How Important is the Second Pair?
#1
(This post was last modified: 04-26-2019, 12:14 PM by caltroit_red_flames.)

Brady McIntyre has spent his entire career on the 2nd pair. Because of that I have a personal interest in the impact of the 2nd pair for each team and how it relates to the impact of the first pair.

If you don't want to take the time to read this I can tell you my findings right now: there's not enough data from this season because not enough games have been played, but what I found is that there's not correlation whatsoever.

Now of course, a sample size of less than 10 games per team totally invalidates any findings in the first place, but I did think I'd at least find a small correlation, but really there isn't anything here.

1.) 14 Points - Edmonton - Brady McIntyre: 1750 - Connor Tanner: 1383 - Total TPE: 3133
2.) 12 Points - Manhattan - Tokek Takshak: 872 - Barret McCarthy: 806 - Total TPE: 1678
3.) 11 Points - New Orleans - Sean Stevenson Jr.: 831 - Clint Eastwood: 977 - Total TPE: 1808
3.) 11 Points - Chicago - Quick Mafs: 650 - Mikhail Petrikov: 614 - Total TPE: 1264
5.) 10 Points - Toronto - Zander Rhys: 1089 - Ben Turska: 451 - Total TPE: 1540
6.) 9 Points - San Francisco - Jack Tanner: 1629 - Fedor Shirobokov: 974 - Total TPE: 2603
6.) 9 Points - Calgary - Casey Creller: 927 - Brennan Kennedy Jr.: 563 - Total TPE: 1490
6.) 9 Points - New England - Perry Morgan: 548 - Guy Zheng: 568 - Total TPE: 1116
9.) 8 Points - Hamilton - Ben Dover: 1163 - Nour Harrak: 993 - Total TPE: 2156
9.) 8 Points - Texas - Chuck Crutchfield: 808 - Harvey Danger: 1018 - Total TPE: 1826
11.) 7 Points - West Kendall - Sven Brokstad: 858 - Karsten Kadinger: 1025 - Total TPE: 1883
11.) 7 Points - Tampa Bay - Blaine McElroy: 571 - Shoyu Kikkoman: 550 - Total TPE: 1121
13.) 6 Points - Buffalo - Charles Walker: 1294 - Tatu Makela: 1765 - Total TPE: 3059
13.) 6 Points - Los Angeles - James Johnson: 914 - Maurice Picard: 922 - Total TPE: 1836
13.) 6 Points - Minnesota - Ti-Guy Emond: 1126 - Sanyi Kocsis: 677 - Total TPE: 1803
16.) 3 Points - Winnipeg - Slip McScruff: 717 - Max Weber: 933 - Total TPE: 1650

Taking all of that data and putting it into a chart we get this

After looking at this I'm considering doing the same thing for the first pair, and then the top 4 to see if top the pair has a noticeable effect or if the top 4 as a whole is where we really start to see a trend. In any case, that'll probably have to wait until around the 40 game mark.

Interesting points:
Average 2nd pair defenseman TPE is 936.4. None of the players on the 2nd pair have twice as much as that, but Makela and McIntyre are pretty darn close. On the other hand we do see one player with less than half of 936 TPE, Ben Turska on Toronto. Looks like it's not effecting them very negatively considering they're 5th in the league.

I think you can pretty well split the groups of pairs into three tiers, with the top tier being Edmonton, San Francisco, Hamilton (though they're arguably in the middle tier), and Buffalo. That top tier of defensive pairs seems to be equally split into the different quartiles.

Is McIntyre doomed to the 2nd pair for the rest of his career? Find out next season I guess

It's a little deceiving on the chart. Top pair is Tor Tuck with 1805 and Ensio Kalju with 1285. I think our coach is trying to spread out the TPE.

BUF seems to be doing a similar thing with GOD McZehrl and Alexis Metzler both having around 1450 TPE right now on their top pair.

Same with SFP who have Charlie Schieck (about 1100) and Isak Odegard (about 1600) on the top pair.

Weber and I only had one game together as the second pair, but we got 2 points each in that game.  Watch for us to pop off Gojets

Is points really the best output to be expecting correlations to tpe, for defensman anyway.

I know it is a big hard to assess defensive players since it's not all about one thing... But maybe through some other defensive metrics against tpevand see if any match better.
