Deep Dive #1- Nhamlet's Legacy in Newfoundland
#1

The SMJHL has seen a host of legendary GMs throughout its history, but I’m here to make the argument that Nhamlet is the greatest GM in the league’s history. A product of Newfoundland, Nhamlet was selected to take over the GM duties after JNH stepped down, and he created a dynasty in the FHM6 era.

S57 saw Ham bring in SuperTardis, Simo, Nike, New Toast, and Twix in an incredible draft class for NL. Tardis would go on to play for BUF, Simo for PHI, Nike for CHI (And is now their current GM), New Toast played a couple of seasons in MAN, and Twix had a lengthy career in CHI. Newfoundland would finish last in the SMJHL in Ham’s first season, but back in the old day every team made the playoffs, and as such they faced Maine in round 1. Now NL had beat Maine on their way to the cup in S55, but this S57 win would really kick off the legacy of NL beating Maine in the playoffs. We’ll see as we go through just how often NL beat Maine in the playoffs, and while NL would make it out of Round 1, they lost to Quebec City in Round 2.

S58 was a huge draft class, bringing in Rando, Speedwagon, Grim, Pasta, and myself. Rando would play for a bit in MIN, Speedwagon and Grim both played for MAN, Pasta would play for NL and CHI, and I would play for EDM, SFP, and CHI. NL would finish 3rd, beat Maine once again in Round 1, beat Nevada in round 2, but lose to defending champs Anchorage in round 3.

S59 saw one player added to NL, but hes a legend and possible Hall of Famer. Evil Allbran was taken in round 3, and has become a Philadelphia legend. NL finished 3rd for the second time in a row, beat Maine in round 2 (3 in a row for those counting), but lost to future champions Kelowna in round 3.

S60 didn’t add any new players to the team via the draft, but they did add my wife as a free agent, who at one point held the SMJHL points record. NL finished first in the league, and beat Maine (4 in a row), Vancouver, and Anchorage en route to the 4 star cup.

S61 was arguably Ham’s best draft, alongside S58. NL added Rashford (current WPG co GM), Tommy, Jeff, Sburbine (Current NL co-GM), Pope, Big Mack, and traded for Bauer. With all these huge new additions to the roster, NL would finish 3rd again, beat Anchorage in round 2, beat Quebec City in round 3, but lost to Vancouver in the 4 star finals.

S62 began the dynasty, with HFFO and his best friend Vic being added to the team. NL yet again finished 3rd, and beat Maine (5), Carolina, and Anchorage to win 4 star number 2 under Ham.

S63 saw NL draft Dangles, who was a huge add to the locker room. With a veteran roster, NL finished first, beat Detroit, Maine (6) and Great Falls for cup number 3.

S64 saw NL add Corey, finish first yet again, and beat Carolina, Colorado, and Quebec City to win 3 cups in a row, and 4 under Ham. After this cup Ham would step down.

Ham would wind up with 4 4 star cups, 6 playoff victories over Maine, and a very strong draft record, and should go down in history as the best GM the SMJHL has ever seen.
