Game 195 Falcons vs Mammoths

Another match up of the expansion team, Colorado, vs the struggling Detroit Falcons. This was the first game back since the deadline and it showed at times. They were certainly missing their defensive captain, Jasper Clayton and goal scoring winger Michael Burch.

The first period started out well for the Falcons as they were able to win the opening face-off and put a few pucks on net. They were able to draw the penalty as Sergie Volchenkov went to the box at 5:17 in the first for a minor hooking call. With Detroit playing mostly rookies on the power play, the inexperience showed as they struggled to get any real chances. As we hit mid way through the first, Detroit was playing their typical game of getting as many shots on net as possible. They certainly kept the Mammoths busy. The first goal came at 15:49 by Detroit’s Mathias Holmberg as he was able to get a quick shot off net following a draw in the Colorado zone. Detroit’s Matthias Holmberg was shown the way to the box for a roughing call at18:46. The Falcons were able to finish out the period without giving up the man-advantage goal.

Goals for this period are 0 for Colorado Mammoths vs 1 for Detroit Falcons.
Shots for this period are 5 for Colorado Mammoths vs 11 for Detroit Falcons.

With the power play carried over from the first, the Mammoths made quick work in converting to tie it up. Don Pellegrino was able to skate in untouched for a one on one look and buried it to make it 1-1. The goal must have ignited the Pellegrino as Tony Pellegrino was able to make it 3-1 by the end of the second with some creative play making by line mate Potato Chips. Detroit was showing signs of fatigue and inexperience against the top lines. The period ended with the Mammoths really toughing up on defense allowing just 5 shots that period as opposed to the previous 11 from the first.

Goals for this period are 3 for Colorado Mammoths vs 0 for Detroit Falcons.
Shots for this period are 5 for Colorado Mammoths vs 5 for Detroit Falcons.

Detroit came back in the third looking to overcome the deficit and bring home the “W”. They came out strong as Jason Joe was able to score off a given go from Ben Klinkhammer. Colorado came back quick to make it 4-2 from a greasy goal by BJ Subban of a face-off in the Detroit zone. With the game slipping away, Detroit showed their tenacity as rookie Tim Tebow made it a 1 goal game at 11:03. The game turned in to a battle as each team was looking to make a statement at the end of the season. Unfortunately for Detroit, Colorado would have the last laugh as they were able to find the net twice (Conway, Subban) more to make the final score 6-3.
Goals for this period are 3 for Colorado Mammoths vs 2 for Detroit Falcons.
Shots for this period are 13 for Colorado Mammoths vs 11 for Detroit Falcons

Game 196 Falcons vs :impact:

With all the teams sorted out post-deadline, this would be the first time that old team mates would be facing one another. The Falcons were looking to hold their high and keep it close while Montreal was looking for make a final statement on their season and show why they are the favorites to win the Championship.

Montreal took an early penalty 28 seconds into the game for a minor tripping by Chris Welch. The Detroit power play was clicking and cycling well. Matthias Holdmberg was able to score the first goal on the power play at 1:16 after a flurry of shots. Montreal answered right back 20 seconds later with a goal of their own of a one timer from Jack Reacher. The refs had to be on their game as the two teams got chippy as time went one. Each team would have a pair or power plays but were unable to take advantage. Time expired in the first with the score 1-1

Detroit continued to play tough as they kept the score even through most of the second period. The wall finally broke as newly acquired Michael Burch got his first point of the night at 14:48 into the second. He had a beautiful deke as he split the defense and scored in the upper corner off his back hand. Maverick Mitchell of Detroit was having a hard time keeping himself out of the penalty box as he was shown the door for the second time in the period. Alexander Wolff made quick work of the man advantage and took his team up 3-1 at 16:18. Before Detroit could recover, Michael WGerrad made it 4-1 at 16:30. Now visibly frustrated, the Falcons finished the period in a lack luster style only managing 4 shots the entire period.

With the final period starting the Falcons squad was trying to finish it out with some semblance of pride. They fired a handful of shots early on making Anderson work for his paycheck . Any hope of a Detroit comeback was shattered when recently traded Jasper Clayton scored two more unanswered goals. It looked as though Clayton found instant chemistry with his new line mates as they tore through the tired Falcons squad making them look absolutely silly. With just under 5 minutes to play the Falcons found the net for the second time tonight as Clive Stonehands got was able to deflect Dizzy Cleghorn’s shot and sneak behind the goalie. Time wound down and this one was all over. Final score 6-2
