Skin In The Game - The Measure of Skin & Its Effects on The SMJHL

As a follow up to my recent PT, I’ve decided to expand my research to the entirety of the SMJHL to see what teams were able to out perform their amount of skin. For those who are unaware, I used a formula to determine the amount of total and average skin for each team, and then divided the amount of goals scored by each team by their average skin to determine their Skin-Adjusted Goals Score. The higher a team’s SAGS, the better they would be, theoretically of course.
And when using the same formula to find the Skin-Adjusted Goals Against Score, a lower total is preferable. The formula used is the Mosteller Formula for calculating Body Surface Area (BSA) which is BSA = = 0.016667 × W^0.5 × H^0.5. There are certain factors to consider here: 1) The higher a teams Average Skin, the greater effect it will have on their SAGS. The higher the AS, the lower the SAGS. 2) The same goes for Goalie Average Skin. Although this has a more positive effect. This means that a team with a lower Average Skin on their skaters, should likely have a better SAGS. And this also means that the higher Goalie Average Skin would mean a much better SAGAS. The biggest shakeup is in the upper half of the league where 2 of the 6 teams are in the exact same spot as the Pre-Adjustment rankings. Conversely, the entire bottom 6 sits ranked exactly the same. The biggest victim of this stat is the Colorado Raptors, dropping from 1st in the league down to 6th. Finally, let’s take a look at Skin-Adjusted Goals Against Score. Kelowna Knights (127.49) 12. Colorado Raptors (130.85) 13. Vancouver Whalers (138.31) 14. St. Louis Scarecrows (171.22) As somewhat of a Raptor myself, it stings to see them drop so low. But I guess that’s what happens when your goalies are small and you give up lots of goals. Conversely, the top section is pretty much what you would expect. The biggest story here is Quebec once again, despite being smaller than average, they crush the SAGAS. This is a lot of data, so I hope you all enjoyed.
