Scouting Report: Walter Sobchak, Left-Handed Goalie

Height: 6’4”
Weight: 210 lbs

Sobchak is a work in progress, a truly gifted goalie with a seriously glaring problem in his fundimentals. We’ll start with his positives, because there are many. His glove and blocker skills make scoring high on him almost impossible. He’s got incredible knowledge in positioning and he can control the rebound to neutralize a secondary chance. He can recover from any acrobatic save, and his reflexes and speed makes sure that no shot is truly out of his wheelhouse when push comes to shove. He’s also a gifted skater, and can make the quick play behind the net and recover when he strays a bit far from home. He’s mentally locked in when he needs to be, and he has the stamina to outlast a difficult schedule and help his team in key moments of the season.

But there’s a glaring red flag to his game, and it’s something he has to address as soon as he can. He’s easily beat due to his lack of reaction time and speed down low. He never seems comfortable in his pads. He can’t drop fast, can’t stretch the way he wants to, and his coverage of his five-hole is limited. He’s also susceptible to baiting out a poke to leave him out of position.

Sobchak has the most glaring fault of the goalie class, but it’s not too late to address the issue. I have confidence he’ll get games experience in the league.
