SHL75: #10: Vlad McZehrl

Vlad McZerhl
@Chris-McZehrl

One of the rare players that had over a PPG over his career with over 500 games played. Even though VLAD did not have the longest of careers, his impact was found immediately in the SHL. With 694 points in 653 games played, 3 challenge cups to his name, lets see what makes him the first player to break into the top 10 in the top 75 of all time.

Originally drafted to Calgary, VLAD started off his career like most rookies in STHS. Which is not great. S26 was his first season, he scored 12 goals, had 9 assists for 21 points. S27 was about the same as well. 13 goals, 11 assists. But at least he won the cup in S27.

After winning the cup with Calgary, VLAD was setting his sights for more ice time, and requested a sign and trade. And with that, the Seattle Riot won that bid, getting McZehrl for a 2nd round pick. With McZehrl saying “thx Calgary and thx Esa. It was great to be in Calgary again. Now I am happy to go home to Seattle! my best time with Chris McZ”

S28 is where he had his first breakout season with the change of scenery. The first of many PPG seasons to come. Scoring 28 goals and 28 assists, McZehrl secured his first 1st All Star Team, and won the Richan for most improved play.Moving to Seattle really helped McZehrl find the next gear in his game.

S29 is where he got one of his first Ron Mexico nominations as well. Getting 23 goals and 32 assists, VLAD is starting to heat up in the SHL. Playing about 22.8 minutes the past 3 seasons.

Yet, VLAD is on the move again. Only lasting 2 seasons in Seattle. McZehrl the user was named the Co-GM of the Manhattan rage, so with that, VLAD McZherl is moving to Manhattan. The trading being, Seattle gets Tommy Creller, Gunnar Rask, Luka Zaitsev and a 1st. And Manhattan getting VLAD McZehrl, Harry Hans, and a 3rd.

S30 will see VLAD playing even more, which leads to higher point totals. S30 is the start of the double shifting era for STHS. And with that VLAD was playing about 28.8 minutes per game. He scored another career high 34 goals and had 35 assists for 69 points. That amazing season by McZehrl earned him another 1st All Star team, winning the McDonald and Karpotsov awards for most goals and points in that season. And getting another nomination for the Ron Mexico.

S31 VLAD had a 63 point season, another dominant one, but with many other stars during that season, he did not get any award nominations. But he did earn another 1st All Star team. S32 showed his next peak in what VLAD could showcase in the SHL. Scoring 31 goals, 39 assists for 70 points, VLAD won the Karpotsov award for most goals, got nominated for the Ron Mexico, and had a 22 point postseason for the Razov nomination. But Manhattan fell to the Dragons in 5 games.

S34 showed us  the best VLAD had to offer. Scoring 38 goals, 41 assists for a whopping 79 points, VLAD won his first Ron Mexico trophy of his career. The 79 points was the most points ever by a player in the modern STHS era(S14-S52). After 2 nominations, finally winning his first must have felt good. On Top of that, McZehrl led Manhattan all the way in the finals, winning his 2nd Challenge Cup. Winning the Anton Razov award, Jay McDonald Award, Sergei Karpotsov award, winning the Ron Mexico award, and getting the 2nd All Star team. This is one of the best seasons a player could ever have. His 38 goals and 79 points were new records, and they stood as the best scoring season ever in that STHS era, and was never broken until after the switch to FHM. Including playoffs that season, he was the first player to ever score 100+ points in a single campaign.
The last MVP level season McZerhl has had was in S37. The last couple of seasons saw McZehrl moving from Manhattan to Buffalo, and then finally to Winnipeg in S37. Searching for another dominant season, McZerhl found his final one. Scoring 30 goals, 33 assists for 63 points. McZehrl secured his final Challenge Cup of his career. Getting his 3rd Jay McDonald award for most goals, another 1st All Star team, and his 3rd Ron Mexico award.

After the S37 season, McZerhl had one final season, in S38. Going to New England, he scored only 39 points. And with that, McZehrl retired from the SHL.

Having 9/14 seasons being above a PPG in a season. x3 McDonald winner, x2 Karpotsov winner, and having a whopping x3 Ron Mexico nominations and 1 Ron Mexico winner. He is one of most decorated players the SHL world has seen. That is his legacy. In the era of double shifting, McZehrl was one of the kings of it. And he was rewarded.

As we get into the top 10, we are also going to be sharing where they got ranked on everyone’s ballots. For VLAD he had x5 Top 10(6-10) Tier votes, 1 tier 3(26-35) vote, and 3 tier 2(11-25) votes.
