2x Draft Media, ready to be graded. 2,854 words.

Many have uncertain expectations regarding the performance of the Montreal Militia for the upcoming season. With some surprise picks and a deep draft Montreal has truly picked up some powerful players that will become a force to be reckoned with. As one of the players drafted by Montreal in the SMJHL S49 Draft, this will be an insiders perspective on the great team that has been built and the eleven players that have been drafted by the Montreal Militia General Manager, Fuzz. This examination will hope to look at the main descriptions of players, including their birthplace, height, weight, and other basic informative things, but will also include their style of play, their performance in the prospect showcase, and involvement in the locker room. Beyond that, some members of the organization have happily agreed to provide key insight to certain aspects of the team. Make no mistake, anyone with questions regarding Montreal’s performance this upcoming season will have them answered in full, with the Militia at the top of the league.

The Montreal Militia’s first pick came in the first round at number four overall, giving them the prestigious and highly sought after Bobby Lane. Born in Minnesota, Lane is an outlier, to say the least, as he plays right wing as a lefty player. Coming out strong as an offensive forward focusing on scoring, skating and puck handling, the 5’11” and 183 lbs. skater packs a heavy punch even with the expected weakness of checking. The build comes out clean with notable stats of 73 Scoring, a nice 69 Defense, a 68 Skating, and 63 rating for both Puck Handling and Passing. It’s no surprise that Bobby Lane went so quickly in the draft as the user, Rich, is the Bank Manager, S30, S31, and S39 Challenge Cup Champion, and has 3,852 posts since June of 2015. That comes out to about 960 posts a year, so clearly an active and useful player. This all pales in comparison to the fact that Bobby lane has a whopping $63.75 million next egg build up for his bank balance. If none of this has sold you on a well deserving 4th OA player, then frankly you might as well stop reading because I have no idea what appeals to you. GM Fuzz @FuzzSHL already wrote in his beautiful Behind The Scenes: Montreal piece about how Lane was their #1 guy from the beginning, and that should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone. Lane is an excellent pick, and will provide many positives to the team.

Montreal’s next pick came at 7th OA, and at this point I do need to toot my own horn a bit as it’s none other than myself, Joseph Weston. An American citizen from Chicago, Weston is a first generation player that came as a surprise to many at 7th overall. A lefty left wing, Weston weighs in at 202 lbs. with a 6’1” frame, and plays a sniper forward style for Montreal as of now. His current notable stats are a 71 Defense, 70 Scoring, 65 Skating, and 60 for Endurance, Puck Handling, and Passing. Checking may be a weakness, but Weston’s intentions are always to be at the right place at the right time, something that worked in interesting ways during the Prospect Showcase. While his original intention had been to score goals, Weston always maintained at least three more assists to his goal total throughout the games. However, the one thing on Weston’s mind is to constantly be improving. While many GMs approached Weston regarding his interests and goals as a player, Weston was constantly vigilant in getting build advice and tips from anyone and everyone, plugging his build and stats as often as possible. Even here in this article, where you can find them here, and here, in case anyone wants to give suggestions. All are welcome. The main monkey on Weston’s back that he wants to get rid of was that people were surprised to see him go so early. However, to anyone who reached out to the player, it should have come as no surprise that someone eager to help and constantly willing to improve was highly sought after by the Montreal GM. Weston himself had eyes on Detroit, Anchorage, and Montreal for the draft, and could not be happier with where he ended up.

The next player to be drafted for Montreal was the powerful Phineas Gold. Coming in at 13th OA, Phineas Gold is a knockout player who has a commanding presence both on and off the ice. Born in the United States and currently 5’11”, 190 lbs., the righty left winger is an energetic firecracker of a player. Gold has many notable stats with 71 Scoring and Puck Handling, 68 for Skating, and 64 for both Passing and Defense. These stats, while yes updated, helped the player plenty during the Prospect Showcase. Gold deserves just that for his performance in the Prospect Showcase. Gold was constantly at or near the top of the leaderboards for his amazing ability to score goals and be a positive influence on the ice. Despite a disappointingly close loss in the finals the Mustangs heavily relied on the powerful many points per game player found in Gold, something the Montreal Militia will be very thrilled to have for their own. Gold commands a presence not just on ice as mentioned earlier, but in his discussions on the forums and in the locker rooms. He is eager to jump into conversations and is always a welcome addition to any discussion, it should come as no surprise that the player is already building up a nice nest egg for his excellent work in writing media pieces. To anyone with free time, I would highly recommend taking a look at his Pre Prospect Showcase Interview with Phineas Gold, written by @Z0REM, as it only highlights the substantial player that is Gold. Just make sure you’re not drinking anything while reading the article, it might end up on your keyboard.

The Montreal Militia would then select in round two at 19th OA, Zbigniew Pokrywka. And yes, I triple checked the name. Pokrywka is a lefty defenseman from Poland, at an impressive 6’3” and 205 lbs. Playing a two-way style, Pokrywka’s strengths come in the form of an astounding 74 Defense, 67 Puck Handling, 64 Passing, 62 Discipline, 61 Checking, and 60 Skating. Pokrywka has many strengths, even turning his weakness of literal strength into a nonfactor thanks to his other areas of expertise. Pokrywka and his user thebigschnoz are experienced to say the least, with astonishing join date of January 2012. The man knows what he’s doing and many were thrilled to have the S27 Challenge Cup Champion back on the metaphorical field. Another pickup with an impressive balance of $12.5 million in the bank, Pokrywka’s article speaking on the draft and the competition is an excellent insight into the historic player. Pokrywka is experienced and a role model to young players across the world, a seemingly quiet yet confident player able to astound all he comes across. I look forward to sharing a team with Pokrywka, as I know there is much to learn from this accomplished veteran.

Next to be drafted by the Militia at 26th OA was Mitchell Maverick, a player I already know I love working with. The numbers do not show all that there is to the lefty goalie, but at 6’4” and 204 lbs. they are certainly not to be forgotten. Playing a hybrid style and born in the United States, Maverick has the many balanced strengths of Style Control, Reaction Time, and Hand Speed. While Rebound Control is a common weakness amongst the goalies of the SMJHL S49 draft, Maverick plays a truly varied style with many strengths working in tandem. The man is already great, he has an 80 Reaction Time and Hand Speed, 75 for his Skating and Size, with 70 for Agility and Style Control. Even his weakness comes out to 60 total so far, and will only increase from here. Off the ice, Maverick is a chill and a great addition to the locker room. Not just because I saw he is a man of culture loving rum and coke as well, but because no matter who’s talking or what ideas are being shared, Maverick listens to everyone and provides great insight of his own. From player builds, to jokes, to answering general questions in the chat, Maverick has a gif ready for any situation. Nine times out of ten it’s a Top Gun reference, of course. Maverick is a player to watch, not just for his flashy saves, but the way this guy is already a positive glue to bring the team together. The Militia are going to go far with this team, and it should come as no surprise that Maverick will be a huge part of that. This man can be my wingman anytime.

The Militia then quieted down before having to explode again with Tom Fiddler, drafted at 34 OA. A forgiving and understanding guy, something you should already know thanks to Fuzz’s Behind The Scenes: Montreal article. Fiddler hails from the United States and plays a two-way forward style, with no room to budge thanks to another big player of 6’2” and 210 lbs. This notable center’s strengths lie upon his Passing, Defense, and Puck Handling. While like many other players he has a weakness in Checking, lucky jersey #13 makes it work with a balanced high average rating across the board. His breakout stats are 70 for Puck Handling and 68 and a half for Defense, but from there he has 63 for Passing and Scoring, and 62 for Discipline and Skating. His lows are like any other, a boring and usual 40 Checking and 25 Fighting, but this guy is truly not someone to sleep on. Another great gif-er in the locker room, Fiddler instead provides hilarious responses with Dwight Schrute’s reactions to many things, and how we officially live in a society. When reaching out to the general chat for the Montreal Militia about quotes or stories to cover for the media, Fiddler provided the quote “Wheel Snipe and fuckin celly” unprovoked. Fiddler has a great and level head with all things and is always making time to help out his fellow Militia player. Fiddler always keeps his eyes on the prize while making a joke or two along the way, GM Fuzz was absolutely right in calling this guy a steal. Fiddler is going to constantly be improving and bringing his teammates with him to glory, and is a huge pickup for the Montreal Militia.

The next two picks came one after another but both deserve individual time in the spotlight. Picked up at 37th OA was the right-handed left-winger Ricky Bobby. A huge steal in my own opinion, this player from the United States is incredibly active and beyond focused on his game. Bobby’s stats may as well have been helped by Jesus himself, as he fits right in with Fiddler’s balance. An impressive 70 for Scoring and Defense is supported by a 62 Discipline and a rating of 60 for Skating, Strength, Endurance, Puck Handling, and Passing. Make absolutely zero mistakes about this, Bobby is not a jack of all trades master of none, Bobby is a player who can fulfill any role at any time. Put this guy on the ice and watch the success happen, whether it be his strengths of Scoring, Skating, and Defense, or his ability to make magic happen anywhere, Ricky Bobby is an active wheelhouse and foundational player. He is an incredible pickup for the Montreal Militia, as he has been constantly asking questions and willing to learn since day one. Bobby shows initiative in the locker room and is willing to listen to anyone for advice and answers. Bobby is a clearly dedicated man who knows how to reach success, his strong recent focus on earning money will help him go far in this league.

Coming up at 38th OA was another active player, Capp Hatter. Thanks to the Detroit, Kelowna, and Montreal trade, GM Fuzz was able to select this American-born two-way forward. Another impressive player of 6’2” and 225 lbs., Hatter plays a strong supportive game with his 76 Defense, 62 Passing, and ever improving 52 Puck Handling. He’s well disciplined at 65 and the rest of his stats are well balanced around 50, Hatter is another well rounded player who will be able to fulfill any role on the ice. While he may be on the quiet side off the ice, the man likes hats and is impressive in his well-thought-out decision making. Don’t be surprised if you see him making hat tricks look easy, this big brain and high-IQ player is able to help out wherever needed. A swell pickup for Montreal, I have no doubt that he will find a great place here and be a great addition to the team.

The Militia’s next pick would not arrive until 50th OA, in the form of Alexei Rykov. GM Fuzz had believed himself lucky, as each time he valued a player highly they managed to slip through the cracks to be immediately selected by Montreal. Rykov was no different. Another right handed left winger, this Russian player is another taller guy at 6’3” and 205 lbs. A sniper forward like myself, Rykov plays to his strengths of Scoring, Defense, and Skating, with 70, 70, and 65, at each respectively. From there he has a clean 60 for his Passing, Puck Handling, and Endurance stats. Rykov caught the Montreal Militia’s GM’s eye by being an active member of the rookie Discord server, and has been just as active in the Montreal Locker Room Discord. He is beyond a most welcome addition to the team, and has an impressive ability to crank out 10 pages easily if he feels the need. Another player that will help create a strong foundation, Rykov is willing to get advice on his build frequently and is welcoming to all members of the team. Just don’t play him in Counter-Strike, сука блять.

The second to last pick of the Militia came at 66, Ryan Daly. A United States born righty right-winger and offensive forward, Daly weighs in at 205 lbs. and a 5’11” stature. Daly’s stats are ones generally expected from a first time rookie, notable ones being a 75 Scoring, 65 Puck Handling, 60 Endurance, and 62 Discipline. The rest file into the 50’s range to create clear balance for easy improvement. Daly came as a surprise to the team as he was incredibly active in the draft stream, showing his natural affinity to be active in unexpected ways that are highly valued. The guy came in eager to make Montreal proud, and the team has high expectations from a fan of successful teams in various sports like Team Liquid. An eager and hyper player, Daly has a lot of energy that can create a great ceiling for himself to live up to. He knows he can do well, and I can’t wait to see him deliver on it.

Finally, came the last pick the Militia would make in the SMJHL S49 Draft. At 76th OA GM Fuzz was proud to take a chance on Antti Halonen, a defenseman from Finland. An offensive d-man with a 6’2” and 185 lbs. frame, Halonen’s strengths lie in his Defense of 70, a 65 for both Scoring and Endurance, and his stat of 60 for Puck Handling and Skating. A good build for a late draft pick, Halonen, like Daly, has great potential to become truly a sleeper OP player. A good starting build for his skater and a necessary slot of defense for Montreal can create a wondrous combo for the team, Antti Halonen’s future is truly in his hands.

And with that, those are all eleven picks made by the Montreal Militia in the SMJHL S49 Draft Class. Many should be carefully preparing to face the Militia this upcoming season, as their power players are constantly reaching for any opportunity to prove themselves and bring home the wins to Montreal. While some wrote them off and some thought this to be a rebuild, Montreal has created a draft class of amazing picks and herculean potential. The Montreal Militia are hungry for victory, and the key eleven pickups made by GM Fuzz are going to bring home as much as possible. Bet on it.
