State of the Russian Federation: S70 Tournament
#1

Dear players, coaches, and fans of the Independent Russian Hockey Federation, it is my great honour to welcome the team that will be competing in the S70 IIHF tournament.

It is with heavy hearts that we must say goodbye to four members of last year's team. Johnny Tsunami played the last three tournaments with us, finishing with 2 goals and 7 points in 36 games, but it was the playoffs where he shined. He scored 2 big goals in S67 en route to the team winning a silver medal. Valentín Kalashnikov was only with us for two tournaments, but the hulking defender will be missed. And finally, the Petrov's. Teylora has been a staple on the blueline for decades, and their impact on the backend will be tough to fill. Unlike Evgeni, who we cannot replace in goal after a remarkable career with Russia that I dare say could be Hall of Fame worthy.

That leaves four big holes on the team, but we have found four worthy competitors for the new generation of Russian hockey. On defense, David Doug comes in after a tough season on a rebuilding St. Louis team, but still put up respectable numbers. We are excited to see what he can bring. New transfer Bellamy Blake will get a chance to improve his draft stock before he gets taken in the first round by a hungry SHL team. Two SHL veterans finally get their chance to play meaningful games for their federation, as goaltender Hugh Jass will back up Zhen Roza, while S55 defenseman turned forward Adrik Baranov will don the jersey for the first time in a few seasons for the last time, after announcing his retirement.

It's a rebuilding year for Russia, but the team is largely intact from their quarter-final appearance in last year's tournament. With some lucky goaltending, who knows how far this team will go?
