Deep Dive #1 - How to Train Your Raptor, Colorado GM Edition

If you were to just take a look at the Colorado's GM history, you'd probably expect it to be not very notable. However, today I'll examine how far back this renowned lineage of GMs has spanned.

@hhh81 starts of the modern Raptors drafting future GMs tree. His tenure spanned S48-S53, and saw the transition of SHL eras from STHS to FHM6. Trips' GM tenure includes one finals appearance in S50, which they lost to Carolina to, but in S52, he selects LordBirdman.

@LordBirdman would play his career as Sven Svenson on the Raptors and assume the GM position in S57. Under Birdman Colorado had 4 winning seasons, but his teams couldn't overcome the second round. All of Colorado's playoff runs ended there. He'd end up drafting future GM Ruggsy in S57.

@Jumbo was drafted by the Raptors in S54, and after a successful J career, succeeded Birdman as GM in S60. And here we begin a tenure of dominance, where Jumbo and the Raptors record 8 consecutive winning seasons, with 3 over .700 pts % . He saw some modest playoff with three semifinals appearances. His ability to maintain a winning team, in spite of the cyclical nature of that J franchises go through should be commended. Great work Jumbo. He would end up drafting the two future GMs, first Jaybait in S60, and then NYR73 in S67.

@Ruggsy would take on the reins after Jumbo's outstanding tenure. He'd end up only GMing for 3 seasons, but took Colorado into its first losing one in a long time. He quickly managed to turn it around by Season 3, but Colorado had an unceremonious first round exit despite a 2nd place league finish.

@Jayba1t is next in line and woooo boy did this guy stink. 2 seasons, with a .387 WINNING PERCENTAGE. Guy won less games in 2 seasons than Jumbo and Ruggsy did in 1. What a bum. Now in all fairness, he appears to be the first Raptor GM to execute a full-blown tirefire tear it down rebuild in a long time, so these were some expected pains. Funny enough he didn't miss the playoffs in his tenure and even managed to eek out a series win. He'd end up finding 2 future GMs in one draft, with Takk and Fishy in S73.

@NYR73 's GM tenure saw Colorado FINALLY, after 8 IRL YEARS (2016) break their elusive championship drought that lasted a mind-boggling 49 seasons. Enough said there already. Alright to expand on Jaybait's rebuild, NYR oversaw a first rocky season, but quickly righted the ship with a Raptors golden era with teams pts % exceeding .600. Hey maybe the rebuild paid off. Am I the goat? Anyways this isn't about me, so well, well done NYR. Absolute bangerrrr

@Takk806 took over after NYR for 3 seasons, and continued to build on the Raptors contention window. After 6 seasons that included a Raptors cup win, he oversaw a transition era where the Raptors slowed down a bit, but not as bad as the Jaybait dark days. He'd take Colorado into one finals appearance, where they lost to Quebec.

@ThisSeemsFishy is the current Colorado GM, whose management career is still young, but it looks like the plan will be to carry forward Takk's retool. Time will tell if Fishy can bring Colorado to greatness.

To conclude, Colorado's GM lineage has been spanned almost 40 seasons, and has featured 8 GMs since then. Cool thing to note, every co-GM who served under each GM would become the next GM when their current GM stepped down, if that makes sense. Cool stuff. Also Jumbo is on his second run as co-GM, having worked with Birdman and now Fishy.

Hopefully this storied tradition can continue to be passed down for seasons to come Raptors

One of my favorite things about Colorado's history. A testament to the culture we’ve built over the years
