be taken from this.

30:  Whalers Vancouver Whalers (via STL) - Rikki Petrov - @"AndrewWarren13"

The 4th Petrov in the draft is Russian Rikki Petrov who has reached 252 TPE for a 12th place.
Rikki has assisted to 12 goals (2nd best in class) and scored 2 goals for 14 points total. Rikki is one of the 4 players that been noted for a point in both power-play and box-play.

31:  Berserkers Newfoundland Berserkers (via QCC) - Vaseline Podcalzone - @bdu754

The Russian winger Vaseline Podcalzone has amassed 233 TPE and a 34th position.
He’s scored 2 goals and assisted 5 for a total of 7 points.
Podalzone is the active player with the least blocked shots, with only 3 blocked shots.
In his defence can be said that he is only playing 9 minutes per game and it’s for the very dominant Newfoundland Berserkers.

32:  Battleborn Nevada Battleborn  - Alexis Vermette - @treant

The Canadian winger Alexis Vermette has reached 242 TPE and a 24th rank for TPE gain.
Vermette is in tied first place for most points scored with 18 (8 goals and 10 assists.) Alexis has seen relatively high amount of ice time during the powerplay (01:51 – 5th) and has been productive in the play with a man advantage. He has scored 1 goal and assisted to 3 for a total 4 points (5th among the rookies).
Even with his impressive point total he has a +/- of -21 (4th worst of the rookies), the lack of defensive thinking can be seen in the defensive game rating at 48. Vermette is also one of the 5 rookies with no time on ice while playing short-handed.

33:  Whalers Vancouver Whalers (via ANA) - Valitteri Kauppinen - @Pythonic

Finnish winger Valitteri Kauppinen has reached 244 TPE and is with that just shy of 20th place among the rookies with a 22nd place.
Kauppinen has scored 5 goals and assisted 4 for 9 points total.
Kauppinen hasn’t done much else to stand out among the class so far.
He is also one of the 5 rookies without and ice time when his team is playing short handed.

34:  Falcons Detroit Falcons (via CAR) - Daedalus James - @littleb
The Canadian center Daedalus James has reached 236 TPE and is with that 31st in the rookie TPE standing.
While James has not done much noise offensively and only scored 2 points (2 assist) which is at the bottom of the rookie scoring. He has been a safe player only causing 5 give-aways.
James has seen limited playtime with only 09:02 per game.

35:  Falcons Detroit Falcons (via NLB) - Oliver Setzinger - @EricC11

Austrian defenceman Oliver Setzinger has only gained 27 TPE putting him at 182 TPE total, with that he’s bottom 5 for TPE gained in the class.
With Setzinger going inactive he’s only played 2 games and there’s not much that can be taken from the stats.
With 2 games and 2 points, he’s the only rookie with a point per game.
A fun note though is that when he did play, he played extremely well and had a game rating of 68, offensive rating of 65 and defensive rating of 69.

36:  Knights Kelowna Knights  - Patrik Money - @Mooney

The Irish left wing Patrik Money has reached 241 TPE and a 26th place among the rookies.
With just shy of 9 minutes of ice time per game Money has been recorded for 4 goals and 7 assists for 11 points.
Money has otherwise had an average season not having any stat that’s an outlier compared to the rest of the draft class.

That concludes the more detailed view on the first 3 rounds of the SMJHL draft. There are however a few interesting stats that were not included, such as:
  • Boris Petrov (@LimJahey): the defenceman who was drafted #46 by Quebec City Citadelles and has reached 245 TPE (18th) Petrov has gotten 163 penalty minutes, that’s more than the following 5 most penalized players combined (they reach 151 together) and he’s just beaten when you combine the 6th player as they then have 171 minutes. On top of that, the’s been in 11 fights, won 6 of them (both most in the class) and 2nd overall in the entire league. He’s not only fighting, he’s hitting more than the next 3 most frequent hitters combined (Petrov 231 compared to combined 230). With all his penalty minutes he’s still playing 18:17 per game.
  • Raivo Helminen (@jRuutu): the Nevada Battleborn forward with 250 TPE (15th), he has the most goals at 10 goals and the scary shooting percentage of 30.30%
  • Jeff Nips (@MisObvious): the St Louis Scarecrows forward with only 157 TPE (2nd least) who has scored 7 goals and has a shooting accuracy of 21.21%

Finally the ranked list by TPE with the draft pick # with which the player was chosen (picks that were “PASSED” are still counted as a pick, hence the jump in Draft position numbers)

Not drafted indicated the player is not included in the Draft list.

All Data was taken Monday 17/08 prior to the first sim of the day.
