Hello SHL,

The 5 of us were talking about we realized our join date was all basically the same date, so I have dubbed us the Quintuplets. We joined 2 years ago today and have all done various things and thought it would be fun to do a joint Ask Us Anything post. A little about all of us first, then you can fire away the questions.

: If you don't know me: I got drafted by Lethbridge and after 3 seasons there, I moved to Toronto where I'm currently one "half" of the team captains (hi Mika!) and also the oldest active member on the team. My player was the first goalie in the SHL that made it to 2k+ TPE. In our first season Julio and I both got jobs as graphics graders and now we run the department together - I make tons of sigs all the time. Inbetween seasons I'm the Co-Fed Head of Finland. Oh and important trivia - I helped with the Lethbridge > Newfoundland rebrand (Which Corey was thankful for).

: Oh, it's me Corey, most people probably know me as the Commissioner for about a year and a head officer member for a couple years. I joined the site in S46/47 with all these fine folks, was drafted to Anaheim, then off to Chicago, which nobody has still heard from. I've been in Head Office, Commish, Updater, File stuff, helped transition from STHS to FHM, Co-GM for the NL Berserkers for just under 2 years, and um, I'm sure a couple other choice phrases from people.

@hotdog Inferno

: I (hotdog btw) spent 2 seasons on Anchorage, was NEW co-GM for 8 seasons, then was selected to start an expansion team - the Atlanta Inferno (estd. S56). PT head for 10 seasons (that's too many seasons!). Eko van Otter is a 1 time Jeff Dar award winner and a Buffalo Stampede legend.

: *SD gets to write this one* Cowman is Julio/Julio is Cowman. Julio is a co-head for gfx grading, he is also responsible for both the Atlanta Inferno logo and well as the Newfoundland Bersekerkers logo. He did want to add his claim to fame was the CGY cum banner, so there is that.

: I was on Anaheim and then New England, always stuck with the team that drafted me; once was an updater and auditor but I got lazy; currently SMJHL pick tracker, fantasy manager, historian; currently run a PT tracking system to warn users who haven't finished tasks, *also was on team USA by default but defected to DACH/Switzerland.

Welp that's us, oh also all 5 of us are in the 2k TPE club, with 2 of us being in the top 5 of all time for TPE. We are all in crazy different time zones, so responses might be slow, but you should ask us anything. Ask a group question, individual, or w/e we don't care, just let's have some fun.

Carpy - Helping @ml002 rebuild Toronto from being the only active member to - as of now - a team full of actives. Hopefully a Cup can be added soon.

SD - Winning a cup in Newfoundland as a GM. Building that team from inactivity to the powerhouse locker room and team it is, I think that's the biggest one for me personally.

hotdog - The honest answer is being selected for an expansion team - that I was chosen feels representative of the figure i've set out to be on this site so it was nice to be rewarded like that. A more fun answer is beating @SDCore in the S47 TPE race even though he always got more TPE from mock drafts when i got the GM average

Julio - I’ve had a weird career path. My rookie year we won the challenge cup, and I was the only player on the roster under 1000 TPE, and the next lowest was ~1500, so it was very evident that I could not have played a smaller role in that accomplishment. Keygan and Tommy have been great GM’s fostering an active locker room and on ice success, and finding useful roles for all levels of TPE and “role”. Through drafting and trading Edmonton always feels like the championship window is open. But after becoming a higher TPE player on the roster and the team not having matching success, I’ve had a bit of imposter syndrome. So getting my first first-team all star nod was really good for my ego, but I’m ready to win another one.
Other highlights include getting my first 5 on a signature, getting gold in IIHF after being in the bullpen for ~3 seasons,

Slap - off the top of my head I'd say being a significant part of earning the S53 President's Trophy

milhouse is most definitely a meme, milhouse was selected as one of the top 5 "hot new memes to watch in 2021" in Meme Magazine's December 2020 issue.

hot dog - I had joined the PT team when there was an opening, as it seemed like an interesting creative avenue on the site and i was eager for any job at the start. Izzy planned on stepping down, and i originally said no... but with enough time, I eventually caved and accepted the job. it was a lot of responsibility, which I didn't really like, but Izzy had things set up very well so it was a pretty easy transition. as I got more comfortable there I was able to branch out more and do my own stuff, but the state of the department when I took it over made it seamless.

Slap - Maybe, gotta try it to find out. Honestly whoever would have drafted me would be who I'd play for, I'm a team first guy. I'm on a Home Town Discount with no NTC, so as much as I like NEW if the team eventually decides trading me would be in their favor I'm all for it for the sake of their future

Julio - The SHL really discourages secondary payments, whether its jerseys or custom team swag. But if this is something of value that you hold as a player, I could see that drawing a little more attention from teams with a gap in that attribute on their roster. I know it's not true, but I believe graphics contributors are more popular/valuable because their interest in the league grows the immersion level for others, and to have someone in your locker room like that means a little more exposure for you and the teammates. Also, the idea of "exclusive" anime pics is funny to me. they're technically not cannon unless made by the original studio, which would mean that there are some deleted scenes that the animators put together, didn't air, and then "sold". I've been slowly dipping my toes into commissioned Rule 34 material (as an artist. which probably makes it worse).

Now that I've said that and no team will want me: I can't picture myself in any other locker room than Edmonton. When I started in Colorado, I really liked it and I had minimal interest of getting pulled up. I thought the SMJHL was the perfect level of immersion and personality and I liked swimming in the shallow end. Maybe I just like where I am because I'm old and irrelevant and hate change because I like where I've worked to get to. If Keygan and Tommy are done with me one day and want to sell me for parts (briscuit, tenderloin, sirloin, etc.) I could see a big s47 reunion in Atlanta.

Not realistic, of course, since i'll be in ATL forever, but i feel like i'd fit in with pretty much every team in the league. i'm like the anti-assclap lol. NEW was my first home and a lot of the people there (including the people in charge) were there when I was around, so that'd be an easy landing spot for me to go back to.

SD - Wrong. Jaja Ding Dong is the greatest song of this decade.
Carp - Too early to say. Any team of the GL can make the playoffs probably, but I still think TOR is the weakest of the group. So I wouldn't be surprised to see us in 4th place at the end of the season. So maybe 5/10. However, it's nice to see that we can beat other GL teams now. Took us long enough. Next season we'll be better.

Julio:Really two schools of thought here. Angus is just a superior taste all around. Holsteins are pretty traditional, but i think an Ayrshire better encapsulates these qualities. This list is pretty accurate and gives a good breakdown. A longhaired one looks great, but you just know that its full of ticks because cows don't use shampoo and conditioner; just like how everyone had a friend with a Labradoodle puppy that was incredibly cute, except it aged into an angry curly haired "poodle" and yea, its hypoallergenic, but the decline in cuteness has to be absolutely crushing. I like to aim for the "English Labrador" or "Pembroke welsh corgi" style where its a cute puppy and it grows into a handsome/cute adult, and the cow equivalent is probably a jersey, but I'd settle for a simmental.

Hotdog - great, question, you'd have to ask that person! It is interesting to look at it now, actually. Part of the "best of S47" label will have to do with longevity and who draws their career out longest vs. who retires early. Morgan has the highest peak, of course, and will have great career numbers due to the Hamilton bump so it's tough to argue against Theo right now. Kennedy has a great record as a defenseman as well. If Toronto can keep up this play for a few seasons (they certainly will) Carpy will emerge as a late contender, though splitting time with Scoochie could dig in to that. Tokolosh, Parmborg, Westbroek, and Selman also will put up good career numbers as they continue on, again bolstered by strong teammates. I think there's a path for EVO landing in the conversation here if i can win another Dar or two. I'll be Atlanta's highest TPE forward for the next <long time> so if I can keep racking up two-way numbers I could get a less traditional (meaning less based on pure offensive output) path to the claim.

gabe is currently making it the most toxic but gabe is simply continuing the trend began by @Acsolap gabe is a true disciple and he's taken it to heart.

Julio - I think this was directed at @SDCore but I’ll jump in with my point of view.
It was really disappointing to see the lack of sex positivity within the league. It was removed for being too provocative. Although the stringy mess covering the challenge cup was clearly melted Parmesan and not bodily fluids, a handful (palm-full?) of users found the stickiness upsetting, and unbecumming of the stoicism and prestige surrounding the challenge cup. A few members should have gone to their urologists if thats the mix up they were having. Glossy melted cheese is far from “pearlescent”, unless I’m confused and the saying is “a fondu necklace”. Even grosser, some users didn’t like the yellow hue added during the second iteration, claiming it looked even more “dischargey”, and I just think that’s a personal thing that a lot of the underage users and myself did not need to know.

Why was it the wrong decision: I’m not sure who made the final decision, but I was told that a factor was that Reddit recruitment was that weekend, and that image was not super welcumming to potential users who didn’t know the light-heartedness / memey / Parmesan-inside-jokiness of the league. When I first joined, the site was a beautiful Edmonton Blue, and it definitely effected my user experience, So I appreciate the risk of first gen retention. But unlike the users who didn’t like the “in-their-face-ness” of Izzy’s parm load, I’m not going to be butthurt about it. I’m happy knowing that I made something beautiful and that many users got to experience my art installation. Maybe one day the SHL will be progressive enough to have allegedly sex positive imagery on their banner. But until then, the Calgary Cum Banner hibernates on my creative cloud drive.

I heard @TnlAstatine downloaded the PNG and keeps it in a locked folder called “homework”.

Hotdog has the biggest range. Top earner, GM, PT head, Award winner: you can click any portion of the site and find him there and performing in a top role. For the uninitiated, Freddie Mercury (of Queen fame) had a historically impressive range. Google had this to say "His known vocal range extended from bass low F (F2) to soprano high F (F6). He could also get up to tenor high F (F5)" but I have no idea what that means. Mercury was universally recognized as talented and was well-liked by everyone; from my hippy uncle to my homo-phobic uncle, everyone could unite behind the idea that Freddie Mercury was a generational talent. BUT: it's hotDOG, and Freddie was notoriously a cat person.

SDCore is the guitarist and one of the singers of the band and styled after Tom DeLonge (occasionally) of Blink 182 (I'm not going to list associated acts). A recognizable voice that played an important role in my formative years (being an angsty middle schooler / being an angsty two-way forward). I honestly think Core is closer to Mark Hoppus, but he was bass, and Core is definitely guitar. Tom notoriously left the band in pursuit of hunting space aliens, and Core hasn't personally given me a reason as to why he stepped down from commissioner, so I can only assume what he's up to. I think the SHL version of aliens are multis, so watch out King. BUT: Core isn't as whiny or out of the box(car racer) as DeLonge. On discord when immature things are said he doesn't engage, when the real Tom would probably belt out a "will you shut up, [Julio/Ford], and stop this pain tonight? Stop this pain tonight."

bbjygm's player is named Slap, and no one in the history of music slapped the bass harder than Bootsy Collins (from the band Parliament). Bootsy's tracksuit was a bright "Wolfpack Green". Bootsy's 20-Gallon hat was big enough for all of the tricks. Slap's playstyle was flashiest in the first ~third of his career, when he was riffing sweet one-timers to Ola Wagstrom and Eko Van Otter, just like how Bootsy's tracksuits were the most glittery in the first ~third of his performing career. BUT: Slap McShotty has never been suspended which means that he's taken nowhere near enough drugs in order to create 10 (ten!) science-fiction themed funk albums. Tear the roof off the sucker.

Carpy is likened to Max Weinberg of Bruce Springsteen's friends: E Street Band. Some German heritage and 4 decades of consistency are certainly an accurate comparison for the goalie who has been the backbone of Toronto. Drafts happen, trade deadlines pass, Clarence passes away, Steve Van Zandt wants to try acting on Sopranos (and does a pretty good job), but the beats still going, and its Weinberg/Carpy behind the attention seekers, hitting posts/drums with a stick and getting back to business. Max's son (Jay) is actually the drummer for slipknot and is a goalie as well. BUT: there is no "but" unless you argue that Carpy should be Jay instead.

Tokolosh is the background dancer Kevin Federline (who was a background dancer for NSYNC and Justin Timberlake). A gaudy clown who doesn't know his place and hasn't done shit since his first year of relevance. More of a punch line than a performer, KFed latched onto some successful people around them and rode them until a 2021 interview that is airing now (draw your own tokolosh comparisons). The oversexed and undereducated former star will leave you silent, either because he won't shut up, or you forgot to yell PopoZão because no one knows that song because it sucks. BUT: Tokolosh never hooked up with Britney Spears, so he's a worse version of Federline.
