Colorado Roster Breakdown and Draft Outlook
As we now approach the Season 61 Simulation Major Junior Hockey Draft, I will be taking a look at Colorado’s current roster outlook, how it is constructed, give a breakdown of the players, look at their builds and identify some draft needs. As we say goodbye to Noel Blanchet, Roboute Gouiliman, Sonata Diamante, Ethan Bravo and Basil Sivart, there are more roster spots needed to be filled. Colorado Current Roster Construction 10 F (1 IA) 6 D (2 IA) 2 G (1 IA) Bringing out the depth charts now, here is what the next two season of Colorado’s roster should look like (assuming all players graduate after 4 seasons in the SMJHL): Colorado Depth Chart for S61 Kekkonen-McDangle-Nystrom Gobbledygook-Manning-Nishimori Tokke-Vacant-Harrak Trump-Vacant-Vacant McFife XVIII-Nightingale Graf-Galtisson Vacant-Vacant Seteki Vacant Colorado Depth Chart for S62 Gobbledygook-McDangle-Tokke Trump-Manning-Harrak Vacant-Vacant-Vacant Vacant-Vacant-Vacant Graf-Nightingale Galtisson-Vacant Vacant-Vacant Seteki Vacant After a deep analysis of the present and the future, it is clear that a pressing need for Colorado is at Center and at Defense. While it is known that SMJHL players can technically play anywhere, Center is a harder position to find natural candidates as it requires the development of the Faceoffs attribute. As two centers, Noel Blanchet and Sonata Diamante have graduated from the J, the remaining two are S60 draftee Rinky McDangle and rookie Max Manning. So naturally, the ideal would be to look for two replacements. On the defensive side, McFife XVIII has one more season the play, but the D is solidly locked down by recent draftees Graf, Nightingale and Galtisson, who will anchor the blueline for years to come. A few more defenseman ushered in would help build depth. Player Analysis (ordered by position) GOALIE *OK, disclaimer. I wrote this before Senji was dealt to Anaheim, and am too lazy to rewrite it again. All you need to know is Zhen Roza also very similar goalie to Senji, is gonna be a beast and Colorado will still be in good hands afterwards.* S60 G Senji Seteki - 483 TPE Activity: Active Call Up Potential: Low S60 Stats: Analysis: The clear number 1 goalie on the team now, Senji Seteki had an excellent sophomore season, ascending to the starter’s spot in Colorado, while earning TPE at a good pace. He plays a very calm and patient game, with good rebound control and recovery, while in the right place with his fantastic positioning across the net. Seteki’s glove and blocker are all there, and his reflexes are exceptionally sharp. Although his poke checks and mental toughness could use some improvement, but overall, he commands and controls the game at his pace very well. Now in his 3rd season, he is able to apply 75 more TPE to his build, further strengthening his play while continually improving across the board. Everyone in the league should watch out for Seteki next year. He may prove to be a brick wall in net. Colorado is in good hands with goaltending in the near future. S58 G Sebastian Andrews - 155 TPE Activity: Active Call Up Potential: None S60 Stats: Goalie Outlook: The goaltending in Colorado will be perfectly fine, as Senji Seteki could be around for 2-3 more seasons to play in his crease. However, after, a new heir to the goaltending throne must come along, as Seteki will get called up sooner or later. DEFENSE S59 RD Angus McFife XVIII © - 688 TPE Activity: Active Call Up Potential: High S60 Stats: 66 GP, 12 G, 27 A, 39 P, +5, 22:39 ATOI Analysis: In his last season in Colorado, British defenseman McFife the Eighteenth has been a tremendous leader as captain of the Raptors, shining with his play on and off the ice. With strong TPE progression, McFife easily reached the 425 TPE limit on his build and nears the 700 mark. His solid passing and defensive IQ tops the charts, as he is able to hit the mark on tons of passes he makes throughout the game. McFife consistently lights up the scoreboards, goals and assists alike, playing as the team’s quarterback and puck moving defenseman. While most would expect an offensive defenseman like this to struggle, well defensively, that is not the case for McFife. As previously mentioned, his defensive IQ is his strong suit where he reads the other team’s plays well, and while his hitting, checking and positioning are not anything that blows minds, they pair along well and supplement with his otherwise elite offensive game. Again, in his last season, Colorado will soon lose a valuable member of their team, on and off the ice. S61 RD Hans Graf - 307 TPE Activity: Active Call Up Potential: None S60 Stats: 66 GP, 7 G, 17 A, 24 P, -9, 18:46 ATOI Analysis: Hans Graf, native of Germany, played a very solid two-way game in his rookie season, using all of his skillset to make an impact on both ends of the rink. Graf has a higher floor, so he does not have an attribute that really tops the rest, nothing weak either, but he has a multi-faceted game which helps him excel in a potent 200-foot game. Overall, Graf has an extremely balanced playstyle, with lots of potential, being able to chip in on the offense, distributing pucks across the points and into the heart of the zone. He will take his shots when he feels the opportunity and has good hockey instincts and senses on the offensive. At the other end of the rink, Graf defends with all the means possible, whether that is getting down and blocking a shot or using his strong reach for a stick check. He positions himself up in good areas of the rink to do so, and when the time comes, he has the ability to transition the puck up the ice. One area for improvement to assist the transitions is on his speed and acceleration, which sometimes he could use some more foot speed. Just in his first season though, and earning lots of TPE, Hans Graf can easily tune out some weaknesses he has and reach the high ceiling he has. S61 LD Jamal Nightingale - 277 TPE Activity: Active Call Up Potential: High S60 Stats: 66 GP, 1 G, 16 A, 17 P, -5, 19:00 ATOI Analysis: Another rookie defenseman, Jamaican Jamal Nightingale lives up to his position, a defenseman, which is to defend. Nightingale does that particularly well. Even though his body is not the biggest, at 200 pounds, he can really dig down and get physical, hitting opponents along the boards or in the open. His defensive IQ is off the charts for a first year, as he shows poise, confidence and also the smarts to read where the other team might go. His checking, ice positioning and stick complements his defense alongside his excellent physicality, and altogether, Nightingale has been a real solid defensive defenseman Colorado can rely on to shut down the opponent. While his offensive game will most likely be of less impact, his puck control is decent, and could make him a good transition defenseman. Nightingale could project to be a top defensive defenseman sooner than later and would pair extremely well with an offensive defenseman. He is progressing fairly well, although not as good as some other Raptors rookies, he still has plenty of time to catch up. With his rock solid defense, he has built a solid game that already has a high floor and have good use to a team. S61 RD Magnus Galtisson - 244 TPE Activity: Active Call Up Potential: None S60 Stats: 44 GP, 6 G, 6 A, 12 P, +9, 17:24 ATOI Analysis: Galtisson, a later rookie signing is currently slightly behind the rest of the rookie core when it comes to progression, but already has developed some tools that could make him into another capable two way defenseman. The Calgarian has mostly focused on his defense for now, as he hits and uses his body to check others very well. Standing at 6’2 215lbs, he has hefty strength, and combine that with his aggression and physicality, he is a fearless, punishing defender that will get in your face and way. Offensively, his game is still being developed, but he passes well from ends and points, and can shoot from a solid range. His playmaking and IQ are decent and serviceable, and along with the defense, he could really be a tough and aggressive two-way defender that contributes on both ends of the rink. S58 RD Rovolio Clocksberg Jr - 186 TPE Activity: Inactive Call Up Potential: None S60 Stats: 22 GP, 2 G, 6 A, 8 P, +2, 17:01 ATOI Defense Outlook: While Colorado will lose McFife XVIII soon, the blueline will quickly be anchored by Hans Graf, Jamal Nightingale plus Magnus Galtisson. While those are 3 solid pieces to build around, the Raptors will most likely need a few more defensemen in the upcoming drafts. Two inactives were playing throughout the season, but they won't be progressing at all, which brings a need for active defenseman. FORWARDS S59 RW KEKW Kekkonen - 637 TPE Activity: Active Call Up Potential: High S60 Stats: 66 GP, 30 G, 26 A, 56 P, +20, 17:37 ATOI Analysis: The top TPE forward on the team, S59 forward KEKW Kekkonen, who sits at 6’4, 220 lbs has done a fairly good job at earning TPE and improving his build. The native of Lohja, Finland could potentially be one of the best pure goal scorers the Raptors have ever had. After breaking Diamante and Svenson’s goal records, KEKW is the first player to ever hit the 30 goal mark in Raptors franchise history. Based off his build, his shooting accuracy is very good, but what really stands out is his ability to screen and get open. Being a dangling forward, Kekkonen has excellent vision and knowledge of the rink, using his swift speed and delicate balance to evade opponents while finding opportunities for others to pass the puck to him. Once that puck is on his stick, he knows to grip it and rip it (or tip it), from anywhere, the slot, the dot, the point, the front of the net, the back of the net, your mom’s house, you name it. However, this may be the last season Colorado will see this Finnish sniper play, as he most likely will be called up to Buffalo next year. KEKW has the potential to becoming one of the most dangerous snipers in the SHL. S59 LW Jack Nishimori - 627 TPE Activity: Active Call Up Potential: High S60 Stats: 66 GP, 17 G, 27 A, 44 P, +1, 17:48 ATOI Analysis: Another S59 forward, Jack Nishimori, from London, UK has also earned relatively well in retrospect to his draft class. While not extremely strong or tall, standing at 6 feet and 205 pounds, Nishimori has some of the best offensive tools, smarts and IQ in the game. When the puck is in his or his team’s possession, he connects on passes to open teammates, puck handles through traffic proficiently and gets open to collect any saucers. However, what he does best is his two-way game. If the puck in not on his stick, he will absolutely hound the opponent, in either zone, for the puck. Nishimori stick checks and checks opponents with expertise, and positions himself up really well in the neutral and defensive zones to be able to ward off any rushes or cycle attempts. Combine that with his top-notch offensive game, you have a real well-rounded forward at your disposal. However, like Kekkonen, this may be Nishimori’s last season as he ages out of the SMJHL. S59 LW Artemius Nystrom - 626 TPE Activity: Active Call Up Potential: High S60 Stats: 66 GP, 23 G, 25 A, 48 P, +17, 15:58 ATOI Analysis: Artemius Nystrom is a case of your prototypical power forward. He uses his massive height and frame, standing at 6’6 and 235 pounds to play a heavy game and be a real menace to play against. However, in addition to his towering presence on ice, Nystrom has a set of absolute wheels, letting him glide up and down the ice and get open easily. This Swedish power forward has an absolutely crippling hit, which he uses all of his force to lean in and give opponents a bad time. He is not only here to hit and be physical though; Nystrom has a very accurate and precise shot, which he uses from a long range as well. His passing is still being worked on, but as a potential graduate sooner or later, he can unbank all that TPE and improve his build, most likely his passing and some defensive tools. Otherwise, his defensive game is pretty solid, and won’t be a liability to his team. Nystrom’s checking, stick checking, positioning and defensive reads are all decent enough to allow him to be a strong power forward. S60 LW Gonzo Gobbledygook - 526 TPE Activity: Active Call Up Potential: Low-Medium S60 Stats: 66 GP, 23 G, 33 A, 56 P, 0, 16:55 ATOI Analysis: Gonzo Gobbledygook, the highest TPE earner of his class has performed exceptionally well in his sophomore season. He flashed some insane potential, and with his versatile and all-round skillset, he dominated offensively with some smart kit building. Gonzo currently does not have anything that immediately appeals to the eyes, but a closer look reveals that his stats are almost all well balanced. He has a strong shot but plays well in his dangler roles with a quick acceleration and great agility. His explosive speed and stamina also play well physically, as he uses that agility with lateral movements, plus a quick acceleration into blitzing speed while easily dodging opponents, to get open. Plus, his offensive reads and playmaking are all of high quality. On the defensive side, Gobbledygook checks opponents well, but other than that, nothing of note other than his defensive reads. However, his build is good enough to not be a hindrance anywhere. His positioning mostly likely will need some work, but other than that, Gonzo has been a real asset for Colorado. Although only in his third season next year, there is a chance he could get called up quite quickly. Gobbledygook has a real good shot at cracking the SHL sooner or later, and could end of as a top line forward with a skilled offensive game. S59 LW Fedor Sotakov - 433 TPE Activity: Inactive Call Up Potential: None S60 Stats: 49 GP, 10 G, 6 A, 16 P, -2, 10:43 ATOI S60 RW Eric Tokke - 428 TPE Activity: Active Call Up Potential: Low S60 Stats: 66 GP, 7 G, 18 A, 25 P, +7, 14:47 ATOI Analysis: Grinder is one word that you could describe Eric Tokke with. He plays a 100% game every day and is relentless out there on the rink. While being one of the tallest and strongest Raptors, his main play revolves around a responsible defense-oriented style. Tokke is adept and skilled at checking opposing players, taking advantage of his height, and consistently puts up strong numbers defensively. Along with checking, his defensive IQ and decision making while stopping opponents are some of his other strengths. Offensively, he makes good passes, and when the puck is in his possession, he handles and distributes it extremely well. An area of improvement would be his shot, as it lacks a bit of power, accuracy and some range. Other than that, there is not too much to worry about, as this is his only second season and he could project to be a very good two-way player. He has so far earned TPE at a good rate and along with 75 more additional TPE at his disposal, it will benefit his current playstyle with more progression in his key stats, along with his weaknesses. S60 C Rinky McDangle - 417 TPE Activity: Active Call Up Potential: Low S60 Stats: 66 GP, 13 G, 15 A, 28 P, -1, 13:18 ATOI Analysis: Rinky McDangle, one of the team’s two centers, is an offensively focused centerman with a penchant for getting up close and doing some of the dirty work. He is a superb garbage collector, always near the net and ready for a goal. His hands are always busy moving, and along with his precise balance and hockey senses, McDangle’s goal scoring capability is very high. The Irish centerman also screens in front of the net well and is always prepared to shoot a puck when it is on his stick. Although he is not fastest skater out there, he also gets under the radar against the other team, consistently getting open for a chance to score. While his faceoffs and defensive IQ are up to par, other parts of his defense, there is room for improvement for his positioning or stick checking. He is still in his 3rd season next year though, so he can raise his build up to a higher level then. McDangle has earned alright to this point, and with some more balance in his kit, he should be able to easily dominate and dangle past his opponents. S58 C Leon Schweingruber - 369 TPE Activity: Inactive Call Up Potential: None S60 Stats: 66 GP, 11 G, 14 A, 25 P, +10, 18:24 ATOI S61 RW Donald Jr Trump - 306 TPE Activity: Active Call Up Potential: None S60 Stats: 66 GP, 5 G, 9 A, 14 P, 0, 14:05 ATOI Analysis: Trump is here to do one thing, and that is to agitate you. With his imposing stature and just presence on the ice, may prefer to stay away and leave him be. However, Trump just will not. Standing tall at 6’6, 235 pounds, Trump plays a high energy and with a spark, to always lift his teammates up. Trump’s strengths are definitely his defense. He is a responsible man in his own zone and his defensive game consists of quality stick checking, checking and smart plays. However, let the smarts step aside as he will absolutely destroy any opponent brave enough to challenge him. He knows how to crush people with an explosive hit, and is willing to stand up for his teammates in a fight. Trump is the exact type of player that you want on your team, and the other team hates. When it comes to the other side of the rink, Trump’s scoring is slightly limited right now but has a higher ceiling than you think. Being an agitator, he screens off goalies very well, and has a rather strong and accurate shot. His reads are good, though his passing would be an area of improvement as he may make less than ideal passes at times. Most importantly, his speed, balance, acceleration and agility could also use some fine tuning, but as a strong TPE earner, there is not much to worry about as he makes his way up. S61 RW Gabe-Gooney-Waters Harrak - 302 TPE Activity: Active Call Up Potential: High S60 Stats: 66 GP, 7 G, 13 A, 20 P, -3, 11:18 ATOI Analysis: In his first season, Canadian Gabe-Gooney-Waters Harrak has been deployed as a two-way forward, in charge of taking care of both ends of the rink. His build mostly plays up to that right now, as along being an extremely smart player on the ice, offensively and defensively, he knows how to use his tools effectively and efficiently. This is displayed in his ability to get open to collect a pass and smart puck distribution, while having a good shot and displaying some goal scoring talent. His passing is alright, but Harrak knows how to use make a opportune one at a good time with the IQ he has. Defensively, on top of his smarts, he applies that well in his strong positioning and clever reads on the other team. Other elements of his game he could get better at are his agility, speed and potentially screening. With a smaller body and frame, at 5’11 170lbs, he should be able to easily improve upon and develop these skills up. Along with the rest of the rookies, Harrak has gained TPE at a reasonable rate, and should be able to take a big step forward. S61 C Max Manning - 299 TPE Activity: Active Call Up Potential: High S60 Stats: 66 GP, 3 G, 15 A, 18 P, -13, 11:22 ATOI Analysis: Max Manning, from Vancouver, is a playmaking center with solid and great offensive instincts while being an all-around player. His best attributes are his passing and offensive IQ. When that puck is in Manning’s possession, he is an excellent passer and chooses smart times to create plays and scoring opportunities. His goal scoring ability, while still a work in progress, are not that far off, as he has been developing a more up to tone shot, while learning to get open more. On the defensive side of things, even though he won’t be shutting down anyone right now, Manning has a decent base to work with, along with a higher floor. His speed can really pump up in a shorter time, while being agile and nimble skating on the ice. An area to improve on would be bringing all those defensive stats up together, slowly raising that floor to be at least alright in his own zone. Manning has good faceoff technique, as he easily pulls back pucks for his team, and as it improves, he could be a great center for a team to pair along with some goal scorers. As a rookie, he should easily be able to up some of his weaknesses, and eventually be a versatile and elite player that a team could enjoy. Forward Outlook: The forwards should relatively be covered next year, with the exception of center. They are mostly filled with only a few unfilled roster spots in the lower lines. However, with potential graduates in Kekkonen, Nystrom and Nishimori, there will be a continuous need for forwards in the system. Draft Needs:
