Tanner I think it'd be fairly easy to adjust things. I'm gonna continually harp on the fact that GMs should not be making league wide decisions and holding league jobs. I don't care who it is or how respected and revered they are, for the hundredth time it's the principal of it and setting that standard- taking away the possibility of a conflict of interest. It blows my mind that putting people in positions of conflict just goes without any opposition.

D.C.? Can't be a GM. For obvious reasons.

Commish? Again. It's blatantly obvious.

Awards? Haha yeah right.

GM should not be allowed to hold ANY job besides GM. Plain and simple. The only decisions they should be making that doesn't involve their team is when to have the draft date.

Take away the possibility of the problem and there won't be a problem.
Hey! Fuck you for having good points and making me agree with you. Yeahthat

We already have minimum salary tiers based on TPE level in the rulebook. The problem is maximum contract length.

If you limit contracts to 4 years max, we would have more players bumped into higher salary minimum contract levels. Instead we have sophomores with no TPE signing 10 year contracts for $1m and they'll never become free agents.

Shorter contracts means a better salary cap and more activity in the off-season.

Well yeah I know we have them but they aren't very realistic or effective, even disregarding those long-term contracts. Although ideally I'd like to see the salary tiers redone (they also should automatically update at the start of each season to reflect a player's TPE), that would be a bit of a difficult process and probably would, initially, create a further divide between teams who have been exploiting the rules and teams who have not. So I think the cap really needs to be gradually reduced over a period of a few seasons, perhaps combined with an increase in media payout to counteract the decreases in salaries.

All you have to do is encourage free agency. When a player explores free agency they always get better offers. Play with this friend, more ice time, Captaincy, more money....whatever it is it's probably better than their current team is offering and it's almost always always more money.

So the more free agents, the higher the average salary per player. Salary cap doesn't need to be lowered. The unrealistic contracts need to fade away and players need to realize teams will pay $20m+ like Simons just got or PLL or Clitsome....the money is out there. Players aren't asking for it and more importantly players aren't going to free agency to get it because of extended contracts.

Your rookie contract should be1-2 years not 3.
Your sophmore contract should be 1-3 max of 4.

That means that player will eventually have a chance at being a free agent. That's activity, that's parity, that's higher salaries....that's keeping the player interested by offering them something new and exciting.

I think it would be easiest to just adjust contracts on the fly if players hit a new TPE-tier. Each off-season we check is that's the case and then bump a players contract up from $1M to $2M for example. I would like that better than maximum contract lengths, especially if they are as short as 4 years.

Also, add one or two new contract tiers to adjust for TPE-inflation.

And lastly, get rid of the hometown-discount. It waters down the whole minimum contract idea way too much.

Not saying a player has to go to free agency or that they can't re-sign. Look the typical career for an NHLer is drafted at 18 and retire in late 30s so roughly 20 years. We have regression at ten. NHL caps contracts at 8 years, 4 is reasonable for us.

In 4 years of they like everything, they re-sign but now they've entered a new TPE tier and have a new minimum value.

And yes the hometown discount was always a disaster and should be removed.

If this stuff happens (especially the recruitment and the PT system) I will certainly be back here.

I think you can do that in your settings.

I don't have time to go through all 7 pages right now, but I want to briefly echo what I said in my klosecast last week: the update scale makes the league not fun. I've been here nearly 30 seasons and have never get this disinterested in the league. Two weeks of updating to bump something from 90 to 91 is tedious at best.

I'm not suggesting a change to the scale, but it's not fun to try to be even slightly casual, because the scale is so harsh. I think that's why we lose a lot of people.

I'm expressing my boredom with the league due to the scale, no horse included.
