Hello and welcome to another season of amazing major junior hockey! With the first week in the books, let's dive into all the data. If you do not know me, let me introduce myself by telling you that I am a heavy data-driven person, and I love finding all the different ways to make data tell a story. Below, are some of the best stories the data has shown us after just one week of hockey.

The Two Best Teams Are At The Top, The Rest Is Wide Open

This may come as a surprise (if you do not have an understanding of numbers or rankings), but did you know that Anchorage and Vancouver are, like, really, really good? They are both sitting on 26 points in 18 games, and it's not hard to understand why. According to a super secret formulation calculation, both of these teams have 5-star offense and 5-star defense. They are the only teams with both offense and defense with 5-star ratings, and two of four teams with an offense or defense with a 5-star rating (Newfoundland having 5-star rated defense, and Carolina having a 5-star rated offense). Anchorage has 5 players in to top 50, and 11 players in the top 100. Vancouver has 3 players in the top 10, 5 in the top 20, 7 in the top 50, and 13 in the top 100. Both teams have a lot of star power, and a lot of depth. Who are all of these players in the rankings? Well, it'll be posted below at the end of the article!

Positional Positions

When it comes to the full teams, we know that Vancouver and Anchorage has the best teams, but what about based solely on positions? Well, let's start with the position that is front and center... center! (Please laugh at my puns)

For center, St. Louis has the best average center ranking, which is one of the weakest positions in the SHMJL right now, based on highest-ranked averages. Their centers average a rank of 60th, which is 8 better than 2nd-place Anchorage with an average of 68th.

As for the wings, Vancouver claims the top spot with an average ranking of 29th, way ahead of the next two, Vancouver and Colorado, with averages of 70th and 71st respectfully. A lot of that would have to do with them having not just the #1 ranked left winger, but the #1 ranked player overall. Right wing belongs to Carolina, with an average ranking of 31st, with Vancouver still showing their star talent coming in 2nd, with an average ranking of 60th.

When it comes to defense, only 3 teams have defensive cores ranked higher than 100th on average. They are Anchorage, Vancouver, and Newfoundland. On the left side, it is ranked as Anchorage (39th), Vancouver (59th), and Newfoundland (76th), and on the right side it is Vancouver (31st), Anchorage (80th), and Newfoundland (93rd).

Punching Above Their Weight Class

Just as there are teams that have the skill that are dominating, there are teams that are still dominating despite the skill gap. Nevada, for instance, is currently sitting in 3rd in the SHMJL standings with 22 points despite their 3-star ranked offense, and their 4-star ranked defense. Regina, currently 5th with 19 points, is credited with only 3-star ranked offense and defense to their name, but still pulling in points. The only team with a 1-star ranked defense, St. Louis, is currently riding their 4-star ranked offense to 7th in the standings, with 16 points. While having that star power on your team can never be a bad thing, there's plenty of teams that can compete just as well without it.

Talent Over Results

The front office of any hockey team should never let great talent pass them by, but games aren't won on talent alone. That talent needs to form a cohesive core that the entire team can be built around, and sometimes, it just doesn't always work as so. Take Grand Rapids, for instance. They have the highest ranked average of team talent, with an average rank of 80th, but when it comes to the power rankings, their average drops to 124th. That's a 44 position loss on average. They aren't the only teams that have that issue, as Colorado, Maine, and Nevada all have an average drop of 20 or more when comparing their talent rankings to their power rankings. All is not lost though, as the season is still young and those talented players can absolutely turn things around. If you need an example, look no further than Newfoundland. With an average talent rank of 130th (13th best), their average power ranking is 99th (3rd best).

The List

It's a super secret formula of stats + TPE (A.K.A. raw talent) to create a number that gets computed to create a power ranking.

Goals, assists, shots, hits, etc. all factor into the formula. Not just offensive stats, but defensive stats as well.

I'm number 1 in position rank and number 2 in power vs talent. Is that good?

So power ranking is the TPE + calc, so yes! Also, #2 in positional also means that you are the 2nd highest ranked in your position, which is also very good!
