(2x Draft Media) Montreal Draft Retrospective
#1

The Montreal Patriotes made a whopping SEVEN draft picks in the Season 64 Entry Draft. This article will take a closer look at those players, and what they will bring to the Montreal roster in this season, and moving forward as a franchise. We'll start with our first pick, and the Second Overall selection: Johnny Patey.

Johnny Patey comes to Montreal from the Detroit Falcons, where they finished 5th in points among the blueliners, with 3G and 17A for 20 points over 66 games. with 73 Hits nd 78 blocked shots, Johnny Patey will provide a solid presence on the Montreal blueline, proving in Detroit their ability to handle special teams, producing points short-handed, on the powerplay, and at even strength. At 6 foot 3, and 207 lbs, this big-bodied defender could prove to be an extremely useful swiss-army knife sort of player; able to provide utility in multiple roles and situations. WE have high hopes and expectations for this rookie!

Next, the Fourth Overall selection, and Montreals 2nd pick of the draft: Mads McBride. The Left Winger comes to Montreal from the Maine Timber, where he put up 16G and 21A for 37 points in 66 games. With a pair of Powerplay Points from seeing only 0:37 of Powerplay time with Maines second Powerplay unit, Mads looks to be a productive force right out of the gate, projecting to add some speed and offensive firepower to Montreals forward core. A 12.00 shot percentage lends hope that Mads will grow into a top scorer for the Patriotes. Mads also brings a wealth of SHL experience and despite coming in as a rookie, will provide a solid, veteran presence in the locker room.

Shylo Moxii, the Thirteenth Overall pick, comes to Montreal as a UDFA from Great Falls. Shylo brings a to of potential upside to the PAtriotes roster, demosntrating solid play through a somewhat limited sample size with the Grizzlies. 5 points through 34 games, while only playing a hair under 8 minutes a night, is hardly enough to make judgements on. Their strength in the faceoff circle and defensive instincts will add tremendous depth down the Center in Montreal.

Robert Helvetica, the Twenty-Third Overall pick, comes to Montreal from the Carolina Kraken, joining myself, and Marek Skoda amongst Kraken alumni. Helvetica put up 25 points through 66 games, along with 64 blocked shots and a respectable 8.1 shooting percentage. Helvetica has an extremely high potential ceiling, and we are very excited for what they can bring to the Montreal roster. Helveticas stickchecking and positioning skills could see him develop into a highly effective penalty killer, and eat some important defensive minutes in Montreal.

With the 34th Overall Pick, the Montreal Patriotes selected Dan King, from the Regina Elk. King had a solid season for the Elk, putting up 17A and 17G for a total of 34 points in 66 games. Dan King will add offensive depth to the Patriotes impressive prospect pool, and comes with a decent upside for future growth. Dan is a well-rounded forward, who already plays a fairly complete game. With a long ways to go before arriving in the big leagues, King has plenty of time to work on his game, and could prove to be a late-draft steal.

The Montreal Patriotes had two subsequent picks here, and with the 35th Overall Pick selected Ike Broflovski of the Detroit Falcons. Ike totally 63 games, nearly a full season, with Detroit, and tallied 8G and 12A for 20 points. Ikes shot and offensive IQ are his strongest qualities, and will eventually add some serious firepower to the Patriotes offensive core. Advanced stats point to Ike playing below his potential last season, and should be more than worth keeping an eye on come pre-season.

Last, but not least, the Montreal Patriotes selected James James, a right winger from the Colorado Raptors, 53rd Overall. James came to Colorado late in the season, only dressing for 17 games, during which he put up 4 points. While the sample size is quite small, he did finish the season with an impressive 18.2 shooting percentage. James plays a physical game, making good use of their size. Scouts in the Montreal organization are looking forward to seeing James James play a full season.

With plenty of picks, and all looking promising, the future of Montreal continues to be bright. With some Head Office shakeups in the offseason, an infusion of youth and new blood into the locker room is exactly what the team needed. While Montreal be able to continue its dogged progress? Or will they hit a speedbump? Season 64 will be an interesting one for the young expansion team, and one to watch.
