S66 PT #0: Passion Project

PLAYER PROMPT

Walton Stromberg has recently noticed, that recovering from hockey - especially mentally - is becoming more and more difficult as he is becoming and older player. He feels that he is taking sometimes even too much responsibility and is thinking too much about hockey. To relieve that, Walton has learnt that PC gaming is the best way to get his mind out of hockey, and it has become his passion. However, so far he has been playing old games on a computer, that's very much outdated. That's why he decided to upgrade his PC setup thoroughly through the summer, with an unlimited budget. Walton is going to do a lot of research on everything he needs, from the computer to all the accessories and furniture, such as a gaming chair, monitor, headphones, mouse and keyboard. Eventually he plans to have a top-notch, state-of-the-art setup that will help him fully immerse into gaming when he needs to reset his mind.

Eight weeks of downtime is plenty of time to use all this money to set up wealth to keep going after the old playing career has ended. So, Speedwagon has taken to the stock market! Wall Street is right there! Why not? Hire a broker, learn the financial ropes, become a student of the market, and try not to look at Fidelity too often when the market is open and watch as the numbers wildly fluctuate on some days. It's not good for his heart, his wealth, or his game. He might freak out and make an impulsive move to try to counteract what he fears will come. His broker has assured him he can just ride this one out in the long run. Just be patient, and play your game in the meantime. But in case that's not enough, his broker has also introduced him to a series of videos in which people on wallstreetbets make ridiculous get-rich-quick plays only to get burned. And stories of people who panicked when the numbers went the wrong way. That should get the point across.

Player Prompt:

8 weeks off is exactly what I needed, the first thing I am doing is going to see my family for a couple of days. While doing that I will be planning my vacation, probably start off somewhere at an all in exclusive resort, just so that I can really focus on relaxing and not needing to do any type of chores. After that I would have another trip lined up, probably to Greece, and spend some time on the islands, relaxing and sight seeing. Once I finished there I would hop around europe exploring different areas and making different memories. From there it is time to go back home, settle down and get back into some of my hockey duties slowly but surely. Which included doing some sponsorship work, and volunteering hours. From there it is time to hit the gym, and start pushing weights to make sure I get back into game shape. In recap most of my time off is spent traveling and spending time with friends and family.

Hockey Prompt

Marco Barengrub has never felt better after finishing a season. It was by far his best performance on an individual and team level. Career high 52 points, a trip to the Challenge Cup finals and a gold medal with Swizterland are things he never thought would happened. That might be a double edge sword for the upcoming offseason training time as it can't really get any better than that, some would say why would he change anything or push for more. But that's the thing with Barengrub, he could never only rely on natural talent to make it to the show, only hard work and dedication made it possible for him. Marco is nearing his peak and wants to be known as the best defensive forward in the league. Watching a lot of tapes, increasing his cardio and many faceoffs reps will help get there. His offensive game has always been non existent until last season and seeing his name on the scoring sheets night after night felt great. He's great with carrying the puck but working on his shot would do wonders.

Aleksandr iskandrov is a very big fan of league of legends. As such, I think he would grind the league of legends ladder in an attempt to get challenger on a fresh account in 8 weeks, otherwise known as 2 months. Aleksandr iskandrov is pretty good at league of legends, and plays regularly with the other players and teammates of his on Hamilton and Vancouver. Iskandrov likes to play video games in general too, but prefers games with a competitive element to them of course. Maybe he would take a break from league after being the best in the world and become the greatest valorant player? Or maybe even play overwatch (2). Iskandrov is a very competitive spirit so it's important for him to work on the grind and practice for whatever he's playing, and it reflects in his gameplay. It's clear to see that he's the same way about hokey as well.

JUST's non-hockey passion is playing dungeons and dragons with his huband Gunnar Soderberg and a bunch of their friends. It's been harder with the babies and the move to San Francisco but it did allow JUST to get closer to one of the players in the game that Gunnar DMs: Ruggs McOoooh who plays Beiwraek, a huge light cleric who is a great friend to JUST's character Thunderbones. Meeting all the old and new friends in San Francisco has made JUST want to start another game of DnD, but there's always too many people to play with and not enough time and people willing to DM to do so. Lately, JUST has been looking a lot into the Westmarches campaign style of game where multiple people will create players in a set environment and games are mostly one-shots or very small campaigns of a few sessions with the cast changing every time. Hopefully if this comes to reality people will want to play.

Ole Olson is another year old, another year wiser, and has another year of experience under his belt. It makes perfect sense that he will be getting better at understanding the game. He knows what's going to happen before it happens in his own end of the ice. He can see the opposing teams building up and can make sure that he is ready to respond to what the other team is planning. Another big facet of Olson's game he has spent time improving is his strength. As a fairly average player, he has found himself getting pushed around a bit too much. That will not be the case going into the next season as he has put time in the weight room to make sure he is stronger and better equipped to play against the best players in the league. Olson plans to anchor the New Orleans defensive effort this season, and is putting in his all to make sure the Specters have a great defensive season after the team invested in some incredible defensive additions.

Prompt #2

When your player manager is also the general manager of the team, your off-season is pretty well locked in. While Jack Klompus does like to go home to Minnesota to visit family and friends after a long season, he spends majority of the time in San Francisco getting things ready for the next season. He was responsible for giving the new goalies a tour around the team facilities they could use before returning to the SMJHL and then found accommodations for them as well. He gets a list of things that the players want to see improvements to in the off-season and is responsible as the team representative to make sure those things are in place before the players return from the off-season. It's not all bad since Klompus is the first one that gets to use this new equipment and make sure that he's ready to go for the next campaign with all of the years really starting to take a toll on him.

Offseason again, maybe it will be the last one for Wachter, retirment isn't far away anymore. After a long SHL careerer it's starting to get difficulte to stay on the level he wants to be. But for the reason it could be his last, he is going to go home to Austria and will spend the 8 weeks off in the mountains, going for a lot of hiking and biking tours in the Alps to get back in a condition to compete again. There are so many beautiful places, they should be able to refill the tank. It will be fo sure a good time, he never spend so long at home since he left for the draft so many years ago. Meeting all the old friends having good talks and all that together will bring back the power for what could be his last dance in the SHL. Hope it works out and we will see one more time the player he once was.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser has a number of off season passions but chief among them is jigsaw puzzles. This large Austrian can't get enough of the fun pass times. He has a full library full of puzzles. Difficult ones, easy ones, mid ones, trick ones, 3-d ones or all black ones you name it, he's done it. His everest this off season has been trying to complete a jigsaw of 100 stormtroopers in a jigsaw with no edge pieces.
His other passion lies in gaming. During this off season he has been plowing through warzone. With the increase in crossbow bolt velocity he has been thoroughly enjoying being a total pest across fortunes keep.
He tends to get at least 2 wins per night and feels like if he hadn't gone pro at hockey he could have turned himself into Austrias best warzone streamer. He's not a fan of caldera and is looking forward to warzone 2

I've certainly mentioned this before, but Alex really likes to cook. He particularly likes to recreate the dishes he cooked with his mother back when he lived in Russia, and his favorite thing to cook is beef stroganoff. However, this season he's going to try to diversify a bit and try cooking things out of his regular Russian comfort food realm. Being that he's in California and has been for quite awhile between the Anaheim Outlaws and the Pride, he's going to work on perfecting tacos. He's going to try to make chicken tacos, carnitas, steak, fish, all of them! He's going to try to get them as good as possible and then he's going to try to figure out his favorite taco. Maybe when he's done with that he'll move onto weird gourmet tacos, because that's probably a thing in San Francisco. Duck confit? Sure. Caviar? Maybe. Gold leaf? Probably not. That just seems wasteful. Anyway, hopefully he doesn't gain too much weight doing this but he'll be back in game shape in no time.

Edward Elric might be a young winger in the SMJHL on the Anchorage Armada, but during the offseason he is just a dude who is extremely interested in data science. He has always been interested in computers and how they work, and he is excited to learn more about data science so that he can help make the world a better place. Although difficult to explain, data science is basically an attempt to extract knowledge and insights from numbers. Whether it be stats on the SHL index, Jucc's amazing R graphs or Grum trying to figure out overs and unders for the SHL Casino, all of these are great examples of data science. Elric is a hard worker and is always willing to learn more, so he is sure that he will be a great addition to any projects/companies that might ever be in need of a data scientist during the offseason.

In past written point tasks, I have discussed a tad bit about Vaseline Podcalzone's passion for coffee (after all, there is plenty of great coffee places in Seattle, such as the legendary Starbucks breweries). You can probably imagine Podz in his fancy condo in downtown Seattle, brewing up a nice cup of coffee ahead of the morning skate. None of that instant coffee stuff either. The good stuff from fresh coffee beans.

Outside of brewing and drinking coffee, Podz is someone that I would not be surprised would dabble in other winter sports. He grew up in the colder regions of Russia, so I would not be surprised if he had an aptitude for skiing or snowboarding or both.

How about a more niche passion activity? Vaseline Podcalzone could totally rock a musical instrument. Kobe Bryant learned to play the piano. Braden Holtby brought along his guitar for road trips. Vaseline Podcalzone could totally learn some instrument, even if it's a super niche one like the bassoon!
