S82 SMJHL PT #0: New Places Due: Sunday, April 20th @ 11:59 PM PST

The draft was very exciting for Helmfried Kunkel but at the same time nerve wracking. Helmfried who's lived in Germany his whole life now learned that he had to move to Carolina with his new team. Carolina isn't the first city Helmfried thought of where he'd end up in the USA, but he's excited about this new opportunity. He couldn't really tell where he'd end up but he just hoped that he was drafted early. Carolina came knocking in the second round and he couldn't have asked for a better place to land. Helmfried had some great conversations with a few of Carolina's leadership and players before the draft. This made his transition into the team a lot easier. Once he landed in Carolina and arrived at the team's facility, he saw many familiar names and faces who all warmly embraced and welcomed him onto the team. His locker room had a couple of welcome signs and new merchandise from the staff and he instantly knew that he had found a new home.

After getting drafted by the Maine Timber, Zachary Guérard felt excited and a little overwhelmed. Moving to a new city was a big step, but he didn’t have to do it alone. Mike Liut, the Timber’s GM, personally picked him up from the airport and helped him get settled into an apartment near the arena. He even showed Zach around the city and gave him advice on how to adjust to pro life.
The next day, Zach visited the rink for the first time. Walking into the locker room and seeing his name and number 7 hanging above his stall made it all feel real. A few teammates stopped by to welcome him. Nothing too flashy, just some handshakes, quick jokes, and warm greetings that made him feel like part of the group already.
Later, he met the other new draftees. They all grabbed lunch together and shared their first impressions. It wasn’t a big event, but it meant a lot. Zach could already feel the bond starting to build. This was the beginning of something special.

Finish showed up to Ottawa excited to hurt people help the Highlanders succeed over the next few seasons in the SMJHL. With his measly salary, the best place he could afford is a tiny studio apartment that barely fits his massive frame laying in bed. But there's been plenty of joys thus far. Immediately upon arrival, Dydney Frosby's welcoming presence helped him to feel at home with his new team. The first time Finish arrived in the locker room, he hit his head on the door on the way in. The next day he showed up early and carved a space in the door frame so that his giant head and body could fit through the door without having to duck. Upon finding his locker, Finish immediately attached a wooden board to the inside of the locker. Part of his pregame ritual is pinning a picture of the opposing team's captain to the board and glaring at it before stabbing it with his hunting knife.

Now that Finish has properly settled into his new team in Ottawa and gotten familiar with his teammates in preseason games, he's looking forward to helping his team win by hurting as many opponents as possible.

Well, Bob wasn't exactly "drafted". Much like their great grandmother, they ended up joining the league just after the draft, putting them at a massive disadvantage to the other prospects. Sure, there's less training time, less time getting to know teammates, but it also means less time to really understand the area that you're going to be living in. Bob spent much of their life going in between the big city in Chicago and what is effectively a large suburb, Providence. But living in what is truly a small town in the middle of nowhere is going to be a first for them. Great Falls is a part of a massive national park in Montana and while many others would say that the scenery around them is beautiful and calming, Bob isn't acclimating well. They've already tried every single taco place in the area and haven't found a single one worth going back to for quesadillas. This is going to be a long stay in the minors if they can't find any.

Greed is a player who holds himself in high regard and thought he would go late in the 1st or early-mid in the 2nd round, so it was a little bit of a shocker and an awakening when he saw himself go 45th overall in the SMJHL Draft to the Newfoundland Berserkers. Obviously a drop was to be expected considering he had demands to various teams in which he wanted to play with his fellow homunculi, Pride and Wrath, but something like this was something he hadn't even considered happening.

Settling into Newfoundland, former Berserker player Jason Bourne (now playing for the Chicago Syndicate at the SHL level) was someone that really helped him get settled into things. Other than that, hanging out with his fellow homunculi and fellow rookies Ace Faulkner II and Belac Fromm has been a blast for the young winger as they look to be the future of the Berserkers after the team has sort of entered a rebuilding/retooling phase.

Agent Tesla: Alright this is our biggest hurdle thus far Lorenzo.

Lord Marshall Lorenzo Alstott: Bigger than bringing me across numerous realities into this one? Really?

Agent Tesla: Well that is the equivalent of a flick of the wrist. This requires actual thought and response from you making it far more difficult by comparison.

Lord Marshall Lorenzo Alstott: Couldn't you just read my mind to get all the answers you need?

Agent Tesla: That would be a violation of your privacy!

Lord Marshall Lorenzo Alstott: Even if I consent to it?

Agent Tesla: Less so in that instance, but you have to understand an entity such as myself has very few lines that they are unwilling to cross. Removing one of those lines is not something I am comfortable with in any circumstance as those lines are there for a reason.

Lord Marshall Lorenzo Alstott: Fair enough then. Let's just get into it then.

Agent Tesla: How are you faring in your new city and has anyone helped you get adjusted?

Lord Marshall Lorenzo Alstott: I would say I am adapting quite well despite the differences to my homeland. Thankfully everyone has been rather accepting of my eccentricities and my agent has provided a considerable number of assistants to make sure that things go swimmingly.

Agent Tesla: Excellent! Glad to hear it. Now what was your first trip to the locker room like?

Lord Marshall Lorenzo Alstott: Calmer than I expected. Given the sport I expected it to be a lot more raucous, but it was a lot quieter than that. It was nice because it gave me time to sort of settle in before having to jump to it if that makes sense.

Agent Tesla: Nice nice. So you have settled in well now then is what you would say?

Lord Marshall Lorenzo Alstott: Absolutely. I need to get a bit more experience with my teammates I would say, but that will come with time. No issues have presented themselves so far so I have hope that we will be able to form an effective unit.

Agent Tesla: Well there you have it folks! Thank you Lorenzo for joining me for this task and I will see you possibly next week for another.

Lord Marshall Lorenzo Alstott: Until then I'll be getting more used to the ice.

The draft is always a nerve-racking yet exciting experience for all young hockey players. Bob Bergen Jr. at least had the knowledge and experience handed down from his father who experienced the draft from both sides of the stage. Jr's biggest worry of the night was having to move long distance, luckily that didn't end up being the case with Quebec city being one of the closer teams to Toronto where Bergen currently calls home.
Following the draft Jr. didn't join the team for a few days, instead flying back to the UK for a long weekend making the most of what will likely be the last of his freedom for a while. When he did finally join the team at the practice rink, it was quite a culture shock for young bergen, just finding the right locker room took almost an hour due to all the signs being in french and his extremely limited knowledge of the language abandoning him (admittedly his knowledge is pretty much limited to the necessary swears...)

Henri Allard Morin (ham) was drafted by the Colorado raptors. He was really happy to get drafted by them, since his godfather Shoyo Hinata (a pretty good shl player( played for them in the J. So he was familiar with the city. Shoyo helped him get settled. The GM Jumbo was really welcoming, HAM really loved his enthousiast for playing a big piece of meat at center. Henri is living with Gabe until he get in appartement. He is living in his fridge, in the deli section. The two of them are friends! Allard Morin really liked the colorado raptors arena, it was way bigger than the one in Trois-Rivières. The team organised a big welcome party, but it ended on a bad note. The cantering service were serving ham sandwiches and it was a little insensitive. HAM took out his frustration by doing a lots of high slapshot at the next practice. Everything is good now

Cap Crunch of the Thunder Bay walleye of the Dimulation Major Junior Hockey Lrague really didn’t have any clue of where he was going to go, so when his name was called early on in the draft, the first thing he had to do, admittedly, was figure out where the hell Thunder Bay was. After a quick Google search, he at least knew that it was in Ontario. Step one was complete. As for actually moving and settling in, Cap Crunch has so far had a very easy time of it, as he is, after all, a literal walking bag of money. As a result, he has no issues with finding a place to stay, a very nice place at that, nor with finding things to do, as money is never an issue for a walking bag of money. I expect that he will end up settling in very well as a walleye rookie and making the all-rookie team because he’ll pay off the committee

Valter was drafted by the Nevada Battleborn. He had heard of Nevada strictly because of Las Vegas. Though too young to gamble, he was really excited about getting to see the display that Vegas put on. When he landed, he was promptly greeted by Claude, as they were the player to do the initial scouting report. I guess they felt they has grown some rapport during those times. Initially, I was hoping to go straight to the rink. Get a feel of where I'd be playing, and what the facilities had to offer. Though instead we were taken out to dinner first. I didn't mind as the flight food is lack luster to say the least. After eating at a local mom and pop shop, I was shown where I'd be staying for the duration of my time with the Battleborn. After a change of clothes and some freshening up, I was brought to the rink. My true home away from home

Brain Fluid Explosion was definitely disappointed after getting drafted in like the one millionth round (he fell asleep after the third), but he was excited to get to know his new teammates! Luckily, there were only 2 of them to meet. Nameless and slm. Brain Fluid felt like he knew slm from a different timeline, one where they lived in a town, a town of salem, perhaps, but that's neither here nor there. When he arrived in San Diego for the first time, the first thing he did was take in the sights. (Probably. I've never been to San Diego. Speaking of which, what actually is in San Diego? I actually can't name a single thing. Maybe I'll look that up later.) After arriving at the facility, the first thing Brain Fluid did was sit down with his GMs to outline his goals for that season, and how the GMs could help him achieve that vision. The GMs outlined how they wanted to use Explosion in turn. Overall, it was a solid meeting. The season starts tomorrow, so hopefully Brain Fluid can show the world what they're made of!

Let me start by saying that Alphonse Alakazam was not to shaken up after he was drafted by the Quebec City Citadelles as he gets to play for his hometown team and he did not even have to move or rent a new apartment, which was unexpected, but very much welcomed. As a failed magician, Alphonse tried to impress his new teammates with magic tricks, but Alphonse failed at every turn, drawing the laughter of his teammates. Alphonse then went back home after a good day of practice and he met his archrival magician on the street, who had heard about Alphonse's difficulties and was ready to make fun of him but Alphonse threatened to start a fight and he drove him away. Now that Alakazam has a contract with the Citadelles he can hope to move to a nicer apartment, as the one he has is underwhelming to say the least. There is not much money in the magician scene in Quebec, so all money is welcomed and will make a difference for Alphonse.

But Mashop nuh lose faith. Him know seh fi him shot deadly, fi him patois sharper dan skate blade, an’ one day, di hockey world ago notice.

While drafted yutes dem a sign contract an’ pose fi photo, Mashop De Devilwok. No team send nobody fi help him, no veteran mentor, no relocation consultant. Just him cousin, Biggsy, weh drive Zamboni part-time an’ swear seh him coulda be agent if him “did bother.” Biggsy help Mashop scrape plane ticket money fi fly go tryout wid SMJHL team.

First time Mashop walk inna pro lockerroom, him confuse. Everybaddy stare. One man ask if him “lost” or “lookin’ fi di cricket pitch.” But when Mashop start wire puck top cheddar in practice, dem stop laugh.

Not yet being drafted, all I can do is prep and plan for when I do, which hopefully will be soon! I would try and find a nice place to stay that fits my needs but doesn't break the bank. Hopefully near some form of transportation to make it to and from practice times. I'd love to find a veteran who would be willing to guide me, in my case it would likely be the starting goal tender. If I want a chance to get on the ice I'd do well to follow their advice as best I can. I'm sure it will be surreal to see the locker room for the first time knowing I'm taking my first steps into being the player I want to be. Knowing I'll be the new guy on the team, I'll have to accept whatever comes my way and take it with grace. I only wish to succeed in my endeavors so making enemies is not what I want to do. Hopefully this prep work will make the transition as smooth as possible.
