The following is Otis B. Driftwood's interview of St. Louis' starting goaltender, Friedrich Schmidt

What, in your opinion, does it mean to be a St. Louis Scarecrow?
1. I would say that being a Scarecrow has more to do with outside the rink than on the ice. Some great players have come through St. Louis throughout their careers, but most of them have the same things in common. For starters, you need a wining mentality to really know that we're going to dominate the other team regardless of what others may say about us. St. Louis historically hasn't been able to close out playoff runs as we may have liked, but nobody can say we were out of the competition. The confidence to succeed and the camaraderie we build to achieve success is what defines playing for St. Louis.

Would you like to be an actual scarecrow? Probably get a lot of free corn.
2. That's a tough call, but Scarecrows have always freaked me out. You'd probably have to keep me away from a mirror

What do you think our chances are of winnng a Four Star Cup this season?
3. We are the team that's best positioned to win a Four Star Cup. From veterans like Dermot Lavelle and Logan Jensen to Brady McIntyre and Michael Fischer there's a tremendous amount of depth. What remains to be seen is if we can overcome teams like the Detroit Falcons and the Prince George Firebirds.

Favorite kind of music?[b]
4. I like a bit of everything, from metal to classical. If it's good, I'll listen to it.

For mine I asked St. Louis' captain caltroit_red_flames some questions.

1. You were drafted 4th overall to the Blizzards, did you see that ever happening?
It's pretty hard to put that into a small number of words. Coming into the SMJHL, you have no idea where you're going to go. You join the draft and start talking with people and earning your TPE and it's hard to separate yourself from the pack. Then you have people saying "Hey we're looking to take you pretty high, talk to us about these things so we can get to know you/" The whole process is very streamlined. Then you come to the SHL where you've had time to separate yourself from other players and you have a general idea of what the 1st round is going to look like. For a while I didn't have many people contacting me, but as picks were traded, more people starting messaging me. By the time draft day arrived it was pretty obvious who would be drafting me. So did I see all of that coming out of the gate when I first joined the league? No, not at all. Things were new and crazy and exciting. But did know which jersey I was going to be wearing on draft day when I was waiting patiently in crowd for my name to be called? Yeah, and I couldn't be happier with the team that chose me. What a stellar organization the Blizzard have. I'm happy to be a part of it.

2. You were recently announced as the captain of St. Louis, thoughts on that?
This was an incredible surprise. I honestly didn't think I deserved it at first. Guys like The Dude, Dermot Lavell and Logan Jensen are still around. But after the announcement my teammates were congratulating me saying "you deserve it man!" and that really made me feel like I could be a captain that would fill The Dude's skates. Svatoslav Bodnar and The Dude are the guys who really shaped me into a leader, so I have them to thank for this really. I'm looking to make them and the rest of the team proud.

3. Also recently you helped spear-headed the revival of the WJC as well as simming it. Did you learn anything during that process?
If I had two words to describe that, they would be "learning experience". Even with the help of three IIHF Commissioners so many things happened that were bumps in the road along the way to making this happen. Players were disgruntled by team names and the countries that were put together to form those teams. STHS was ruining our vision for a condensed roster. We figured out how to make it work, and the tournament ended in a great success, but this was a learning experience. I'm much more comfortable with creating schedules, picking GMs and simming with STHS. Beyond that though, I had an incredible amount of help from Dude and the IIHF Commissioners. They deserve as much thanks as I have received.

Your favourite Russian "Aleksandr Aleksandrov Jr" decided to seek the immense wisdom of Vijay Singh

Why do you like detroit?
they took me in when nobody wanted to pick me, and gave me a ton of support and playing time. I decided to repay that loyalty by doing my best to help manage them to as much as success as possible with the tools i had.

why do you think this is our year?
I think we retain a core of players that can lead us to a cup, but it has been diminished by trading the barlows. Regardless, I definitely do think we have a strong chance.

Who is your favourite russian goaltender in the smjhl whose first and last name starts with an a
I'd have to say Aben Awaters, thought that is a controversial decision.

wumaduce sowing the seeds of wisdom throughout the league:

1. What's one thing you wish you had known when starting out to pass down to myself and my fellow rookies?
You come in with high expectations. Temper them. It takes a long time to get good in this league, and if you expect to be a superstar out of the gate you're going to have a bad time. Stick with it. Get in there and get your training done, do your PT's and get all the TPE you can. Write some articles or create some graphics so you can get the money for training and gear. Ice time will come with more TPE. Just be patient.

2. Any particular advice for a fellow German Power Forward?
Hit people. Look, we aren't going to be the playmakers or the superstars. We're out there for a specific job. Get in, make the hit, and get the puck. Play the game hard, play the game clean, play the game the way you grew up playing the game. That's the most important thing I can tell you for being a power forward. When it comes time for the IIHF, just keep playing your game the way you play it. We're going to come up big next time, I think!

3. What's your favorite moment of your career so far?
My favorite moment is either when I got drafted by the Renegades after being inactive for my whole rookie season, or getting named Co-GM of the Renegades. There's a lot to do in this league, and playing the game is just the beginning.

4. If you could make one change to the league, what would it be?
I'd probably include Taco Bell in all contracts.

With Toivo great guy, thanks for the interview.

Having been a long standing co-gm of the wolfpack, what is the one piece of advice you'd give players up and coming in the league looking for a management position?

Players seeking management opportunities need to be sure they're applying for positions that make sense. Start off getting experience in GMing outside of the SMJHL and SHL, first. You could try GMing in IIHF, World Juniors, a GM only league like PHL, or other smaller leagues like GOMHL. When you just send in applications for every head GM spot that opens up, it doesn’t really give off a good image.

How would you define your player's career, in a nut shell?

Toivo Kosonen has done well. Last season he had 49 points in 50 games, and that was a good feeling. I have been waiting for Kosonen to break out. Kosonen was drafted 18th overall, and I think he’s a top-10 player of his draft class now.

What potential changes would you like to see in the IIHF?

I’m not sure how interested people are in the IIHF. One way to make it more important is have it less often. I know that it’s good off-season filler, but it doesn’t seem special. There are other things you can do in the off-season as well, such as fantasy GM series where you get placed on unique teams with new people.

“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. ... There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.”

Questions were asked to thatdamnwalrus, former Mammoths player, current Buffalo player.

1) What do/did you love about Colorado?

Walrus-I loved all the players I managed over the years, it was great getting all these rookies buy into the team and win a cup.

2) Why do YOU think we'll be successful this season?

Walrus-A ton of rookies with a ton of potential, it looks like a young group who stay active.

3) What did you think of the Mammoths draft?

Walrus-Couldn't have asked for a better draft!

As you can see, a many of many words...

Thanks to Drunken Teddy for taking the time to answer some questions~ <3

1) What got you into the SHL?
2)How did you end up on the Whalers?
3) Do you aspire to gm in the SHL as well?

1. I actually found the site a couple years ago but forgot about it, then a post on /r/Canucks reminded me, so I signed up
2. I got drafted by the Whalers 1st overall in S34.
3. Maybe eventually, but right now I really want to focus on making the Whalers great and pushing for a cup.

Asking Chris Thorburn AKA FlappyGiraffe some questions!

How does it feel to be a Mammoth, vs any other teams you may have been on, how does it compare?

Being a Mammoth is just the best. First of all, the mammoth is just a bad ass creature - they are large, furry, and have tusks! Furthermore, we have tons of great guys on the team here in Colorado and we all seem to gel pretty well with eachother - I believe this is a big part of our early season success. As for playing for any other teams, I have only played with Colorado so far in my career. However I recently joined the Winnipeg Jets locker room after the SHL draft - the team has a different kind of vibe to it when compared to the mammoths, but I can't say enough good things about the people in the room.

Ok then, #2 a multi part question, What are some of the negatives of this league that worry you, and on the flip side, what are some of the positives, and how do you weigh each of them up to come to an overall positive/negative expirience of the league?
I bring the tough questions sometimes

I think a bit of a negative I've found playing in the SMJHL is just the sheer length of the off-season. I feels like it's been ages since the last one ended. However, I will admit that this could be because we never made it to the playoffs last year, so the offseason did begin a few weeks earlier. A big positive for the league however are both the SHL and SMJHL entry drafts. Those by far have been my favourite moments on the site, including the lead up to them where you can avidly watch your draft stock plumment or soar, and are very exciting times. I'm also a big fan of how friendly everyone is on the team, and has a good time. I don't think I would enjoy my time on the site as much as I have if I was surrounded by negative people!

All in all, I'd say that my one negative that I listed is overpowered by the enjoyment I've gotten out of the drafts and camaraderie I've had with people on the team!

Ok, good! Now, what are your thoughts on the Mammoth's off season moves, and how do you think you will do in the SMJHL. Is there a potential call up in your immediate future this season, and if so how do you think the Mammoths will persevere if such a thing does occur?

This offseason the Mammoths did not make a ton of offseason moves, aside from a huge draft that will do wonders for the team this year and beyond (thanks in part to a huge trade deadline move acquiring all of PGF's draft picks). This season, I think I will look kind of mediocre on the stat sheet aside from hits and shot blocks, however I will be expected to play big minutes against top lines night in and night out - which will hopefully contribute to lots of wins! I can't see myself being called up to the Jets this season as they are probably the deepest team in the league, and I am low on the depth chart. However by some chance it did happen, I believe we have lots of rookie defensemen who could step up and replace my minutes admirably!

Ok I know we only need 3, but I'm going to ask one more just to be safe...

sounds good

What is your favorite movie (If not a Hockey movie, also include one) Why is it Slap-Shot? and Why is my Ancestor Mr. Tuttle your favorite Character? :D

Well, I'd have to say my favourite hockey movie would be "GOON: Last of the Enforcers". I saw it on the plane during my trip to Halifax, and I was mildly entertained. Unfortunately I have never seen "Slap-Shot", however even without watching it I know Mr. Tuttle is the best character. This is because his name is really fun to say, and after checking out a picture of him he looks pretty badass!
