With the engine changes we are seeing a bump in scoring for forwards but the same cannot be said for the defensemen of the SHL. Up until recently almost all of the top 10 positions were held by players that spent all or most of theirs careers playing until the SimonT sim system. However in recent seasons we are starting to see a few new ones break through. Lets have a look at the defensemen who ended their careers with 700 or more points.
Arguably the all time goat of the SHL. Amassing an incredbile 973 points, a total that will likely never be overtaken, Alonso Garbanzo is far and away the highest scoring d man of all time. Across a career spanning 23 seasons, played entirely on Minnesota when they were originally the Chiefs, Garbanzo had three seasons above a point per game with a further twelve seasons over the 40 point mark in the 50 game era.
Second on the list and well behind is another golden oldie. Darian Scherbluk scored 753 points in 21 seasons. Unlike Garbanzo Scherbluk plied his trade on more than one team with stints on Hamilton, Manhattan and two separate tenures on Toronto. He has sat second on the list for almost 40 seasons but that position may be in jeopardy.
Ludwig Koch-Schroeder had a twenty season career that resulted in a final tally of 741 points. He started his career with two short spells on Hamilton and Buffalo before moving to West Kendall where he became the dominant force on the blue line of a dynasty team. Winning three cups in the process he retired at third on the list.
The only active player in the top five. San-Sam Emerson has spent his entire career on the Philadelphia Forge. In just under 18 seasons he has 725 points putting him within striking distance of second place on the list. His 210 goals puts him behind only Puddles O'Duck so in all likelyhood he finishes his career top in goals as well. A future hall of famer in the making.
Recently retired Puddles O'duck rounds out the top five. The best goal scoring D man in league history with the previously stated 216 goal tallies he also chalked up just under 500 assists to end his career with 714 points. Another on the list to be a one team man and for sure an all time Atlanta legend.
Rex Kirkby is a journeyman compared to the rest of the people on the list. In 21 seasons he played for West Kendall, New England, New Orleans, Atlanta, Buffalo and Philadelphia. In that time he scored 713 points putting him only just behind O'Duck on the list.
The last defenseman to score over 700 points is Ben Dover. A comparatively short career with "only" 17 seasons spent entirely on the Hamilton Steelhawks Ben Dover scored exactely 700 points with a good number coming as goals with 207. The only defenseman inside the top 15 with less than 1000 games played who knows where he could have ended up with a longer career.
