A huge BHN network congratulations to your S55 SMJHL Western Conference Champions the Kelowna nights!!  What's that you say?  There are four teams remaining in the playoffs?  The Knights didn't even win their division in the regular season?  How could they possibly be the conference champs?  Well I've got three words for you my critical thinking friend!

Franchise Hockey Manager
That's right! The absurd seeding brought to you in FHM's 12 team playoff format means that the last remaining team from the West is the Knights!  Let's take a moment and go round by round to see exactly how we got here.

In the first round our division winners from each conference got a bye while everyone else battled it out.  Yes, even the last place Battleborn.  Those matchups and their results were as follows:

Knights v. Battleborn The noble Knights bested the ferocious Battleborn won in a 4-0 series sweep.
Falcons v. Timber Here we had another easy sweep with the Timber going full Whomping Willow and knocking the Falcons out of the sky.
Scarecrows v. Whalers I'm just gonna cut to the chase, this one was another sweep and Vancouver took home the bacon.
Outlaws v. Citadelles WHAAAAAT?!?!?!?!? Who saw this one coming? I certainly didn't!  Quebec City managed to win a playoff series in their very first season besting the Outlaws in 6 games for the opportunity to take on the Berserkers in the second round.

Looking at these matchups we should have known the carnage to come.  The first 2 matchups make a ton of sense, 2 teams from the same conference going at it no biggie.  However, what the hell is STL doing matched up agains VAN?  Or ANA against QCC? In a civilized sim engine these matchups wouldn't have been possible until the Four Star Finals!!

Coming out of round 1 even with the wonky matchups we still had 4 teams each from the East and the West remaining and you know what? Maybe it was just a quirk of the 12-team matchup.  JK ABSOLUTELY NOT THE MATCHUPS WERE STILL FUCKED!  Here's how round 2 played out

Berserkers v. Citadelles The Berserkers won this matchup handily in 4 games and allowed an astounding 1 goal the entire series.
Kraken v. Whalers After sweeping the Scarecrows you'd think Vancouver would have a little pep in their step against a rested Kraken team, but it wasn't to be.  The Whalers lost this one in a series sweep putting together only 7 goals to the Kraken's 20.
Knights v. Raptors In a tightly contested series that saw both teams locked at 2 games apiece after the first 4 the Knights decided they'd had enough and won in a thrilling game 6.
Timber v. Armada We had our first game 7 of these playoffs!  After staving off elimination and winning game 6 in OT the Timber dominated the Armada in game 7 to advance.

Round 2 matchup-wise was a lot like round 1 where 2 of the 4 series featured teams from the same conference and the other ones featuring thousands of miles of travel between games.  However, looking at the series results the hockey gods didn't let things play out so cleanly to preserve the conference balance.  Of our 4 teams from the Western Conference only the Knights won their series and advanced to the semifinals.  Which brings us back to the whole reason we're here!!

The format is absurd lmao, I only realized just how dumb it was when I started making a playoff bracket PT and noticed the format made it impossible. I can see it being problematic in the early days of both leagues but I guess we'll get used to it.

Congrats Kelowna (maybe)! Knights

To be fair,

Detroit was western conference champs in S45 and S37.
Anaheim was eastern conference champs in S48.
Kelowna was eastern conference champ in S42.

This isn't new for the site.
