Pacific Division Draft Review

We're here today with BIG Parm Media, coming out of retirement to earn some money and review the Draft for the Pacific division teams! This includes Division Winner Calgary, runner up Los Angeles along with Edmonton, Seattle and San Francisco. It's a division that saw Calgary and Los Angeles finish just 2 points apart at the top of the standings last season with 83 and 81 points respectively, they seem to be in their own tier as the strongest two teams in the division right now. Edmonton and Seattle finished 3rd and 4th with 74 and 71 points on the season as they settle into the 2nd tier with San Francisco bringing up the rear with just 45 points last season, although the Pride are definitely a competitive team that's capable of surprising people on any given night. Heading into S61 we would speculate that Calgary and LA will be in the running for the division lead again with Seattle also having a chance, not sure about Edmonton but anything's possible, followed by San Fran. I have no idea about the off-season moves for these teams yet but that's my best guess as of now.

So how did these Pacific Division teams do in the draft? Let's first take a look at what picks they had (assuming the Draft OP is updated).

Dragons - 5, 6, 18, 38
Panthers -  Auto Drafted GM Fuzz's Player
Argonauts - 10, 12, 20, 43, 51
Blizzard - 27, 33, 53
pride - 23, 25, 26, 54

We see above that Calgary and Seattle each had 3 picks in the 1st round marking this as an important draft for both franchises. San fran and Edmonton would do their work in the 2nd round making 5 picks total between them and then most of the teams had picks in the later rounds some were used to take fliers some were passed on.

Ok here we go, let's start with reigning Pacific Division Champs Calgary!

Dragons  Dragons

This was a big draft for the Dragons, holding three 1st round picks for the first time in a very long time. A little history here with 5th Overall being their highest selection since the S40 draft when they took Otis B Driftwood 2nd overall.  In fact, the only time I remember the Dragons having two picks in the top 5 or 6 was way back in season 23 when O4L drafted Dragons legend Michael 'Big Game' Boychuk and Fernando Pergher both in the top 5. So this was indeed a special opportunity for the Dragons franchise. Let's see how they did!

Dragons 5th Overall: Grogu Mandosson- The 6'2" Norwegian center clocks in at 215 pounds and boasts a well rounded game. Able to score and defend with the best of them, he's a two-way center with very high upside. He posted 22 points for Anaheim last season in only about 11 minutes a game displaying his elite level skill as a rookie. He'll look to take on a bigger role in the coming seasons as one of the budding stars of the SMJHL. The Dragons got a stud in Mandosson and a fantastic member for the locker room. Obviously I love this pick.

Dragons 6th Overall: Darwin Koff- The Swedish power winger stands 6'1" and weighs 212 pounds. He plays an abbrassive game and had an impressive 23 points for Vancouver and 54 hits in under 10 minutes a game. Word is he's the kind of player his teammates love and the opponent hates. Dragons fans love that brand of hockey and we expect Koff to become a star and fan favorite in Calgary. A great presence in the locker room as well this was  an awesome pick for the Dragons.  I can't wait to play with him in the future.

Dragons 18th Overall: Duncan Mackenzie- The big winger is 6'2" and tips the scales at a robust 225 pounds, he's a power forward with skill and plays with and edge. He managed to post 17 points for Kelowna as a rookie and an impressive 94 hits! There's no question opposing players need to keep their head up when Mackenzie's on the ice! He's already been marked the steal of the 1st round and is making good on his 18th overall selection. A great fit in the locker room there's no doubt this is going to be an incredible pick for the Dragons. I personally scouted this guy so I know he's going to be a gem.

Dragons 38th Overall: Sam Stone- The Canadian winger has good size at 6'1" and 210 pounds, hailing from the hockey hotbed of Toronto he grew up on the game. With 16 points and a big 79 hits for St.Louis he showed he has skill and power to go around. We think he's going to provide great value from the late 2nd round as his owner is very experienced in the league and in a familiar spot to succeed. We think this pick has sleeper written all over it.

An absolutely fantastic draft for Calgary as 3rd year GM's Mike Izzy and Katth continue to make their mark and add to their future core. They also added super prospect SMJHL goal scoring leader and Raymond Lindsay Award Winner Alexis Saint-Michel last week which was a huge move for the franchise. When you think about the fact that the Dragons called up 3 rookies last season, one of which is a favorite for rookie of the year (Luukas Lilja) and still made it to the conference finals under coach Wally's wizardry, this team is in an excellent position to remain strong for a very long time. Calgary never has bad seasons even in transition years as evident by them winning the division 4 of the last 5 seasons and the past 3 years in a row. The Dragons franchise got a major boost this past week and the future is incredibly bright.

Argonauts  Argonauts

Next let's look at Seattle who also had a big draft with three 1st round picks. As a relatively new franchise this could be the first time in their history that's happened but I'm just speculating and honestly have no idea and I'm too lazy to look. Anyway, they've been improving each season and getting more competitive so let's see how they did in this draft!

Argonauts 10th Overall: Landon Fischermann- The big 6'4" 205 pound defenseman is one of the best in the class and anyone with a last name Fischermann is good in Steelhead's book! He had a real good rookie season for Vancouver logging over 18 minutes a game and posting 21 points along with an impressive 77 blocks and 86 hits! What a strong season for the future star defenseman. We really like this pick for Seattle and if Calgary didn't have so many young Dmen already he'd probably have been taken earlier by the Dragons.

Argonauts 12th Overall: Willie Miller- The first goalie off the board and the best earner among netminders in the class, Seattle sees Miller as their goalie of the future investing a high pick in the Swedish puck stopper. He has high end skill but was thrown to the wolves this season on a bad Nevada team and played 59 games with not so great numbers, but that's all situational. He has a good work ethic and should become a great goalie in the SHL one day.

Argonauts 20th Overall: Max Manning- Seattle's 3rd pick and the last selection in round 1 was the big Canadian two-way center. A player who showed some skill in Colorado this season with 18 points in just over 11 minutes a game. He's more of a playmaker than a scorer at this point in his career and has the potential to develop into a star for Seattle. We scouted this player ourselves in Calgary and like this selection for Seattle, should be great value from pick 20.

Argonauts 43rd: Jamal Nightingale- The Jamaican defenseman (that's not something we say everyday) is a big kid at 6'2" 200 pounds and plays with an edge. He had an impressive 102 blocks and 103 hits along with 17 points for Colorado this season. At pick 43 the veteran user was definitely worth a flier for Seattle and we think he will definitely outplay his draft position, he has sleeper written all over him.

Argonauts 51st: Magnus Galtson- Seattle took a flier on the Canadian defenseman at pick 51, he's active and updating so why not bring him in. He had 12 points and 82 hits for Colorado last season as Seattle dips into the Raptors draft pool for the 3rd time in a row. They must have some great scouts in Colorado because this was  common theme for them this draft. We think Galtson has potential and wish him well in his development.

Overall Seattle had a great draft, they brought in a high end defenseman, goalie and forward in the 1st round, then took fliers on a couple more defenseman in the later rounds who are both active and can be developed. 5 active players from any draft is a good performance and we think Seattle did very well in S61.

Panthers  Panthers

Let's take a quick look at Los Angeles now who only got one player in this draft, but it's a gauranteed high end player as their Head GM Fuzz's recreate Tanner Fox was auto drafted to LA.

Panthers Auto Drafted: Tanner Fox- The gigantic American born defenseman towers at 6'6" tall and weighs 229 pounds. An absolute bruiser of a player, he had a huge rookie season for Carolina posting 36 points and got nominated for the best trophy in the SMJHL, The Esa Anrikkanen Award for Rookie of the Year. What a stud. There's obviously high end talent here and LA is getting a great player. Fuzz is a great guy and as GM this is obviously a gauranteed long-term star down the road for the Panthers.

While LA probably would have liked to have a couple more picks in this draft and add to their relatively small yet solid prospect pool, anytime you can get a gauranteed good player for free is not exactly a bad draft. LA's been on the upswing lately and I'm sure will look to add to their prospect pool in the coming seasons as Fuzz and TDZ continue to do a good job in Los Angeles.

Blizzard  Blizzard

Now we move to Edmonton, who under new management had picks 27, 33 and 53. They started with pick 13 but decided to move it for pick 27 and a 1st in S62. Management must have a plan because there were some real good players on the board at 13 when they decided to move the pick, names like Perevalov, Cue, Snooks, Newff, Mackenzie, Manning and Towelie come to mind. We assume they didn't love anyone in particular of that group and felt they could possibly get a better player with a reddit 1st next season. Time will tell, but let's take a look at who they did get!

Blizzard 27th: Vincent Fox- The 6'4" 225 pound defenseman is a big body on the ice and brings a solid two-way game to Edmonton. He posted 20 points and 64 hits for Carolina last season in a solid rookie campaign. He has good upside and at pick 27 the Blizzard should be getting an active player who can make their line up in a few seasons. We think they did well here.

Blizzard 33rd: Dobby Hintzkanen- Second American born defenseman taken by Edmonton, he's average size at 5'11" and 200 pounds but has some skill evident by posting 18 points for Anaheim in his rookie season. Another active player in round 2 much like Fox with some support he should develop into a solid SHL player in time. Also we must say he has a pretty good name.

Blizzard 53rd: Rusty Rameo- The 6 foot netminder from Japan was the next player taken by Edmonton as they decided to add  a goalie late in the draft. Rameo got into 20 games last season for Maine and while his numbers weren't great with continued work and training he could become a solid SHL back up to Tyler Ward and could even become a starter in time. Edmonton was in need of another goalie so it makes sense they grabbed one here.

Decent draft for Edmonton as they focused on defense and goaltending, coming out with 3 actives players who they can develop. While they didn't get a high end first round pick this season they should be able to make up for it in next seasons draft with an extra 1st rounder.

pride  pride

Finishing up we move on to San Francisco who did not have a 1st after moving it to Calgary last season, but they did have three picks in the early 2nd round which is a pretty good place to be in a strong draft like this. Coming out with 3 of the top 26 players is never a bad thing so let's see how they did!

pride 23rd: Randy Marsh- The Austrian Defenseman was the first player selected for San Fran this season. At 6'1" and 210 pounds he has decent size and made the most of it in his rookie season for maine. Throwing an astonishing 170 hits and and blocking 95 shots. Pretty great numbers for a rookie Dman and he added 13 points. Marsh looks like a phsyical force and a good pick with upside for San Fran.

pride 25th: Petr Sbvoda- The Czech winger stands 6'2" and weighs 210 pounds. I'm sure San Fran was happy a well known user like Artermis was on the board at 25. An experienced SHL'er his latest player posted a pretty good season for Kelowna with 24 points and 10 goals in around 14 minutes a game. We think San Fran will get good value out of this player at pick 25.

pride 26th: Emeril Legasse- BAM!! Legasse spiced up San Fran's draft when the rotund 5'7" 250 pound winger went to the Pride at pick 26. He has a great rookie season for New Foundland last season with 27 points in only 11 minutes a game. This appears to be a real talented player with upside and we like this pick for San Fran.

pride 54th: Patrice Bergeron Jr- The son of NHL legend Patrice Bergerong we have to think this guy is worth a flier at pick 54. He has a solid rookie season for last place Nevada with 24 points and with continued practice hours could turn into a solid SHL player in a few seasons. If he's half the player his father was the Pride will have gotten something pretty good late in the draft.

Overall San Fran did pretty well in this draft, making the most of their three early 2nd round selections. They took 3 active players in the top 26 and what could be a sleeper at 54 adding to their solid prospect pool. San Fran appears to be in good shape after this draft despite not having a 1st rounder.

Shl  Shl

Pretty solid draft for the Pacific Division overall. We think Calgary and Seattle did the best, adding at least 3 very strong prospects to their pipeline plus a flier or two. We also think San Fran came out with a pretty good result, especially if they can develop that trio they took in the early 20's into good SHL'ers. Edmonton with some support could get good value out of their mid 2nd rounders and LA will surely get a great player with Fuzz's recreate.

This is an interesting division right now with no team being an absolute powerhouse and obvious cup favorite. Even with Calgary winning the division 3 seasons in a row and LA being right there last season, all teams appear to be competitive while building on the fly for future success. It's entirely possible 3-5 seasons down the road we could see this become one of the strongest divisions in the entire league. I'm happy to be a part of it.

Best of luck to all the Pacific Division draftees, keep working hard and we'll see you in the SHL in a few seasons!

Cheers
