Bas O'Bigbers Allstar Game Watch

We're just about one third through the season and the Edmonton Blizzard are bad. Really bad. In fact there is only one team in the SHL worse in the standings than Edmonton and that is the winless Minnesota Monarchs. Despite that, there is a star in Edmonton, a star that all star game voters are going to need to pay attention to. He is Bas O'Bigbers. Now I know what you're thinking? Aren't all stars supposed to like make their teams better? How much better could Bas O'Bigbers be making Edmonton when Edmonton is second to last in the standings with only two wins? Well what if I were to tell you that Bas O'Bigbers is the difference between Edmonton being a fringe playoff team and going pointless in the 66 game era? That's the amount of value Bas is bringing to Edmonton.
One third into the season Bas O'Bigbers finds himself second in the league in goals scored with 16 goals. Only Jesper Aittokallio of Manhattan has more with 20 in 17. That's a pretty good number! It's been a great season for Jesper of course, however, Jesper is on a top 10 team with support. Bas O'Bigbers is on a bottom of the barrel team filled with youngsters and a few vets. Outside of Kyle Sutton and Julio Tokolosh Edmonton is razor thin right now, yet Bas has managed to achieve 16 goals in 17 games. I think this is quite impressive when you consider who the other top 5 goal scorers are and the teams they come from. 1st Jesper Aittokallio (MAN 10th) 20 Goals 2nd Bas O'Bigbers (EDM 19th) 16 Goals 3rd Anton Mihailov (BUF 3rd) 15 Goals 4th Ken Kevens (SFP 8th) 15 Goals 5th Devin Basher (HAM 11th) 15 Goals Only Devin Basher and Bas are in the bottom half of the standings. But Basher is only barely in the bottom half, meanwhile Bas' team is still several spots away from a playoff spot and is just barely living above the basement floor. Bas is scoring most of Edmonton's goals but like how does that rank against other players in the league who have to carry the load? So glad you asked, let's go to our graphic department for the answer to that question. Bas has a whopping 35.56% of Edmonton's goals right now. For context on how sensational that is, the player currently 2nd in the league in total percentage of team goals is Jesper of Manhattan with 26.67%. Nearly 10% less. Bas O'Bigbers has nearly lapped Devin Basher in this category and Devin was the other player in the bottom 10 of the standings. What Bas is doing is actually nothing short of incredible. Bas carrying a load which almost no other player in the league can even compare to right now. What Bas is doing is showing that it doesn't matter where he goes, he's going to be excellent. I'd like to give you some further context on this number. When we take a player's goals divided by their team's points we can see how good they are at scoring goals vs how good their team is. The idea is that the higher the number, the greater the isolated value of that player is in terms of goal scoring. A player might have lots of goals, but if their team has lots of points than the value can't be as easily isolated to them so they are hurt in such a chart. With that let's look at another graphic. That blue star is Bas O'Bigbers. With a whopping 3.2 Goals per Team points there is no one else with at least 10 goals in the league even comparable right now to what he's done. Bas is scoring nearly a goal per game when opposing defenses know he's basically one of the only threats. Bas is scoring when all the eyes are on him. And Bas is scoring knowing that if he doesn't maybe no one will. Yet Bas continues to deliver. Among other elite goal scorers Bas is carrying a load which they aren't. At the end of the season when you're looking at the elite goal scorers and deciding who should be in the All Star game, do not forget to consider that Bas is doing something special right now. Do not forget that his numbers don't exist in a vacuum. Bas is carrying the goal scoring effort for the Edmonton Blizzard on a near historic level right now. Do not forget.
